A pretty solid Metroidvania with good gameplay, pixel art, and multiple endings. Play as a Duke Alcedor, a knight returning to his homeland after a crusade, only to find his home infested with unholy magic, monsters, and demons. Smash your way through hordes of demons and the undead, working your way to five castle-style dungeons to defeat the creatures living inside in order to open up a church to fight the demon leading it all. Gameplay is standard side-scrolling 2D action platforming, but solidly done. Killing enemies drops coin for you to spend on weapon / armour upgrades, spells, potions, additional potion bottles, and hearts that act as additional lives. Red potions can be grabbed for free from any innkeeper, but mana potions will cost you, elixirs needing to be bought from a specialty shop in the mountains. Experience you get can be put towards your weapon power or an additional health / mana slot. Shrines act as save points and upgrade stations, refilling your health, mana, and lives when touched. Skills can be found as you explore castle dungeons, giving you the ability to smash down into the ground, launch yourself upwards into the air, or charge yourself up to leap horizontally across the screen. These play a big part in navigating your way around the map to access new areas. Spells will also open up new areas to you, bringing a hidden dungeon to light and being used to hit far away switches you can't normally reach. A day / night cycle exists, changing up the monsters that appear outside of cities, also effecting the operation of one of the towns you come across as creatures flood into town. Bosses are really where it is at when it comes to enemy design, looking pretty gruesome and monstrous, especially when you defeat them, coming apart in a pile of gore. Morality is a bit of a hidden mechanic going on, where your decisions and side quest completion will end up affecting if you get a good or bad ending, or even a good + or bad + kind of ending. Infernax is also a two-player game; the second player playing as the squire, Cervul, alongside the Duke. I haven't tested out the multiplayer myself, so I can't really comment on it. Overall, I really had a good time with Infernax, being far better than I was expecting it to be. I grabbed this one at 50% off and it was a bit of a steal at that price. Easily recommended if you can get it on sale.
Castlevania 2, con esteroides.
Crazy game, had tons of fun with it. Did the normal good, ultimate evil and a few funny endings. There's still so much more to this game. First time I played on normal, it's punishing but not evil. After that I played casual so I could power through to get the other endings. The game itself isn't so long, it feels just right. Controls are crisps, music is really great. A hard recommend.
If you loved OR hated Castlevania 2 and Zelda 2... this is your game! It does everything right. Without dumbing it down, it is a lot of fun and a decent difficulty. If you're good at Nintendo, this will be an absolute breeze, but you'll enjoy it the whole time! It's nostalgia, but with something new! Don't forget to summon the tornado and break the walls for food!
The game is broken... When I die it tells me I'll return to the last shrine keep my gold and XP. Instead, it returns to me to the last shrine I manually saved in (different than just interacting or passing the shrine) and sets my XP and gold to the same amount I had when I saved at the last shrine? First time it happened I thought it was an error with the game, but it happened again second time I died. How is something like this borked and no one is mentioning it in the reviews is beyond me. Shame too, because I was really enjoying the game. Controls were tight, combat satisfying, and pixel art was detailed and on point. Liked the story so far as well.
An absolute retro game, for better and for worse. It’s a shame we can’t live in the 1980s forever. So don’t add so many outdated designs that only frustrate players and waste their time.
Great game if you have fond memories of Simon's Quest on the NES.
Трайхардеры, играющие на классической сложности в жизни тоже получают ваншот от воды.
