Salammbo: Battle for Carthage is a 2002 game based on a historical Mercenary War and a book telling this story. Our main character Spendius for example is an actual historical figure with a very different outcome. Game is VERY old and VERY dated in terms of graphics. Have some technical problems. This is a point and click adventure game which you look around 360 and interect with objects and try to solve puzzles and progress the story. ++Setting: It has a strange and different art design and added fantasy fiction to a real event. The narrator adds quite a bit to the story. And you really want to know how events are going to unfold because it involves lots of duplicity, betreyal and war. +Gameplay : It's a point and click and have minimal dialog options, however, on critical events and on your deaths a narrator tells your story. You can die in quite a lot ways but because of this feature discovering them didn't felt bad. I liked this :D. On these moments also a comic like panels are shown which is quite original in my opinon. There are some battles, resolves according to your choices and are again told by narrator, These are fine. Other than that its simple adventure. -Technical: With the help from discussions, installing a ddraw.dll Fixes most complaints, no crashes, alt tab is ok etc. Only big downside is game plays VERY fast, usually with point and clicks this is not an issue, however Salammbo has some parts that you have a timer to act. I managed to pass them by trying many times. ( you memorize where to click after a few tries) So it did not prevent me from finishing the game but can annoy some people. If you are patient with old games and want a really original story.
Bulmacalar çok zor değil ama son bölümdeki zaman sınırlı bulmaca sinirimi bozdu zaten oyunun yapısı gereği yavaş çalışıyor. zaman kazanmak için sandalet bulup yemek, bunu da direkt değilde giyinme menüsünden yapmak nedir ya. anlayana kadar öl allah öl . oyun 360 resimlerden oluşuyor yani bir süre sonra yoruyor gözleri. resimler arası geçiş mesafeleri de farklı yerinizi şaşırıyorsunuz. içi içe geçmiş mekanlarla dolu şehrin dokusu karmakarışık. ben nostarjik hislerle devam edip bitirdim. benim gibi gençliğinde oynayamayıp aklınızda kaldıysa oynayın yoksa değmez.
Salammbô: Battle for Carthage, developed by Cryo Interactive and published by Microids, stands as a distinctive entry in the early 2000s adventure genre, drawing heavily from historical inspiration while embracing a bold, almost surreal artistic direction. Loosely based on the world of Gustave Flaubert’s work and visually influenced by the striking style of Philippe Druillet, the game transports players to a version of ancient Carthage that feels less like a strict historical recreation and more like a vivid, dreamlike interpretation of the era. You step into the role of Spendius, a slave navigating a city on the brink of collapse after the First Punic War, and what begins as a simple task gradually unfolds into a much larger journey through political intrigue, conflict, and survival. The gameplay follows a traditional first-person, point-and-click format that will feel familiar to fans of classic adventure titles. Movement is handled through static, pre-rendered environments, where players explore, interact with objects, and solve puzzles to progress. The pacing is deliberate, encouraging careful observation and methodical thinking rather than quick reactions. Puzzles range from straightforward inventory-based challenges to slightly more involved sequences that require attention to environmental details. While these mechanics are rarely groundbreaking, they are consistent enough to support the overall experience without becoming overly frustrating. What truly elevates the game is its visual identity. The influence of Druillet’s art is immediately apparent, with environments that feel grand, unusual, and often otherworldly. Towering structures, intricate designs, and unconventional color palettes give the world a sense of scale and personality that few adventure games of its time managed to achieve. Even today, there’s something memorable about how the game looks, as it leans into stylization rather than realism. This artistic boldness helps compensate for some of the game’s mechanical simplicity, making exploration feel rewarding purely from a visual standpoint. Despite its strong aesthetic, the narrative doesn’t always reach the same level of impact. While the premise is intriguing and the setting rich with potential, the storytelling can feel uneven. The pacing occasionally drags, and certain characters lack the development needed to leave a lasting impression. Key figures come and go without fully realizing their narrative importance, and emotional engagement can be difficult to maintain as a result. The story is serviceable and occasionally compelling, but it rarely achieves the depth that its premise seems to promise. The gameplay loop also tends to remain static throughout the experience. While the puzzles are varied enough to avoid monotony in the short term, they don’t evolve significantly as the game progresses. There are few new mechanics introduced to keep players on their toes, and once the general structure is understood, much of the challenge comes down to persistence rather than ingenuity. This makes the game accessible, particularly for newcomers to the genre, but it may feel limiting for those looking for a more dynamic or demanding adventure. Another factor that subtly shapes the experience is the game’s development history. Created during a turbulent period for Cryo Interactive, the project shows signs of ambition that may not have been fully realized due to external constraints. There are moments where the game hints at a larger, more intricate vision, but these ideas are not always explored to their fullest extent. This gives the overall experience a slightly unfinished feel, as though it’s reaching for something greater than what ultimately appears on screen. In the end, Salammbô: Battle for Carthage is best appreciated as a unique and atmospheric adventure that prioritizes artistic expression over mechanical complexity. It offers a memorable setting and a solid foundation of classic puzzle-solving gameplay, even if it doesn’t fully capitalize on its narrative or design potential. For players who value distinctive visuals and slower-paced exploration, it remains an interesting piece of gaming history. For others, its limitations in storytelling and gameplay depth may hold it back from being truly compelling. Rating: 6/10
