Do I recommend the game? Yes I do, but with a few caveats. If you want something of semblance to a story, start the cannon of Vengeance which requires you to take the girls hand when you start a new game. Be warned even with the retelling of the story it might feel forced and truncated. Compared to the original release thought, it is like changing a Prius to a Ferrari. Cannon of Vengeance has two endings Law and Chaos (with a passable story) and the original campaign has 3 endings plus one secret, but a mediocre story. (The original + Vengeance are included) Unlike other tittles this is their fist foray to open world. This comes with beautiful vistas and somewhat of an aftermath of a dying world. There are quests, notable points for pickups and no random encounters. What it lacks is the content to make it interesting, the quests are silly stories, with meager to good rewards, vast swaths of exploration with a lot nothing but enemies and pickups. Aided thankfully by “magatsu rails” that once activated makes the traversal more tolerable and check points that work as warp points/camp sites. Now for the layman terms of the review: Yes the game is good, could it have been better? Absolutely it could have there is a lot of potential here just needs more polish hopefully this was a learning experience for the development team. Also the combat is great, preparation is king , thus doing research for sections of the game ahead is A MUST, specially if wanting to avoid grinding and frustrating end game bosses (looking at you Living Abyss,its easy, if prepared accordingly). {Also yes, this is pokemon for grownups}
My favorite non-portable SMT game. Wish they'd give this series some more love instead of Persona.
I came here from Demikids and had no idea SMT was so horny.
atlus could puke and i would drink it

Best Smt game I’ve ever played (haven’t played the 4th yet) great gameplay and story.
I played this game five years ago on the Switch when it first came out. This re-release is such a big upgrade for many reasons, chiefly among them having the option to play the game at 120 FPS instead of 25. If you haven't played any SMT game before, this is a good start. The best thing about these games is how customizable everything is. You have absolute control over every aspect of your party of mythological creatures. Fusing old monsters into new ones is such a great system and leads you to constantly change out your party to better fight against rougher foes. The Press-Turn battle system is largely unchanged from other SMT games since 3, but this system is great so I am totally fine with no changes. Exploration is the big new emphasis in this game, and I like the attempt. Actually being able to see enemies roaming ruined Tokyo is a big step up from random encounters, I also liked searching the levels and trying to find loot. Some people might not like awkward 3D platforming in their RPG, but I liked the change of pace. I would also like this greatly expanded on in the future. The biggest fumble in this game is the story and general presentation, which are downgrades from the other games in mainline SMT. This is especially disappointing after 4, which I thought had a really great story and atmosphere. 5 has a really interesting concept but doesn't really do anything with it until the game is nearly over. This is a game first and foremost, and the gameplay here is engaging and fun the entire runthrough, even if you skip cutscenes. VVengeance is great and worth your time if you enjoy JRPGs.
BEST ATLUS GAME OF ALL TIME
