This is an Early Access Report. It therefore only comments on the game's state during the time the report was made and whether or not it is enjoyable/who it will appeal to. This EAR will be revised upon the game's full release.
You’re Jim Grayson and you’ve just stumbled upon one of the strangest cases you’ve ever had. Will this case take the cake as the one that keeps you up at night? UI There is almost no UI. This is as immersive as it gets. The only indication you have on your screen is the small red dot reticle that changes from red to gray on items as you’re able to click on. I like this as it leaves more of the world wide open to explore without the cluster of UIs. Gameplay/Controls You arrive on scene with little to go by and you search. You look at things that might be out of place or that you think might be of use to a detective. I’ve watched enough ID that I went right for items that contained DNA or looked in places where people try to get rid of evidence. With this being in EA, the only bugs I came across were the ones already listed in the bug menu. This bug menu, in case you come across one during your playthrough, opens in a separate window when you hit Start or ESC. I used both a XBox 360 controller and a keyboard/mouse. Both work fantastically well and are both equally responsive. Clicking on things will merit a response from Jim, letting you know whether or not what you’ve picked up or poked at is related to the case or the scene or not. Jim will comment on the object/case if you pick up the right object or give an unimpressed/negative response if you handled the wrong one. I think I should mention here that your environment also plays a vital role in your investigation. Pay very close attention to your surroundings! I have to say, this was pulled off flawlessly in the 3rd and final arc of this case.
There was a point where you finally watch the security tape and you have to venture out into the corn fields. At first, I figured it would be daunting to look for one body in a huge field, but I backed up and went back to the station. This is when I heard the birds and I looked up. Birds tend to circle dead or decaying things. Lo and behold, I followed the birds and wouldn’t you know, beneath them as they circled the sky was the body I was looking for. This was pretty stellar I gotta say.
Visuals The game keeps with a primarily monochromatic scale with various points of interest or accents appearing in color. Neat enough, the object you’re to find for your case changes to full color objects. This is a visual cue that let’s you know you’ve found the correct objects. Objects unrelated to the case will turn gray/black. Very nice visual and audio cues. Perfect for a game of this type and style. Music Listed as being by Pedro from YouTube, the music is what you would expect from a detective/noir-esque point-and-click. It does well to make the game feel eerie and not to know what to expect next. Incredibly atmospheric. Overall As it stands, the 3 mission previews took me a little over an hour or so to complete. But there is promise of more content to come and bug fixes as well. If you don't feel like paying the current price for a little over an hour of content, I would wait until more of the story is fleshed out and more cases/episodes become available. I highly recommend getting into this as Silhouette is a great example of how a detective noir point-and-click should be. It’s definitely atmospheric, the music is somber as you continue to investigate, and the case itself really ups the creep factor to 11 as you find out more about the victim and his demise. I’m definitely going to keep an eye on this as I feel this will be a very promising title.
If this review/EAR helped you, please give it a thumbs-up. Potential. The art style & character aesthetic are solid. The sound, both ambient & music. The story seems like it could prove interesting. I'm recommending this because I'm a sucker for art & style & noir; I'm not at this stage recommending it for content length or gameplay quality. Here's why. The gameplay is not there... The first mission, you need to find x number of clues & all the objects are white, when you pick up irrelevant ones they turn black, relevant ones reveal what they are & the game doesn't provide direction and so you click on everything until you find (I think it was 6 items) & then you go to the next level, this was not compelling. The second mission, was a long cutscene with some dialogue prompts for jokes where you listen to the Coroner talk about the evidence you collected & the body that was discovered; a lot more could have been done here besides wise cracking. It doesn't need to be something like Law & Order: Legacies but at the very least I could have had more dialogue prompts or none at all, the half-measures of this section was confusing. The third mission (and the last for this Early Access release) was the best of the bunch & I think maybe shows the Developers realising that the first mission lacks guidance. This level has some of the points-of-investigation highlighted in colour, but the most crucial (I guess it is a puzzle trigger) & the object you need to find are still white, but there are environmental clues as to where to look for the object & then environmental clues as to where to proceed. This mission & the guidance given went a long way to addressing my gripes with the first part of the game. I'd say 25 of the 40'ish minutes of my first playthrough was spent click on every object in the first area & convincing myself that I must have missed some clue as to directional guidance in the games audio because the dialogue triggers play over one another; so $5 may be high for sub-45 minutes. I like where this is going though, with minor fixes like audio overlap & player guidance it could turn out pretty good.
Its a very nice little game, the early access is fairly short, but it leaves you with wanting more of the story. Where is this going? You play as a detective trying to solve a case of murders. Check out some gameplay here. https://youtu.be/WamqXbpJfXY
Very impressed with this game so far. It has a beautiful aesthetic that looks really great. At first it's a bit strange to see that there aren't any textures in the game, but then you notice the subtle details in the models or the lighting and the spot use of color and after a while it really grows on you. Love the Farm Country level, it's gorgeous and fun to explore. Really wasn't expecting the kind of gore at the farm crime scene and this is when I realized that the visual aesthetic helps to make it feel more like a cartoon which means it's easier to stomach. The gameplay is pretty much exactly what it says on the store page - it's a point and click adventure game in first person. At first I was worried that it would get boring, but I think the developer has found the right balance between exploration, clue finding and story so It doesn't feel like a walking simulator. Really interested to see where this goes. Sure, it's a bit short but if it actually gets up to 6 hours long when it's finished then I think it'll be worthwhile. Especially knowing that you get all the future updates for free. Absolutely recommend this game and excited for the next update!
This game was given to me by a friend that knows I like offbeat games and ones that allow me to explore and find things. While I know that this in early access I do see that there is the start of something here. But what it really becomes remains to be seen. Stylistically the game is interesting in its use of lack of textures and only using gray scale with just a small bit of colour here and there. The voice acting on the other hand is something that I am not fond of (the voice acting of the Detective I mean, just to be clearer on that fact), but it is still a good solid first effort from a one man operation. One thing that I could say that could be improved would be to have a few more of the clues in the first mission (or case I guess) could be a little more obvious in their placement. Beyond that I will be watching this one, just to see where it goes.
Silhouette is like a fusion of the movie Seven with a 70's detective novel. The grim, noir look with splashs of color and humor make for a great entry into the story, The game is in first person with an interactive main character who will comment on every object and person you interact with, Full of hidden surprises and shocking victims of a serial murderer, you will have to find the clues to solve the mystery. I loved the atmosphere and grim first case, the music was perfect for the setting. Another great thing was the amount of objects you can interact with, rotate them and zoom in or out as you like. The only thing I would like changed is if you could throw objects farther, other than that excellent start and I can't wait for more!
I played the first mission. I opened every drawer and cupboard. I found lots of objects that had nothing to do to the case. THEN A BIG BREAK HAPPENED> I found some pills in the toilet, but nothing happened when I picked them up. Who flushes pills? idk the case will never be solved. Also there's no textures at all in this game and nobody has any pupils. It's creepy as ♥♥♥♥ and now my kid sister Fregorgregori has terrible nightmares and is pissing herself worse than that VR dude. Overall an updsetting experience. :(
It's kinda disappointing since there are so many glitches and breaks of voice. Not to mention how there is no sense of crime scene preservation. But the graphics are pretty awesome... Hope it gets programmed better Maybe then it wouldn't be so frustrating Not to mention the detective is pretty much stating the obvious and I'm going I know that and you oughta tell me more about this but you won't ToT
Really like the noir look of the game, and the way the coloured lighting (neon signs, police lights) looks in the black & white environments. Not sure how I feel about how the characters look (grey skin and white eyes.) I'm a fan of old school point & click, not many of these get made anymore. Definitely interested in seeing where the story goes.
This is a quick early access review. I like the art style, and there aren't too many first person detective/adventure games out, so this is a nice change of pace. Without giving away any spoilers, a few of the puzzles were a little obscure, but taking a break and coming back to the puzzle later I was able to solve them. The game has potential! I can't wait to see what new cases the developer adds more to the game, and adds requested features like inverse mouse controls and more options for different resolutions :) Recommended at this price, and also to further help the dev to continue to update the game with more content.
