SEA SALT, I NEED YOU SEA SALT, WHERE IS OMNI-MAN? Are you sure? YOU CALL THAT A pretty sure, threw a steak into a steak. YOU CALL THAT A STEAK? Mark, this is good news, we can finally be bees. IN 500 YEARS WHAT WILL YOU HAVE? Your steaks dad, I'd still have your steaks. WHERE IS HE? SEA SALT, SEA SALT I NEED YOU CALL THAT A STEAK? Mark, I made a steak. We may have made a steak. Me and your mom have something of a steak steak relationship. I'm from Viltrum but it's not the planet I told you about, we don't make steaks. Debbie, I made you a steak. Hello, my name is Rex and I made a steak, my skeleton is a steak, they infused me with steaks. Steaking Rae... I'm sorry your steak was eaten. I love H.P Lovecraft and I love this game. <3
"lets make an rts about resource menagement, where a bad fight can leave you in a dead spiral where you just don't have enough units to keep going, but the controls give you only the vaguest, tiniest bit of control of your units" Sadly, the mechanics are at odds with each other. The gameplay looks like it expects you to micro your army, squeezing as much value from the limited amount of units you get for each mission, then makes microing completely impossible. But if you just zerg rush the enemies, you'll army will die from AoE. It's not even that hard, you can micro well enough to finish the game, but it always feels like you were given the wrong tool for the job. You don't feel like the unstoppable flood of monsters, because you have to play carefully, as the enemies are stronger and have better abilities, but you don't feel like a clever strategist, because your mindless army don't freaking listen to you half the time. The story and graphics are great, but the gameplay is the most important part, and it's just not up to snuff.
Looks like a cool simple game, and actually does pretty good in setting, music, variety, price... but the controls? I'm sorry, minions are just beyond stupid, and since the game is all about them, this is a big problem.
Sea salt is a wonderful swarm simulator. You play as an eldritch God frustrated with a neighboring town for their heresy of not worshipping you well enough, and you have decided its time to unleash your babies onto them to correct their non worshipping ways. The game is a delight and gives you access to so many different little horrors that you never get bored with munching, blasting, and ripping your way to victory. the economics of units is pretty solid and the game doesn't ever feel impossible. this game is so good that it has you wanting more. it was released in 2019 its been over 6 years and i still lay awake at night wishing they would make a second game or release more content for this one, DEVS IM BEGGING YOU MAKE MORE SEA SALT ITS TOO GOOD!
This is a Nintendo Switch game that was ported to PC. It plays a bit like a reverse Vampire Survivor, or one of those zombie horde Flash games where you control a horde of monsters (in this case undersea horrors, once more an amateur developer has dug up the corpse of HP Lovecraft to abuse his legacy). Being designed for the Nintendo Switch, while the idea might be seen as appealing, the gameplay is clunky and awkward. You have to use WASD to move a cursor around and then tell your minions to attack at the right moments as all the puny humans run away from your eldritch horrors. Ok, the theme is fun, but the game sucks. It's slow, plodding, and you'll quickly lose interest after the first couple of levels. I did. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. Because this is designed for handheld/portable gaming appliances, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the low power handheld gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the mobile game developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for low power handhelds forces upon a game. While this might run well on a Steam Deck, we must remember the vast majority of gamers here are gaming on PC. The amateur pixelcrap visual presentation here at best could have been an attempt to use "retro" as a crutch, a weak excuse to avoid admitting the developer wasn't capable of doing the job of a game developer this decade and creating cutting edge, high quality 3D visuals. While a lack of skill or funding is the explanation for this failure, it's no excuse. The end result of this incompetence is a game that looks dramatically inferior to professionally developed games. Terraria and Undertale succeeded despite looking crap, not because they look crap. While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. To make matters worse, there's no mouse input, despite this being sold on PC as if it were a PC game. This is unacceptable and somewhat insulting to PC gamers. It's a good demonstration of the poor attitude the developer has towards PC gamers, and this attitude has resulted in yet another defect in this game. Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the GameMaker Studio construction kit/toolset. This is a very poor quality toolset favoured by amateur developers as it's cheap and requires little in the way of development skill, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. GameMaker Studio is most commonly used to make retro pixel shovelware and cash grabs. A strong argument can be made that construction kits like GameMaker Studio should never be used to make games for profit, as the "developer", YCJY Games has done here. These construction kits are intended to teach people some of the basic principles of game development, and to make small demos to pass around with friends. They're not intended to replace to actual work of real, professional game developers. So it's inappropriate when amateurs try to use these for profit, without any actual, real game development effort taking place. This doesn't result in products that have any real meaningful value for gamers. Those technical flaws drag this game well below the minimum quality standards expected of a modern PC game. Let's talk about pricing and the actual value this has for gamers. Is this game one of the best of the 140,000+ games on Steam? Sea Salt has the ridiculous, laughable price of $15 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. For comparison, the $15 asking price for this game could get you games like "Halo: The Master Chief Collection", "Resident Evil Village" or "Valheim". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this. No pixelcrap is worth $15. If developers want to get paid the same kind of money as real game developers who know how to do graphics properly, they need to learn how to do graphics properly. The quality problems and defects with this game makes the asking price totally unrealistic. It's impossible to recommend this to gamers here on Steam.
Sinopsis
