About

Blending elements both old and new, Shadowed: the Demon Castle of Ooe is a unique medieval Japanese take on the tradition of games like Angband and Nethack. The basics of Shadowed are simple, but the resource management, build decisions, and brutal status effects are not. With unique enemies and costly abilities, Shadowed aims to provide a tactical experience, rather than one based purely on game knowledge.
Exiled from the Japanese imperial city, your character is on a one-way trip to "scout" a demonic castle. The legendary demon Shuten-Doji surely must have died centuries ago, and yet somehow, the Ooe mountain once again runs red with blood. Go forth to the castle, and wash clean your dishonor with death. No matter your prowess, a lowborn warrior such as you could never actually hope to prevail... Or so the imperial court thinks.

Shadowed: the Demon Castle of Ooe features:
Long-term decision making: Everything you do ticks up your fatigue, which you can only wash away after defeating bosses on certain levels. Every character has access to unique and powerful weapon techniques and class spells, but use them too liberally, and you may not last.
Interesting levels: With over 4 groundbreaking level generation algorithms, unique roguelite-style events with choices, and special features like optional one-way teleports and center vaults, exploration in Shadowed is always varied and rewarding. Stairs are placed in roughly the opposite side of where you spawn, so you always have a rough idea of where to go, or what to avoid if you wish to explore everything with minimal backtracking.
Deadly enemies: Large emphasis has been placed on giving enemies unique abilities, strengths, weaknesses, and counterplay. Prepare resistances for some, debilitate others with statuses, avoid melee combat or ranged fights... Almost every enemy in Shadowed is a special creature based on Japanese myth, and many have devastating tricks up their sleeves.
Builds and upgrades: Shadowed has a unique stat system with five stats(Strength, Agility, Precision, Spirit, and Cunning) that all have some usefulness for every class. With over 240 perks, many synergies are possible with things like stealth kills, weapon techniques, status effects, class mechanics, summons and much more.
Symmetrical status effects: Shadowed has five elements and many impactful statuses, ranging from poison to immolation to berserk to charm. Both the player and enemies can be affected by all of them, enemies often have crippling elemental weaknesses, and many can be permanently charmed to the player's side and controlled as allies.
Stealth gameplay: Sneaking past enemies can give more EXP than defeating them, but you won't get their loot. Stealth has many features like stealth stats, sound investigation, vision cones, sneak attacks, predictable movement patterns; and you can always see which direction an enemy is facing, as well as where they will face next.
No gotchas: RNG is always a factor in roguelikes, but in Shadowed, you may examine an enemy to see what it is capable of, any time you like. You always know exactly how far away bosses/rests are, and the level exits are always placed in a consistent pattern.
Preparation systems: Shadowed has an item preparation system that lets you prepare items to use instantly, but punishes you for using them from the bag. Scout well, be prepared for most situations in general, or run the risk of fumbling for what you need most.
Strong class fantasy: Ninjas can sneak attack, hide, use weapon poisons, shuriken, kunai, bombs, special ninpo spells, and more. The Ronin is a juggernaut capable of unleashing huge attacks as he builds up his ki through fighting. The Onmyoji prepares spells to be used between levels, relying on knowledge, divination, and elemental fury to survive. Shadowed exists to be a more flavorful and in-depth exploration of oriental classes, rather than them being a tacked-on afterthought.
Immersion: Sound, music, graphics, and event descriptions all come together to create a very immersive experience for those with a little imagination.
Note: "Ooe" is pronounced "Oh-eh". Shadowed is available in both English and (coming soon)Japanese.

There's a lot to learn and explore in this game and whilst it can be initially overwhelming it's also satisfying to discover the systems in the game and the more you play the clearer everything becomes. The tutorial is a must play that really helped introduce the game and there's also extensive help pages explaining how the game works. The stealth mechanic is very interesting and the fact stealth gives more exp than fighting really adds to the identity of the game as a ninja game. The enemy design is really nice, I love reading all the descriptions. The game has a lot of individual keyboard key binds and no native controller support. As someone who can't easily play that way I'm still playing on controller using layered binds with radial menus I made here on steam. It took me ages to set up so I've uploaded my template in case anyone wants to use it. I would recommend adapting it to your own preferences of course!
This game needs more User Interface customization, looking at the rule book in Black and White hurts my eyes. I understand there is information that needs to be up front to the player, but it can be overwhelming sometimes. When there is a lot of empty space available then why is the Text Size so small to begin with? Doesn't make sense. Look at "The Great Abyss Cyclopean", it has a great user interface with a unique art style to boot. By the way I'm playing in Full Screen 1920 x 1080 pixels if your wondering. You have to get players go past the first hurdle to play your game. I'll keep playing your game, I'll get used to it eventually.
Outstanding game. The real meat of it is the stealth and exp system, both of which work together to reward you for scouting an entire floor and sneaking past enemies without them seeing you (shadowed). It makes every floor of every run engaging, and it does a good job of selling being a ninja. If you're a fan of Tenchu or stealth games, I think this might be one of the best representations of it in this format. Definitely give it a shot.
Can't review because I can't play. Only 2 resolution options: smaller one has text that's too tiny, and larger one cuts things off the screen. What I could experience in the game was unpleasant. I did play Rift Wizard 2 for 130 hours, so I can handle very basic graphics if there's enough other pros to the game. But here, the music is absent most of the time, all characters look the same, it feels unintuitive to play, there's no autoexplore (I think), the mouse can barely be used for anything... I could go on.
Absolutely cracking traditional RL, with a unique setting and mechanics for the genre. Great dev as well. Highly recommend.
This game deserves way more attention in the traditional roguelike community. if you’re into traditional roguelikes, you already know the big titles without me naming them. We’ve seen roguelikes with characters like zombie survivors, sci-fi mutant planet explorers, gun-blazing space mercs, wizards, and every generic fantasy class. We’ve played roguelikes that emphasize crafting and realism, survival, zombies, deep skills and combat mechanics, gunplay, fantasy settings, complex magic, sci-fi exploration, even the ones built around stupid endless grind. But here’s the thing: There hasn’t been a traditional roguelike with a ninja character that really emphasizes stealth mechanics, like vision cones and enemy facing directions Big thanks to the devs. Hope this one climbs high, it deserves a spot among the best in the genre.
Demon slaying traditional roguelike with japanese fantasy. It has stealth focused ninja, ranged/utility focused ninja, seducer/magician ninja, monk, samurai, court magician and an abomination as classes. It feels unbalanced at times and it has significant bugs time to time especially with the Kamikui class (Godeater abomination class). However the developer quickly fixes bugs, and rapidly improves the game. Good and cheap game for what it is.
It's Metal Gear Solid: Rougelike. Oh so very close to greatness! I LOVE the atmosphere and setting, and the game has a host of intriguing play mechanics. The biggest bar to entry is just how un-intuitive the UI is, and how difficult it feels to have full control over your selected character. Still, there's tons of depth to the game, and there's nothing else like it. It looks and sounds great too. Definitely recommended
