About
Face off against friends on the couch, or play online in 1v1 and Free-for-All battles. Enjoy reliable rollback netcode in Ranked and Casual Matchmaking. You can even set up a private lobby to hang out and play with your friends.
HAYAO is the best character to start with. He is by far the fastest character in the game, and in Samurai GUNN 2, that makes him one of the strongest.
OTOMO shoots fireballs that can trap opponents (and herself if you’re not careful!). She can slash through her fire traps to gain an incredible boost of speed for a limited time.
GOLEM can create destructible stone blocks with his bullets. He can even create statues that can obstruct, frustrate, and crush opponents.
POPS is slow and strong–very dangerous in close quarters. He can dash-grab opponents and send them flying to their explosive deaths. He can even dash-grab their bullets and return-to-sender. His bullets explode on impact and the splash damage can kill through walls.
GHOST has an echo float ability that makes her unpredictable in air combat. Pay close attention because her bullets are invisible, She can temporarily turn invisible as well when she dashes. Chain together successive kills to remain invisible and terrify your opponents.
SLUG is the choice for high IQ players. So many tricks–he can stick to walls and run on the ceiling. He shoots kunai instead of bullets that he (or his opponents!) can retrieve and re-fire. He can tilt the kunai in unpredictable directions. He’s kind of slow, but he has a fast-fall mixup to catch opponents off-guard. Try him once you’ve mastered the basics.
Helmsley is our most complicated character by far. Grind along stage surfaces to earn ammo, then use ammo to charge up your next move, whether that's firing a shotgunn with crazy spread, or going full berserk with a giant iron sword. Do you have the guts to take on Helmsley's mental load? Mastering Helmsley will require even the best Samurai Gunn players to retrain their muscle memory.
RANNO plays completely differently than the samurai characters, retaining his unique traits from Rivals of Aether. Fast on the ground + slow in the air, Ranno can fling around the stage with his toxic tongue grab, launch a spread of poisonous darts, and tumble unsuspecting opponents with his bubble trap.

UPDATE: actually, I think I just don't like it the fundamentals feel too twitchy and reflex oriented - wish I had been aware of my distaste for that when I got the game feels nebulously unfair often most importantly though, it feels like the game is being built for balance at the cost of fun balance is great when it's there to support fun, but that doesn't feel like what's happening here somehow water is apparently important (you fall in and you immediately lose all your ammo, not fun) also apparently characters being extremely map-countered is a vital core thing too I don't get it I really don't get it this is also in addition to my previous issues with the game, which are still included below ---- why did they increase the price now?? I don't often question pricing choices on games, but this is really weird. I can understand raising it at some point, but currently the game, while much more polished, has only a fraction of the content it had previously, and notably lacks adventure mode, which isn't planned to return in any direct official way. The game is still very fun and mostly great currently (ranno my beloved), but I don't believe it's worth 20 dollars yet. I plan to change this review once the bulk of the previous characters get reimplemented, but for now I can't recommend buying it at full price. Though, it's still worth noting that the original version with all the content is still accessible on a beta branch. Also, a secondary thing in regards to personal taste - the game took on a new level of "intensity" in the update, which I'm not particularly fond of. The title screen is harsh, bright, and fiery, and it opens to rap music, sung by the new (vaguely aggressive(?)) announcer. The game also has ranks to progress and badges to unlock based on your performance. It's now played in games composed of multiple rounds now, with one big final winner, rather than the simple previous format of "one round - last one alive wins the game". Someone on the discord stated it in a way that stuck with me: "I feel like everything took on a "Samurai Gunn 2: Championship Edition" kinda vibe, but in the end there isn't really a "base Samurai Gunn 2" because of it." The new intense vibe is cool, I guess, but it's really not to my taste. I think this could be solved by having: - a way to disable the experience tracker - a setting to switch to a mellower interface and title screen, more similar to the previous version - and a mode to do single-match rounds, like the previous version I absolutely do not mean to be ungrateful for the game, it's already great so far, and only improving with each update. It's just a bit short on content for the moment.
This is a game where it shines on the simplicity of being able to pick it up and be able to slash & shoot through your foes on a chill saturday night but it also has the depth to create intense FGC moments, so considering that theres a premium and free version of this, there is no reason why you shouldnt be playing this game more in your life. Samurai Gunn 2 is another peak example of the beauty of indie games. 9.9/10 If the devs are reading this though...rework ghost please, Invisibility should not be a game mechanic.
Game's got a lot of sauce but missing a few simple QOL features to make it worth buying. To start, add the ability to rematch without returning to the lobby in private matches and rematching online period.
Very accessible 2D fighter game with rollback netcode. Still raw, still early access, but goes in the right direction.
Why did they take away amongus? 😢 There were so many cool characters and stages and now theyre all gone. The stages are a lot smaller now too. It was so peak and still is but its missing its awesome sauce that made it so good. This really makes me sad. The game crashes a lot as well. Also please remove the edgy rap music and the weird narrator. Its really cringe
I love this game. Good mechanics. Simple enough to pick up and play. Complex enough to master. However, I hate the level design. It feels like half the levels have water in them which makes it so you can't shoot and can't dash. It takes what is already a simple 2d fighter and makes it even simpler. I'd have way more hours in this if it wasn't for that. Played it a lot with a group of friends and almost every level one of us was saying, "Ughhh this level. I hate this level."
Keep up the great work! This game has always been our family's absolute favorite to play together during holidays, or gathering! From the first game to the second, it has brought us over a decade of joy!! It's crazy to think the first one came out way back in 2013! I originally got hooked during the first game because of a review that described it as "the last 5 minutes of a martial arts movie"! This major update is absolutely amazing. Honestly, I was a bit heartbroken when I realized my old progress was wiped out, but after actually playing it, I completely understand why the team decided to rebuild the engine. The gameplay is so smooth, the pace is intense, and every strike is instantly lethal! BTW,Where is my Minit gang?? Keep up the great work!
rather dope
Actually feels like a proper pixel samurai fighter. I'm terrible at this game, but I can't put it down.
Immaculately simple, super easy to pick up and play characters and two complex characters for people who really want to get their hands dirty. Free to play version was what hooked me initially and needed to get my hands on Golem. Haven't looked back. Wonderful community as well, I haven't been online recently but it's small and tightknit for now and there's someone always wanting to fight. I will fight for this game.
