It's not bad. It's not great, either. My main problem so far is the grind. I've become sour on the roguelite structure after approximately 5,000 games that didn't need it used it anyway over the last 10 years, but you could still make it good. This needs balance. You start off pretty underpowered, and while you'll likely blast through the first level or two without much issue, most of the bosses are just a giant wall of death that you're going to need to scale up to beat. And you scale up by playing the game over and over, slowly buying and collecting all the little things needed to make your character and weapons more powerful. But the grind is way too heavy. In a well-balanced roguelite, after every run you should feel like you've accomplished something unless you bombed out early, and that's just not the case here. Behaviour should realize that among the reviews that are reasonable and not from people who played the game for 0.1 hours and were so triggered by it they're now threatening to suicide bomb their local Piggly Wiggly, that the grind is everyone's #1 complaint by a distance. Aesthetically, the game is again both good and bad. All the Sams (Broken, Cartoon, Alien, and Retro) feel like Sam. He curses, he's stoic, his answer to everything is let's blow it up. There's some kind of story about... well, I don't really know, there's a robot voice that's always flapping its robot lips and I ignore it. Something or other about a multiverse, I don't care. And thankfully it's easy to ignore as the sound mix in this game feels off, nothing is ever quite loud enough. The level design and art is also hit or miss -- the ancient Egypt throwback level was a delight and should bring back many Serious Sam memories, but some of the ice and snow levels are just like big blobs of purple and light blue. There's more levels I like than dislike, but those snow levels make it feel like there's two colors in the game. Shatterverse could turn out well if they keep balancing it, try to make each run feel like a step forward. It seems like there's a lot of cool weapons and powers and arenas in the game, I don't know why I need to grind for 30 hours to see most of them.

Maybe I'm just biased as I love Serious Sam but I genuinely don't understand the hate here. Serious Sam Shatterverse is in no way meant to be a mainline title or a replacement of Croteam's classic formula of Serious Sam. Has anyone ever played the spinoffs before? Let's all take a step back here and set our expectations correctly. This is a rogue-like game. You are going to die. Probably a lot. That is what rogue-likes are. You die, learn from your mistakes and collect trinkets through every playthrough so that you slowly build more strength despite the trials and errors. Again, this is a rogue-like. If you're a serious sam fan and you're jumping in expecting it to be like the mainline games, you're going to be disappointed. I could scroll through these reviews and talk about the absurd complaints people are having, but in this case it's really just a matter of playing the game yourself and coming up with your own opinion.
Here's what I think:
I haven't played too much of it but I absolutely love it. It's a blend of familiarity yet still new enough to feel refreshing. Compared to the playtest, it feels as though each mission has a random set of rooms each playthrough and I'm all for it. There's a lot of throwbacks too. Most of the original enemies and weapons make a comeback and there's a few areas referenced from the older games as well. I also enjoy the aspect of enemies having stronger variations popping in the further you progress. Reminds me of Destiny in some aspects which I also quite enjoy. I'm not sure what the replayability will be like once you complete all the difficulties, but given each playthrough feels different from the next, I imagine there will be quite some time spent here. Hopefully more future updates to come. The silly tone and visuals don't particularly bother me either. Serious Sam Double D XXL was easily one of the most bizarre spinoffs out there yet it was received quite well. I think the community wanted a new mainline Serious Sam and despite the many indications of it NOT being that, they were let down and disappointed. Either way, as long as I live I'll always enjoy Serious Sam whether it's a spinoff or a mainline game. Keep em' coming.
I spent an hour with the game and refunded. Its a generic looter shooter in a Serious Sam skin suit. Also, its called Serious Sam, why is OG Sam relegated to the back right? Its a little nitpicky I know but imo OG Sam should he front and center with all the Sam's around him.
Really shows that it's outsourced to a dev who has no clue how to make an FPS game. Myriad of bug fixes won't remedy it, as it has deeper design issues. I might be too harsh, given that I haven't played much at all, but honestly I can't even be bothered to keep trying. Don't have much hope of it improving either, but I look forward to being proven wrong.
Unreal engine stutter. Don't buy.
nope absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of a game, shouldnt have even bother releasing this trash, playtest was ♥♥♥♥, game is still ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥ off. would refund this pile of ♥♥♥♥ if it wasnt a gift
