QTE Frontier...
The amount of QTE (quick time events) that are in this game are absolutely insane. EACH time you attack, there's a QTE and EACH time you are attacked, there's a QTE. Do you want to cast a spell? Well that requires a QTE. Want to use an ability? Yup, another QTE. Pros: #1. The art-style is good, in a cartoonish kinda way. Cons: #1. This is a (bad) console port, with NO mouse support at all. The mouse does literally nothing and can't be used anywhere. And ontop of that, the mouse cursor constantly shows whilst playing, so you have to move the mouse cursor to the side of the screen. #2. The key-bindings aren't shown. So you start the game, and have NO IDEA what to press. What is 'confirm'? What is 'cancel'? Nobody knows. There isn't even an option just to SEE what the controls are, nevermind customize them. #3. Can't customize key-bindings AT ALL. All key-bindings are hard-bound. #4. No tutorial to speak of. The QTE system isn't explained, death isn't explained, the level-up system isn't explained and the weapon upgrade system isn't explained either. #5. There's no legend for the map. So you've got no idea what the icons on the map mean #6. No exclusive fullscreen option, and only 3 resolution options, with 1080p being the highest resolution possible. #7. No framerate limit or V-sync options at all If I weren't so lazy, then I'd refund this game... seriously... and I f#cking NEVER refund games. That's how much I didn't enjoy this game. If you're looking for a good 'Slay the Spire' game, then just play Slay the Spire, or Divinity Chronicles, or Neoverse.... anything but this game.
Fun concept but needs some QoL adjustments like being able to see current stats while shopping for gear. Also Towns should recover fully whichever stat you choose. 30% felt like a slap to the face once I reached one. And I wish perfectly blocking attacks reduced the damage further.
I have 1 hour+ in this game and i refunded it. Simple reason: This game makes nearly everything wrong in his genre. First of all is the controls which goes only with controller or keyboard and you only need 2 buttons to go back and forth and some keys for moving the "cursor". Gameplay is pretty annoying, because for every attack or skill you need to press a button in the right time and tactic or strategy is not really given. You are limited in health, mana and items, which you get maybe 1-2 times in a chapter. Leveling your characters is not great and i tell you why: First you need to win fights to get experience (dead people don't get exp i think, couldn't confirm), after getting enough experience you get your level up and you can choose stats (health, mana, defense or attack) or you get only a skill (random or maybe it is fixed). To the map: It is like in the pictures.. you choose a path or switch between them if you can cross it and you go through. You have 3 characters (Monk/Priest, Warrior and a mage) in the beginning and more to unlock. Settings are nearly nonexistent, it is like a browsergame oder mobile game. (resolution, vsync, sound..) About 5 options to change. Sound/music: It's okay but nothing exiting or special. There is a lot of more game kinda like this and they make it ten times better. The game itself needs some fine tuning and more support for higher resolutions.
Much like any roguelite you'll play first few runs always rough till you unlock some of the perks/upgrades to make each run easier. Once you unlock some of these perks/upgrade you'll have a semi smooth run and beat the game for first time. Only a few characters to unlock, each with it advantage and disadvantage when comes to each combat scenario, but that's the fun of it to over come each scenario. Yes the combat is QTE press (A) (using xbox controller) at right now to trigger a secondary attack when fighting and (A) to reduce damage taken in combat but adds little flavor to the combat instead of just watching your characters swing, dodge or block automatic. Few different enemies and bosses to fight with there own attack patterns, most enemies are simplistic. Overall pretty fun game it around 5.5/10 for me, nothing to new to table but good experience for those who enjoy pretty alright roguelite game.
this game is really fun. IDK what the other reviews are talking about. There is a tutorial that explains all the controls, and once you had one run through you will fully understand all game mechanics. The first play through was kinda frustrating, however afterwards things got easier. Im looking forward to updates!!!
It feels like a bad port. The controls are all over the place and controller doesnt seem to work on some screens at all. The combat is slow and boring, you have 1 attack or skill thats it, with everything having additional button presses for what seems like no real reason. The attacks arent given different ways to attack and methods to defend, outside of a single skill, the rest are all just hit the button again. Woo. I honestly refunded because it was all just so below average.
Fun little game, wish it had a bit more content, but it's definitely enjoyable.
Royal Frontier is a chill turn-based RPG with rogue-like elements and a degree of difficulty where you form a party of heroes to traverse the lands and reach the far off place of New Haven. The story does the job of giving the player a long-term objective, but isn't anything special to write home about. Along the way you'll encounter certain events in the rogue-like map nodes that will change up each run so they never play the same, but each encounter is pretty static. Each encounter will have a variety of enemies thrown in who are there ultimately to make your run end. It becomes a battle of attrition unless you play it smart. The controls are somewhat confusing, but I don't think it's anything to angry about. Keyboard controls don't make use of the mouse at all beyond the initial menu, so it's pretty much arrow keys and enter/spacebar. Each combat action has a quick time event where you either need to mash space/enter or press it at a particular time to increase your damage output or reduce damage taken from incoming attacks. One thing I'll say about the controls is that it's quite simple that anyone can pick up the game and have a few rounds without feeling like they should need a walkthrough. It's accessible, which I think is the point. For the asking price of $9.95 AUD, it's a solid time-killer. But I do feel that it is the type of game that would be better on mobile platforms such as iOS or Android. If they were to retain the current control scheme and adapt it for touch screen devices, and adjust the pricing accordingly to entice mobile gamers to buy. In summary, Royal Frontier is a solid time killer. Perhaps install it on a work PC for when you've nothing to do.
