About
Take charge of your own fantasy gladiator team! This classic turn-based strategy game combines RPG elements, gladiator management, and tactical combat.
Managing your gladiator team is challenging and requires you to:
Hire new gladiators.
Equip them with weapons, armor and spells.
Scout your opponent teams.
Crush your competitors in turn-based battles (if you are able to win matches).
Invent innovative explanations for your losses (if you're unable to win matches – "The sun was in my gladiator's eyes!" is always a classic).
Earn money from ticket revenues and win bonuses.
Pay your gladiators' salaries.
Watch your favorite gladiators improve their skills and attributes, gain fame and victories, and ultimately retire from gladiator fights.
Strive for the ultimate goal: the League Championship of Runerock.
Each gladiator is almost as unique as a snowflake, with stats that include:
Name (of course!).
Age (old gladiators are liberated from gladiator battles, so this is quite important).
Character class (there are 36 different classes in the game, for example, the mighty Minotaur, the smart Sorceress, the stout Stoneman, and of course, the barbaric Barbarian).
Attributes (strength, dexterity, mana, health).
Set of melee and missile weapon skills.
Spell skills.
Miscellaneous skills like dodge and magic resistance.
Morale (nobody likes losses or other mishaps).
Most gladiators' stats can and will improve during their careers!
To all the Finnish fans of the "Areena" games: Runerock Arena is a game by the original creator, Seppo Suorsa.

I've enjoyed the Areena franchise ever since I was a wee lad (Areena 4 being my favorite and most nostalgic one). Even to this day, me and my friends play our favorites from the franchise here and there. So naturally, the moment I found out that the franchise is getting an actual brand new commercial release on Steam, I had to spread the word and buy it immediately! So far, the game is just as I remember the franchise to be. You play the role of a manager in a medieval fantasy setting, tasked with assembling a mighty team of gladiators to defeat all opposition and climbing up the ranks to win it all! It is a pretty minimalistic game, all things considered. Not a lot of shiny animations at all, no hyper realistic environments to lose yourself into. Its just very briefly animated bunches of sprites representing your gladiators, who you smash into enemy team like you would dolls as a kid. You can have up to 6 combatants on the arena at once, and a maximum of 9 in the entire team. Every gladiator has their individual stats based on their race, and then within that race the stats are randomized. Then every gladiator are between 20 to 35 years old, and once a gladiator reaches age 36, they retire and thus cannot be used for combat anymore (though you get refunded for all the gear they were wearing. Not for spells tho). Every year of the game is split into 12 months, split between League matches and Cup matches. Winning League matches increases your win score within the Division, scoring highest lets you proceed to the next Division. Cup matches are tournaments where your opponents are randomly selected from any division (Usually the Division 1 teams win these, though there are times when even lower ones can luck out and score a victory). Winning the entire Cup gives you a huge money boost. The last 2 months of the year are Winter Break with no matches, and then once the year ends, the scores are tallied and teams are shuffled based on their score. Lowest scoring team falls to lower Division, highest scoring proceeds to the higher one. Winning Division 1 effectively wins the game, though you can still keep playing for however long you like. Also, the KO's are tallied and if you have the highest KO'ing gladiator, you get a money boost. It is a very simple and straightforward game on the surface, but there's a surprising amount of depth in there. A Gladiator's performance depends on a lot of factors, not just on the quality of their equipment. Usually on easier difficulties you can win by just bum rushing the enemy with strongest gear, but on higher difficulties you'll have to start strategizing and utilizing some of the spells in the game, like forcing enemy to skip turns, freezing their melee fighters in place, or buffing your own gladiators. If you've played the previous entry in the franchise, Arena 8 (only on mobile), you might see some similarities here. In fact, based on my experience thus far from the Demo and playing the release, this is basically Arena 8 with improved graphics and playable on an actual proper gaming platform. I dont see any new features so far. Like Arena 8 as well, this game is purely Single Player (at the moment of writing this review, at least. It is a very simple, very humble game. But that's what the franchise has always been. Just simple fun that you fire up, play a few rounds of before work, or during a break, etc. So with that in mind, I do think i've got my money's worth here. I recommend the game, but this is absolutely coming with tons of nostalgia for the franchise. If you're brand new to the series, it might be bit offputting due to the simple looks. Its not a gaming revolution, but nobody wanted it to be, or frankly should've expected it to. Its just one guy working on his passion project for the past three decades, and i'm all here for it. TL;DR: Simple graphics, simple gameplay loop. Surprising depth. Do recommend, with heavy amounts of nostalgia for the series. 8/10

One of the Finnish gaming OGs is back, and it's marvelous. Runs flawlessly with Proton on Linux. And remember, kids: never anger the Board with your excuses.
It's been a long while since I received the freeware version of Areena 4 alongside a lot of other freeware and demo games in a disc alongside the Pelit magazine when I was a kid. I did put copious amount of hours into Areenas 4 and 5 (also at least trying out every Areena release since Areena 2). My first impressions of Runerock Arena are overwhelmingly positive. The game looks a lot more polished and modern than the OG titles while maintaining the core gameplay that makes it a relaxing and nostalgic experience for me. Having double the starting income of the OG games certainly makes early game a lot simpler. At least on easy difficulty which I chose for the first game in Runerock Arena. It has a lot of the feel of Areena 4 with the race/class diversity of Areena 5 making it a very lovely Areena experience. There are some features the older titles had I'm missing, such as the specialized arrows of Areena 3, being able to hold P (for pikakierros or quick round) until the enemy team dissipates into crimson mist and unlimited trainings per month to mention a few. I do hope to see some of these features in a future update. ^^ My main suggestion for improvements based is adding customizable keybindings. I'm fairly certain that should be possible within the game engine. One of the few downsides are the achievements. Locking a few behind specific difficulty settings is like saying: "Here, have achievements but we don't want any casual gamer to actually be able to achieve them all." If you wanna ramp up the difficulty, maybe put winning championship or cup with a specific number of gladiators (both can be even done with just the one, at least on lower difficulties). Or add more race/class specific achievements like that one with the rabbit to give us incentive to break our typical teamups and try new ones. Just please don't difficulty lock them like that. Considering the price tag, pretty much anyone can afford to grab the title and enjoy the game, whether for nostalgia or love of gladiator management games. I can highly recommend the game!
I've been playing and I have been a fan of the Arena series for years. This Runerock Arena carries the torch for the series magnificently. The game has been improved in almost every way (although, reindeer would have been nice to see ;))
It feels like I have Regained piece of childhood. As long I have owned computer there has always been Arena game installed. Big red hit markers still tickle my brain such unique way. Easily worth tenner.
For years I have been wishing for am updated English-language version of Gladiator Manager, a completely addictive shareware game from 20+ years ago... Well here it is! The gameplay loop is nearly identical, keeping everything that made the original games so much fun. No flashy graphics or cutscenes needed, this is rock-solid game mechanics honed over the years.
Best gladiator simulator ever...
I have spent countless hours on older versions of Areena. It is a timeless classic and you should give it a go if you like tactical fantasy games. You manage a team of gladiators and you start your career at the bottom of the league. You try to get promoted while hiring new grladiators and upgrade their weapons and armors. For maximum fun play with friends!

This game has a long history beginning from the 1990's. It's a very straightforward turn-based arena combat game with a management layer for hiring and equipping etc. There's a lot of different races and a good variety of equipment and spells. Skills, including spellcasting skills, improve with use. So you can either hire young cheap gladiators and see them improve (and guide them in a direction you want), or if you have the money, hire superstars (but they age and retire at some point). In Finland, it's a cult classic both because it's a good game and also because of hilarious tongue-in-cheek descriptions for everything. I switched the language to English for a moment, and it's the same descriptions, only slightly less unique and flashy writing style.
