About

Blending elements both old and new, Shadowed: the Demon Castle of Ooe is a unique medieval Japanese take on the tradition of games like Angband and Nethack. The basics of Shadowed are simple, but the resource management, build decisions, and brutal status effects are not. With unique enemies and costly abilities, Shadowed aims to provide a tactical experience, rather than one based purely on game knowledge.
Exiled from the Japanese imperial city, your character is on a one-way trip to "scout" a demonic castle. The legendary demon Shuten-Doji surely must have died centuries ago, and yet somehow, the Ooe mountain once again runs red with blood. Go forth to the castle, and wash clean your dishonor with death. No matter your prowess, a lowborn warrior such as you could never actually hope to prevail... Or so the imperial court thinks.

Shadowed: the Demon Castle of Ooe features:
Long-term decision making: Everything you do ticks up your fatigue, which you can only wash away after defeating bosses on certain levels. Every character has access to unique and powerful weapon techniques and class spells, but use them too liberally, and you may not last.
Interesting levels: With over 4 groundbreaking level generation algorithms, unique roguelite-style events with choices, and special features like optional one-way teleports and center vaults, exploration in Shadowed is always varied and rewarding. Stairs are placed in roughly the opposite side of where you spawn, so you always have a rough idea of where to go, or what to avoid if you wish to explore everything with minimal backtracking.
Deadly enemies: Large emphasis has been placed on giving enemies unique abilities, strengths, weaknesses, and counterplay. Prepare resistances for some, debilitate others with statuses, avoid melee combat or ranged fights... Almost every enemy in Shadowed is a special creature based on Japanese myth, and many have devastating tricks up their sleeves.
Builds and upgrades: Shadowed has a unique stat system with five stats(Strength, Agility, Precision, Spirit, and Cunning) that all have some usefulness for every class. With over 240 perks, many synergies are possible with things like stealth kills, weapon techniques, status effects, class mechanics, summons and much more.
Symmetrical status effects: Shadowed has five elements and many impactful statuses, ranging from poison to immolation to berserk to charm. Both the player and enemies can be affected by all of them, enemies often have crippling elemental weaknesses, and many can be permanently charmed to the player's side and controlled as allies.
Stealth gameplay: Sneaking past enemies can give more EXP than defeating them, but you won't get their loot. Stealth has many features like stealth stats, sound investigation, vision cones, sneak attacks, predictable movement patterns; and you can always see which direction an enemy is facing, as well as where they will face next.
No gotchas: RNG is always a factor in roguelikes, but in Shadowed, you may examine an enemy to see what it is capable of, any time you like. You always know exactly how far away bosses/rests are, and the level exits are always placed in a consistent pattern.
Preparation systems: Shadowed has an item preparation system that lets you prepare items to use instantly, but punishes you for using them from the bag. Scout well, be prepared for most situations in general, or run the risk of fumbling for what you need most.
Strong class fantasy: Ninjas can sneak attack, hide, use weapon poisons, shuriken, kunai, bombs, special ninpo spells, and more. The Ronin is a juggernaut capable of unleashing huge attacks as he builds up his ki through fighting. The Onmyoji prepares spells to be used between levels, relying on knowledge, divination, and elemental fury to survive. Shadowed exists to be a more flavorful and in-depth exploration of oriental classes, rather than them being a tacked-on afterthought.
Immersion: Sound, music, graphics, and event descriptions all come together to create a very immersive experience for those with a little imagination.
Note: "Ooe" is pronounced "Oh-eh". Shadowed is available in both English and (coming soon)Japanese.

Ultimately, I will say that Shadowed does a wonderful job being a traditional roguelike with stealth elements. A quick summary of pros and cons Pros - A balance of stealth and combat that doesn't overshadow each other - Classes have diverse playstyles - Classes play very different from each other, the only two classes that really have overlap is shinobi and iga, and even then they're pretty different - Information being cleanly displayed, you won't need a wiki for this game comparing to other roguelikes - Fast combat (in terms of turn count) and tactical combat that doesn't feel cheap when you die. If it feels cheap, that's because you didn't read what the enemies do - Diverse enemies with diverse strengths and weaknesses - May not be relevant when you're reading this review, but while this game had support, the dev has listened greatly to community feedback Neutral - Classes aren't balanced comparing to other classes, a class might excel at the same while another might fail - Fatigue system. You have to be careful on how you explore levels and how you use your stronger attacks, because everything, that isn't sitting still doing nothing, makes you tired. - Thresholds. Perks require you to have certain a certain amount of a stat, and the perks are more impactful then the stats. So this typically makes you focus on getting stats to a certain threshold to get perks, and also strength for carry weight. Cons - Each class mostly focuses on one playstyle, diversity exists in the classes but the other playstyles are typically noticeably weaker - It's a trad roguelike, if you aren't aware of what a trad roguelike is, this is your warning - Requires reading, certain enemies have 100% armor, 200% dodge, inflict you with a status that makes you unable to attack them - Game was made by a solo dev, he tried his best but there are bugs/glitches/oversights you'll have to expect from a game made by a solo dev I want to say this review by saying I wanted to give it a positive review the moment I got past the 3rd level, but I wanted to beat the game so ensure the entire game was overall good, to ensure that it's fun all the way through. It did take me a while, but ultimately I was playing a lot with different classes more so then focusing on winning. I should say, for players who play stealth games for a "ghost" playstyle, you can't sneak past every enemy in the game. You have to kill bosses and the final boss requires your build to be good at combat. But for normal stealth enjoyers who sneak around and kill enemies when needed and try to salvage a situation when you get caught, this is perfect.
This game has a great setting. Fans of permadeath should try it, especially those who want to explore something other than a generic dungeon.
I want to like this more than I actually DO like it. Ill start with pros then go to cons. in short though, Quality of Life is way too low IMO. Pros : unique classes, classes tell you what you can expect out of it, as well as a generic difficulty of using them. Build diversity: in addition to the classes being cool you start in a shop, You select what items you want to buy to start you run, letting you have an initial spec to start with which is VERY cool IMO. Finally, lots of skills which made me think I could sink a lot of time into it and have a huge amount of game learning to do which I like in rougelikes. That unfortunately, is all the pros I have. Onto the Cons. 1. Too hard to do anything. And I mean this in the literal sense. Took me 2 hours to figure out how to do a ranged basic attack with the Kurasagami (chain sycle ninja wep). Even up to 3 hours Id say 'how do I use this item, better jump into KEY BINDINGS to figure out how! 2. No right clicking items. Modern games will let you select an item right click to say 'prepair', or 'use'. Not here. No, you need to use 'p' to prepair items to set them to your hotbar. which is differnt from reading scrolls which requires you to USE them, which is different from keys to then USE a ranged attack from a prepaired item. Q is for techniques which is different from magic. In short over the first 3 hours i had to stop every 8 minutes to look at key bindings again. For the record ~ is the key for a normal ranged attack with an equiped melee wep. 3. no tutorial. 4. Too slow paced. It was level 1, a regular enemy and I was the generic easy class who can do everything. I spent 3 turns locked with the enemy and NEITHER of us doing damage to each other because of dodge / block / whatever. Combat that stalls this long on generic enemies is a con to me. Spoiler, he also took many hits to kill. 5. I kept trying to use the Kurasagami as it seemed like a cool wep, it has a basic 2 ranged attack (even if it required a special key i had to search for 10 minutes to find) Except many enemies can move 2 spaces and still hit you... sooooo functionally useless. in the beginning 6. I dont feel like I have enough information upfront. I tried the mage, and you can get talismins at the start but I had no idea how usefull they actually were before using them, leading to test runs where your just figuring out which skills you actually want to start with. In short, I tried to like it more than I actually liked it. The keys are confusing and dont make sense (another example you start with a levelup. What button do you use to open Character panel? C? I? NOPE its Crtl + C.) The interfaces are very bare-bones and needs more accessability such as click drag, or right clicks. I would also like damage previews as I had no idea if the enemy had armor or what my hit chance was. This stuff might not be as bad if it wasnt complex, obtuse, confusing, hiden information, AND HARD. I died on level 1 & 2 a couple times which really doesnt help me learn much.
fun so far! fantastic vibes, great aesthetic, minimal but very readable. honestly i love everything about it ... except the controls. keyboard is fine but mouse support is straight busted. targeting ranged attacks with the mouse flat out doesn't work and mousing over inventory items to read description works maybe 30% of the time. would love another pass on mouse controls (or maybe full controller support, even)
cool, good
An example of a more classic style of roguelike with an emphasis on stealth I haven't personally seen before. It's challenging (as I expect from the genre), but I feel like there's a lot to learn and many ways to handle anything I encounter. It's always nice to see my favorite genre with new ideas and I've always been a sucker for ninjas.
Somebody cooked here
