The Good: Quick runs, minimal grinding, no fluff Lots of cool items/abilities Easy to do alright, Hard to do well
I've played many traditional roguelikes, and was thinking this game was fairly easy. Then I found the key and started getting my ass kicked.
The Bad: Limited content: relatively few areas with area patterns that become familiar fairly quickly Awkwardly required camera controls: Overhead camera does not see all of the revealed area. Either play in isometric or swap between the two. No zoom function. Some mutations are more annoying than anything (lots of things in the format of: 1% of turns: do bad thing) The Verdict: 8/10: This game grew on me, finding
the key behind the cabin, even if I haven't managed to bring it back
changed my opinion on the game heavily. In the 'one-direction roguelike' sub-genre, Deadland 4000 is very comparable to One Way Heroics, and the only thing holding me back from recommending Deadland over OWH is OWH's stupidly low price tag ($1 for the base game, $2 for the DLC). [Game received for free on a giveaway on r/roguelikes]
I like Deadland 4000. I recorded some of my progress. Please take a look if you like a more Audio / Visual Experience. https://youtu.be/KyUyYNZBLO8
A Procedural, Post-Apocalyptic Future!
Deadland 4000 is an Indie, Isometric, Turn-Based Roguelike about the Post-Apocalyptic Future! Enter into the distant world of Deadland 4000, packing Pixel Graphics and Procedural Generation of the seamless lvls, random weather patterns, like acid rain and solar flares, and mutant monsters everywhere, so sneak and slaughter your way through the future, to fuel both your hungry belly, and your hopes of escape. Permadeath is also present, adding real weight to player choices and chosen actions, and there is a day and night cycle, adding to both the intensity, and the optional sneakiness, as view distance is reduced for both you and your mutant prey.
LVl Up From Loot, Not Kills!
In Deadland 4000, you don’t gain exp from kills. When you drop a monster, you get what the monster was carrying, or, in the case of edible monsters, what they are made of! YUM! Instead, you LVL up when you score a skill book off a monster, take the time to read it, and choose from 1 of the 3 random options. Plus, you Gain Permanent Power from consuming certain items, like gummy vitamins that permanently boost your hp; cool!
EMBRACE CHAOS!
Collect enough rads from your food and foes, and you too can be granted the Mark of Greatness! Accept the Mark of Mutation, and gain great powers, like: Random Teleportation! Gain the Power of Photosynthesis! Or of Treeform! Make like a tree, and leaf! Become a Ratman thing, who can sense and sniff out food! Or a freaky frogman who can swim and doesn’t mind acid rain, but drys out in the sun! And More! But BEWARE! One could also be “blessed” with some not so great powers, like a Stomach Worm that steals some of your food, or a Malformed Heart, which costs you HP, or become Narcoleptic! You win some, you lose some. Though remember; the Arc of CHAOS bends towards Absolute Randomness! Consider it a test of your WORTHNESS to the Ruinous Powers of the Post Apocalypse! Some good, some bad, but all in all, they lead to Very Exciting Situations!
Exciting Loot & Items!
There are many strong and interesting items to find that open up options for the player beyond static stat boosts, granting tools to help keep the player alive in interesting ways, like: A ring that teleports you to the closest tree A wand that blasts forth bubbles of lava A cigar that turning you into a tree, (and make makes monster leave), fun A flaregun that roasts an area Mushroom that make you invisible Interesting and powerful items like that enhance your mobility and survivability in the face of unfavorable odds.
A New Perspective!
The ability to pan the camera is awesome; you can play it as a typical top down roguelike, or side profile, or like an isometric roguelike, or something in between! Very cool! And I really like how angling the camera can let you see further, almost like you are seeing from the perspective of the character. Excellent, as a major limitation of typical top down cameras, especially fixed cameras, is the loss of view distance. This limitation can be seen most clearly in Diablo like ARPGs, with ranged characters most clearly impacted by the massively reduced view distance, and thus, their ranged engagement distance. Good job dev side stepping this issue by giving the player the choice of perspective; awesome! Anyway, Deadland 4000 is offering Turn Based, intense, Survival RPG, Post Apocalyptic fun! So, will you survive the world of Deadland 4000 with me? Watch?
Simple yet fun survival coffee-break roguelike in which the horizontal area of the game is limited and you move up to progress, making each run quick and not exhausting. A surprising amount of items and mutations provide great replay value.
A challenging and fun turn based roguelike, with interesting and impactful items. Contrary to many other games, you can use almost everything you find in the right situation. While the count of items is not huge, they are well thought out and bring enough variety to keep it fresh, so quality over quantity. You will after a while encounter the same enemy's, area's and item's quite often, but using what you get in the right way and managing your resources makes for a good challenge. The developer obviously cares about their game, and it's community, so if you write in the forums there is a good chance, that they will read it and try to fix any possible bugs one might encounter. If you try to accomplish everything there is, you can spend a lot of time in mastering the game and completing it, so the game can offer a lot more playtime than what I am having right now, which is very good for the price tag. If you like to put on external music while playing, I'd recommend Darksynth, since in my opinion it fits with the games flair quite well. As an added bonus, there is also a collection, where you can unlock the enemy's and item's with earned currency and view their stats and info. And a sandbox mode to test stuff out, if you're into that.
Cat and mouse game of carefully choosing when to engage and not engage in combat. 3 hours in and I still haven't finished a single run yet (I've played about 5 runs). I enjoy the randomness of the world generation and each of the characters you choose from play differently enough to add variety to the gameplay. I do have one major point of feedback though: When you get a mutation it's "random". I'd like to see it implemented where you can't roll the same random mutation twice. Looking at you "1% chance to go berserk".
i just like it
Wirklich, wirklich spaßig, aber sehr abhängig vom Zufall: Ein Run kann 3 Minuten oder 30 Minuten dauern! Nichts für Leute, die schnell frustriert sind. :-D Mein Let's Play: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyueBl-_LEY&list=PL1dSSASvFWwBCrWE3lkP8zL1x6wD-Z3_y
In this rpg game, you emerge as a lone survivor within a forsaken world filled with monsters and demons with nothing more than a note to meet another survivor far north through the wilderness overtaken by otherworldy beasts. With nowhere to go and nothing left, your only choice left is to follow this lead into the eldritch filled land before you. Gameplay https://youtu.be/JIo3OAu1brk
fun little romp, worth the couple bucks they're asking for
