For the price you can get this game it is without a doubt a fun time. Only about 4 hours to beat the campaign but in that time you really get a feel for the combat, feeling like an unstoppable force towards the end. Graphically it still holds up 13 years down the line. Overall I enjoyed the time I spent with the game.
First played this back on the Xbox and felt like replaying it. It’s just as I remembered: good, but nothing extraordinary. However, I do enjoy this kind of hack-and-slash gameplay, even if it’s definitely on the more basic side. For under €4, it’s worth it though.
This game is truly one of a kind It's the first time I've ever played this type of game and I honestly didn't expect to enjoy it this much The atmosphere, the gameplay , and the overall experience pulled me in from the very beginning Every session feels unique .. and there's always something new to discover It's one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had
The pros: The fighting system is the main highlight, particularly when chaining perfectly timed blocks and cinematic executions - think Brad Pitt as Achilles in 'Troy', real badass vibes. Also, the gladiatorial arena mode is fun, especially online co-op, and the graphics are genuinely impressive for a 2013 game. The cons: The flawed campaign storyline and wealth of cringey dialogue, comprising little historical accuracy or realism. Minimal variety of character models breaks immersion - I eventually got bored of executing the same fat guy in the same way - and the depictions of historical figures are, for the most part, rough. I experienced some frustrating glitches too, in some cases requiring checkpoint reloads. The unexpected: The gladiatorial arena mode, especially online co-op, being more enjoyable and replayable than the campaign. That said, sadly online co-op is low on player numbers, so it takes awhile to connect. The summary: For the fighting system and gladiatorial arena mode, Ryse is worth buying. It's often discounted and cheaper than chips! Though, less said about Boudica's depiction the better...
Ryse: Son of Rome was a solid experience overall. The combat stayed satisfying throughout, and the cinematic execution sequences made every battle feel brutal and impactful. It often felt like I was playing through a decent action movie, with impressive visuals and great presentation. That said, the gameplay doesn't evolve much over the course of the campaign, and it can become repetitive after a while. The story is entertaining enough, but it's fairly predictable and doesn't do anything particularly groundbreaking. If you're looking for a short, cinematic hack-and-slash game with impressive graphics and fun combat, it's definitely worth playing. Just don't expect a lot of depth or variety.
Gameplay: 7 Story: 7 Characters: 8 Sounds: 7 Graphics: 7 Level Design: 6 My Opinion: 7
Beautiful visuals that still hold up today, satisfying combat, and a cinematic story that never overstays its welcome. The gameplay can get repetitive, but for a 5–8 hour campaign, it's a great experience. Definitely worth picking up on sale.
