I had hopes for this game, but unfortunately it seems like it won't be developed further, and I don't think it's worth the price in its current state. Even with the current 30% off I'd say only get it if you really like what you see. The game is mostly good, very atmospheric, nice music, there are no major bugs. However the gameplay is very rigid/static/uncreative, short and unbalanced. There are interesting ideas in it, but they aren't developed enough or used in a meaningful way. That's the main reason I didn't give it a negative review right away... because there seemed to be potential. The first one is self-explanatory: for sandbox games you'll do the exact same things every time. Missions are different, but they usually force a certain kind of gameplay as well, because your options are limited. However you won't make meaningful choices, like having to choose between a leaf shelter, a mud hut or an underground shelter, depending on the island and weather. You'll have the same resources and same options every game. The game is short, most of my playtime was testing and going for achievements (some of which are still broken). A sandbox game shouldn't take more than 2-3 hours. The missions take even less time, and some of them can be difficult if you can't figure out the trick for the map, but they're 20 in-game days max. Then there's the balance issue. There's too much wild food, starting from 1st autumn you can live off of chestnuts. The 2 disasters in-game are high winds and tornado, they're mostly trivial, really. The only difficulty comes from you not being able to split resources, because a tornado will destroy everything on a tile, and the game auto-stacks identical resources. High winds will destroy trees (somehow without giving you any resources) and frequent enough they can kill all trees. So the disasters are kinda binary in this regard: they either cause little to no damage, or they just destroy you. Overall pretty decent game with some good ideas, the gameplay is kinda unique, but in this state I don't think it's worth anyone's time. If anything it feels like a demo or an early access game.
Not quite sure how to review this. I will preface this with saying that this isn't a terribly long game. Seeds of Resilience is a really curious genre hybrid. I could almost describe it as Dwarf Fort or Rimworld, but turn based. This allows you to choose what each of your castaways do each day in extreme detail - whether it's farming, building, or something else. Understanding the cycle of seasons on the island, and how to manage the island's limited resources to avoid starving or running out, is critical. So this really is a game of environmental stewardship - and, ultimately, of terraforming, as you reshape the island to better suit your needs. All of this makes for a really interesting, thought-provoking game. However, once you understand these systems, and can work with them? You've ultimately won the game. There is a real joy in experimenting, failing, struggling, and waiting for a lucky crate to wash up on the shores to help you cope with a critical resource that you've foolishly exhausted, giving you a chance - if you can survive - to regrow a forest, for example. It is fun exploring how this game works. But, it is limited, and I don't feel any need to replay it. Get this game if you want something original to occupy you for an afternoon or two.
TDLR: Wait a year and check back, It still has a long way to go. So I played this game for 4 hours on stream. Going into it I had high hopes and was wanting to have a good time. I found the missions or tutorial in this case lacking a bit. Some of it is intuitive gamer stuff, but I feel a tutorial should handhold a bit. Pretend the player has never picked up a video game before let alone your game. It should explain the main mechanics of the game with lots of arrows pointing at what you need to do. There is a lot I didn't like but I did enjoy the art style I like the way it all looks. I enjoyed that over fishing depleted fish in the area. I liked the energy system and perks of characters. Gathering resources was interesting since you need tools the older the resource but you got more for each harvest. As for the game as a whole, I see what the developer was trying to do, but I feel its not developed enough to let that idea come through. I was waiting on bamboo to grow to advance and living off of chestnuts. The progression just seems off to me in 4 hours playing I only got more complex housing up in normal difficulty and that's because there was more bamboo to actual progress. The storms are more annoying then anything, having to re build the huts and not being able to progress forward just killed it. Plants have to be planted the first or second day of spring or they don't grow in time and usually get one harvest. Food stops being an issue once you hit fall cause chestnuts are plenty, you plant a bunch of chest nut trees harvest every fall and you never run out of food. I feel like getting people in normal is not common enough and fine in merciless. The buildings for the island size are too big you have no choice but to over crowd your islands with buildings which forces resources to be rare. I didn't get to use most buildings so I can't say whether they are all useful or not. Overall I did not have a good time, not for a lack of trying I played even though it just wasn't enjoyable. I tried to find the fun it just wasn't there for me. I can see it getting better but needs bigger maps for the size of the buildings, better balancing of food system, better progression, I got nowhere in 4 hours and it sucked because the concept is there, the idea is there its just not developed enough. Good Luck to the developer I hope you can get this game to a better place. Sorry for the bad review but I can't lie about my experience I hope you can change my experience in a year or two. Best of Luck to you!
Binged the whole thing in a weekend and enjoyed it all. For the price it's great value. The turn based survival system works well, way better than I expected. All the reviews about lack of tutorial and clarity are presumably before the missions update - these make the mechanics very clear imo. My only gripes would be that the balance is off - fishing is expensive for poor returns, while farming is easy and swamps you with food. Sometimes felt like there wasn't much to manage and strategise beyond simply waiting for bamboo, trees, etc to grow. Maybe needs more complexity like food preservation, soil fertilisation, pests, crop rotation, whatever, just some more mechanics to balance, more obstacles to fight against beyond the random annoying tornadoes. It's a cheap game though so you can't expect massive layers of mechanics, and is overall good fun and value for money.
I liked this game... for 9 hours. After that I'd beaten the game and realized it has ZERO replayability. If I were to start a new game I'd just end up doing the same exact thing, no options to go a different route or try something different. This feels like an early access game due to the lack of content. This game had decent potential but only getting single digit hours of fun out of it means it's a "no" for me, dawg. Just keep playing something like Rimworld for the 600th playthrough.
The game is in desperate need of a beefier crafting and construction list, certainly, but more than that it needs to find its purpose, or a hook of any kind. There’s nothing to latch onto, and no moment where everything clicks and it becomes clear where the game is heading.
The concept of the game is good though I had to say that this game is still early and there is a lot of work needs to be done. However, the game does have potential. The graphics are simple but not bad, it's interesting to see how the game develop and I can't wait to see improvements. I have tried restarting a new game several times since the map is generated according to your seed. Something needs to be fix about this because I tried a random seed and there is at least 2 of the generated map did not spawn any berries (you will need to gather this for the objectives which requires you to collect (0/6) foods) for food source, I might missed alot of things here because there is no real tutorial in game, basically figured something out myself but yes some of the things that should be generated was missing. Thats all I can review for now since this is an Early Access game, I will update this review later on.
This is a great Proof of Concept. Clearly, a lot of effort went into research for the game, but this project will never realize its potential. It suffers from classic first-time developer issues: the small team spent years re-doing the artwork, re-doing the User Interface, changing game engines, instead of focusing on gameplay. They got burnt out and decided to release in this state; a game with little progression and no story. I suppose this is a half-decent survival simulator, where you manage natural resources to ensure adequate food and shelter, but there's not a lot to do and there's very little replay value.
The game is enjoyable. It's slow, calm, peaceful, and makes a good time-killer. But, the core Missions are not well thought out. They range from "Tutorial Easy," to "You have to everything in exactly the right way and hope a Storm doesn't screw you." (I'm looking at you Desert Island.) The game also has a lot of room to be fleshed out. The learning Curve is kinda brutal, because you aren't given any real direction outside "Get food, make homes, and do the Objective," and as calm and passive at is it, it's also rather shallow. The threat of storms are more a nuisance than a threat, and since the only Storms are either "strong winds" or "hurricane" it can get boring if you play in longer stretches. That said, the game is in development, so in some time it maybe fleshed out enough to recommend in the future, but for now. It's just not enough.
