About

The original DRL remains free on the ChaosForge website and will continue to receive updates alongside the new Jupiter Hell Classic version. Jupiter Hell Classic is continuing development of the entire series, now spanning over 20 years.

Read that again, let it sink in. The lore might be a bit confusing at first, but it all makes sense.
First, there was that legendary hell-shooter from the '90s. Then, in 2002, came a turn-based fan project that reimagined that chaos as a roguelike - fast, brutal, and built for coffee breaks. And players saw that it was good. For 14 glorious years, it brought turn-based carnage to a devoted fanbase.
Then, in 2016, came the un-making. The hell-hordes of lawyers descended on the game and all that was left was three lettersD R L. Was it still good, though? Hell yeah. And then, in 2019, came Jupiter Hell. The modern(ish) remake. Still with us? Remake of the unmake.
The year is 2024, and it's sure as hell time for the story to go full-circle with another demake. Jupiter Hell Classic, the demake of the remake of the unmake of the 2002 legendary roguelike that proved fast-paced action belongs in a turn-based RPG.

I preferred DRL over Jupiter Hell (not classic) so this was good to see in the works. For the uninitiated, this game is a very short, fast-paced traditional roguelike. No grinding, no hunger, one straight line to the bottom. I think some trad roguelike nerd site I read once called it a "coffee break" roguelike? I'd put each run at about an hour and a half at length if you win, so, I think that's shorter than even Shattered Pixel Dungeon gets, if you're familiar. I don't miss the pain mechanic at all, and I do prefer the pixel art artstyle and the previous game's talents, I just also did not miss being able to blow up loot with explosions (fireangel eating poorly in this house). The new special maps tend to have "it just kills you" mechanics you're not gonna know how to deal with the first time around - feels really bad when two different rooms I can think of off the top of my head start filling with lava unavoidably, and only find out in the graveyard file (should you know how to read it) that you were expected to run down a *different* corridor - and it's annoying to have to trial-and-error upgrade every single item in the game to have assemblies logged. The active abilities every class gets is kind of poorly tutorialized, I had to give the help page four reads through to find out what button it was.
I recently discovered and fell in love with traditional rogue-likes like Rogue, Nethack, ADOM, etc. The fact that someone/people turned Doom into one is just awesome for nostalgia. It doesn't have the ASCII style that I have come to love, but this game is great! I know there exists DoomRL and other free versions of this game, but I was happy to throw a few bucks to the dev(s) for support. It's not as complex as the roguelikes from the '80s and '90s, which is perfect for the times that I just want to play and reminisce without doing too much thinking. It's my relax roguelike. (still some thinking and strategy involved, though). The metal music is a great touch also! I highly recommend this game for anyone that likes traditional roguelikes and the classic Doom games. Thanks, Chaosforge! Edit: A couple minutes after I made this review, I found the DRL mod pack in the Steam workshop. Now I like it even more! The sound effects and the music are familiar, from the classic games. I love how it gives the option (at startup) to choose between DRL and Jupiter Hell Classic. This game is awesome.
GFG 9000 (Good Freaking Game)
Finally, the supreme form of DRL. Jupiter Hell's art and vibe changes kinda ruined a perfect system for me, so to see it essentially "fork" an earlier path of development like this to keep the old vibes while still progressing was extremely exciting. This game will always be the perfect example of a coffee break roguelike, and I'm glad that it can continue as its own thing now without the IP baggage or the weird 3D stuff. It's finally free. I mean, not literally free. I'm glad to give the devs my money, though. If you've never heard of DRL or anything like that, I still think this is for you, because it's for anyone interested in traditional roguelikes. It's one of the simplest ones, yet it still follows all the rules, down to the movement grid and item management particulars. It's a great introduction to the subgenre without being boring to veterans - far from it! P.S. it's truly Steam Deck optimized with a great control scheme and everything. That does a lot for its pick up and play nature.
I like this better than Jupiter Hell because I don't have to keep using cover
Compared to the old freeware DRL, this is well on its way to differentiating itself into its own experience. Compared to the previous game Jupiter Hell, it's a lot faster paced and more arcadey, and a lot of the UI is stripped down for simplicity (perhaps a bit too far). Features are still being added but it's already quite good. Regardless of which game in the series you want to play, there's a ton of strategic depth, varied builds and challenge runs. The gun-focused turn based roguelike has a very unique feel that I haven't really seen from anyone else. Thanks to the challenge runs, the difficulty curve that stretches all the way from "manageable for anyone patient" to "very few human beings can beat this" for the hardest badges. Don't buy this expecting to 100% it easily!
Old school roguelike. Roguelike as it should be. It seems it's under quite active development, updates come regularly.
English / Français Not recommanded if : _ You hate kittens and want to hurt them (puppy too). _ You don't eat meat. _ You hate turn-based game or using your Brain. _ You are an evil demon and don't want to friendly fire. I didn't played this game, just bought "Classic" to support the Devs because the first Jupiter Hell is a Masterpiece of turn-based traditional RogueLike (more focused on range but melee is possible and my fav) and deserve all the praise for the Doom-Sci fi-horror vibes + metal music (and the price is so low/worth it). BTW Devs added tons of content in original game, for FREE and AGAIN !!! (3rd massiv update adding content after release - last one 6 years later).
Beautiful and great! super easy to get into if you are hesitant on pure-roguelike styles! Give it a try!
Boring, ameteurish. Compared to other roguelikes it doesn't communicate the important information without requiring spoilers and wikis. Gigantic difficulty spike in dante that just has you raising your arms in confusion as to how the game expects you to deal with the incoming damage despite having 90 hp and insane armor and killing everything in 1-2 shots. (I am greater player in DCSS, a game that actually communicates how to deal with the challenges it has and rewards your build crafting by actually making you feel powerful). I was absolutely nuking everything that entered my screen before dante and then all the sudden I am taking 45 damage per hit with one guy on my screen. I look at him and his page shows nothing about what his attack does or how much damage it does or how to avoid it. Awful at show don't tell, the game requires you to play a tutorial to learn the rules of the game rather than teaching you them organically via gameplay. The monster and item screens are esoteric and unclear and don't give you enough information to be useful. There is little to no information in game that helps you understand what the various terms mean (Just absolutely lapped by DCSS here having a full lookup of every enemy and item in the game at a keystroke.) Probably won't play again. The first two third of the game is way too easy and boring with little decision making besides which guy to shoot first and which of the dumb masteries you are going to chain your character to for the rest of the game. And chaining the difficulty of your game to RNG ammo availability is just stupid. It ends up feeling like a slot machine half the time. Just a poorly made game. I honestly can't believe this has 20+ years of game dev put into it.
