This game isn't even close to being finished. Just a small selection of bugs I encountered in the first hour, in random order. - Music doesn’t play - Placeholder text - Text formatting still has tags from code in it - Pop ups in the middle of battle and boss fights, blocking all vision - Get stuck in the map, in the ground, and on enemies - Died, but was still able to move, attack and eventually heal, basically walking around with 0 HP - I die and I don’t get any revive options, requiring me to restart the game - Frame drops all over the place - Bad voice acting (okay, that’s not a bug, but it bugs me) - Settings reset constantly - Keybinds don’t work This whole thing is basically in alpha, beta if I’m being generous. This isn’t even Early Access!
I realy want to like this but its quite buggy and find the way the game works bit cumbersome and annoying. The voices dont work; annoying pop ups in fight; music doesnt work; placeholder names etc. Its an unfinished game.
Take my review with a grain of salt. ***I understand that the team behind this title is really small (3 members?) and they chose to make a game in two years that would inevitably be compared by fans to huge titles like Diablo or POE. Risky manoeuvre. So there's that. ***I myself, as an arpg fan, dumping hundreds of hours in Diablo an POE, find difficult to stay away from the industry standard of this genre but I'll try to see the game as it is. ***Not great, not terrible. It is what one would expect out of this arrangement. Usually these kind of projects are created by hundreds of people and take years, which is not the case here. ***Expect bugs, some confusing menus, lack of polish, debatable loot and overall "slow" feel. ***The graphics: I understand people are divided on this artstyle it is either love it or hate it. ***Sound/music: I found that some scenes are eerily quiet at times. The music however fits the "vikings" mood. The voice acting is also not the best. ***Story: The intro of the game features a story presentation which reminded me of Age of Empires 2 mission briefs (a tome with some texts and illustrations) with someone narrating it. I understand that I'm a Templar and i discover my Norse origins, so I decide to convert back to my pagan roots with the help of the holy grail (?). That would be the backstory. In the game actually I'm either a ranger or a warrior (you get to pick at the start your class) which is both a Templar and a viking who embarks on a fantastic journey with the assistance of the Gods whose powers you get to use. It was ok, ***Gameplay: There's a lot to talk here, aside from the bugs that are already known and hopefully will be fixed soon. One thing that i liked and felt sort of unique was the Gods system in which you get to use overpowered spells offered by gods to crush your enemies. Also the pillars you find in various places where you interact with the Gods and you can buy various stuff. That was fun too. What (for me) was not fun, was the fact that there was no checkpoint before the boss fight and I had to go back to the starting point upon getting killed by the boss. So i had to replay again a few times the whole game only to get back to the boss in the forest that would just not die... I understand that there are games like Bloodborne that do that. I myself find that it is frustrating, even if the path to the boss is not that long/difficult. All those gameplay related things are not really the greatest turnoff for me as they can be fixed rather quickly. There's something else that I think the devs should consider: the overall feeling is really slow, there's no "oomph" nor "badass" vibe and maybe this is due to the lack of polish. I don't feel nor as a viking nor as a Templar. At times it feels disjointed and incomplete... _______________________________________________ So you may ask why I still recommend this game? I would buy this game only at 50% discount as it stands now and consider it as an Early Access purchase. The devs are working hard to fix all the issues that are submited via the game (there's an option in the menu) or via discord, so feel free to contact them! ***Final thoughts: I can only congratulate the devs for embarking on this difficult and risky journey for such a small team. I think they have something valuable and even if this project may not be their greatest success, it is a promising debut in the game dev industry!
Gotta love them vikings! This is super fun. A throwback to the Diablo days of olde, but with delicious chunky polygons instead. Satisfying controls, lots of customization and menus to mess around with if you're that kind of player. I think I'm having more fun with this one than I did with Valhalla! Recommended 😎🪓
Feels like an unfinished game. No music during fights, clunky animations, lot of bugs and place holder text. It's thursday!
It has been so long since I played a game as satisfying as this. The blood boiling combat is amazing and the story is very intriguing so far. I'm only in the beginning of it and I am already feeling addicted to it.
Might be a fun game if it actually worked. My favorite bug is getting stuck in upgrade screen while enemies keep attacking you.
17 € for a alpha that is so bugged that i wasnt even able to test the game :( for now a refound but i still hope they will be able to pull off what they wanna build up here because game itself looks promising i ll revisit this game for sure tbh EDIT: seems abandoned
I do not recommend Viking Vengeance at full price or even during sales.
You'll be very lucky if you ever reach the locations shown in the Store Page material due to a poor ARPG movement system that causes you to get stuck on most objects, clip out of the map and get stuck on enemies. The game doesn't pause when an upgrade screen appears and therefor if you're in combat you'll continue to be damaged while you're upgrading. It's 2022 as of writing and this hasn't been fixed since launch. The artstyle and abilities are cool game but the game is nowhere close to being polished. Alongside getting stuck on nearly every object in the game as I progress through the first zone I have also fallen off the map into water (the game clearly tells you to avoid water as it'll kill you) due to the poor controls on Keyboard and Mouse. I have had only one instance where the revive system works correctly (placing you back on solid land) with every other case of death reviving me still in the water, thus causing a complete reset to the last save point, as there is no way to escape. Lastly for this review, I got up to the second village and this is where I stopped as I cannot progress any further due to the villagers bricking the quest thanks to enemies walking in front of their walking animation. Characters in this village also have the same dialogue and pop up from a random undead NPC in the previous village even though they are meant to dialogue that informs in on the status of village and how it came be damaged as the quest log indicated. It's definitely not worth $28.95AUD or $8.68 during sales.
Pretty sweet hack n slash/arpg! Love the aesthetic and god synergies! Few bugs here and there but it's a super small group of devs so give them a chance!
