Deck Adventurers - Origins is a turn-based deckbuilder. While it seems like a low-quality indie game (Cheap price, almost no reviews), it certainly is NOT a bad game. I never heard of the game nor the dev before. I got the game through steams curator connect program and that's when I first saw it. I think it looked interesting enough to try it out and it was certainly worth it.
Story
The story is as generic as it could be. Not really worth talking about. It's not bad, don't get me wrong but the strength of the game lies in the battle mechanics. That is where the fun is hidden.
Basics
It starts slow. You play as Tasha with six cards equipped. 3 for attacking, 3 for defending. The first mission is the tutorial basically (Over the next missions you'll learn a few new things but more to it later). Every turn you can play two cards but you're just able to attack ONE time per turn. You can either play a defend card then OR make your attack stronger. You can sacrifice one attack card to gain a bonus on your next attack. You can see the enemies' actions hovering over their heads, so you can plan your turn accordingly. A mission is one to three fights long. After every fight, you'll get a reward. Either an upgrade for your card, one for your character, or a new card.
Customizing cards
There are several different options to choose between. Upgrade the basic attack or defense stat or add one of several special abilities to that card. If you get an upgrade for your character, you can raise his HP, basic att, or def stat. Cards for attacking have two different stats. One is the basic attack, the second tells you how much your attack increases if you sacrifice the card. Later in the game, more stats and abilities join your cards roster. (like bleed, counter, pierce, fire mage, burn, etc.). Talking about later, this is how the game is designed: You'll learn new things pretty slow. After a few missions, you'll get one new card (your seventh card), then you'll play with a new character. This one has a totally different way to play the game. His basic attacks are weak but he can cast fire mage. Sacrificing a card to your pile deck will grant you fire mage which will make your basic attack to a fire mage. Attacking enemies will not just damage them but also give them a fire counter which goes up every time you damage them with fire. The higher their fire stat is, the more fire damage you'll do.
Easy or challenging?
Having a max deck of nine cards per character seems like this is a very shallow game on a tactical level but it's not. Combine customizing and upgrading cards with special abilities and the tactical turn-based fights and it gets pretty tough. The game is designed to be hard. The dev added an easy mode for you to play but if you want a challenge, select hard.
Balance
Sometimes the game feels a bit unbalanced on hard because there is no way to grind and enemies can be strong. You'll have to live with what you got before and try again and again and again. For some, this can be frustrating, for others this is where it gets fun. I am more of the second person IF I think I have a chance to win. I did not encounter a fight where I did not have that feeling in my three hours of playtime. Still, for some this is frustrating. If you're one of them, select easy mode or just try it out.
The Dev
The game is not early access but the dev seems to be open about changes. I read on the steam forums that people found the game too hard. He then immediately added an easy mode. Post your suggestions there. He seems like he cares and since the game isn't that popular yet, it's easier to get heard. If you're reading this: Add more mechanics early in your next game (Sequel?) and don't wait several missions to do so.
Conclusion
Deck Adventurers - Origins is fun. Customizing cards and trying different strategies out is where the fun is hidden. Although it starts pretty slow, it will get hard down the line. It's addictive trying to beat the enemy over and over again. It's cheap and if you're into deckbuilder, you should definitely give it a try!
Little adventure
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2825431334
STORY
Two heroes travel the world. At some point, their paths will cross.
GAMEPLAY
The gameplay is turn-based card battles. The combat system is quite interesting. You can play two cards per turn or take two other actions. We attack, apply shields, buffs and debuffs. We go through the tests one by one. As you advance, the cards and the power of the heroes become stronger. There are a lot of types of enemies and they present surprises. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2825431530 Consider the pros and cons of the game, sum up.
PROS:
+ Nice pixel graphics. + Excellent music and soundtrack. + Good combat system. + Many types of cards and their enhancements. + Many kinds of enemies.
CONS:
- Not detected. The game is fully consistent with the description.
CONCLUSIONS
Nice little game. Fans of card and turn-based battles may like it. This one was tough for me to review. On the one hand, I had a lot of fun in the early game customizing my deck and trying out strategies. I should mention I started on Hard mode from the beginning, which was apparently the default mode when it was first released. This will be relevant throughout the rest of the review. But then the fun basically stops once you hit the Fire Elemental as Tasha (I can't remember the exact level but it's around 11 out of 24). At that point, the game becomes more of a puzzle than a card game. You're basically forced into specific strategies because enemies will be immune to most of the options available to a specific character. For instance, Undead are immune to Weaken and Bleed... so there's no point in taking those as the warrior anymore. It'd be fine if enemies had immunities sprinkled throughout the game to keep fights interesting, but once you hit that chapter I mentioned, virtually every single enemy will be immune to certain deck archetypes, forcing you down a particular path for each level. Oh, and there is no way to see this information beforehand, so expect to make a lot of blind decisions, then quitting a fight so that you can prepare properly. This problem is compounded further when the latter half of the game makes you rely on AI teammates. You can only use very specific defensive moves to give them protection against attacks, which makes later fights more frustrating than tactically interesting. If I know the enemy is going to attack my teammate, but I don't have any cards to protect them, what good does it do? Future fights become super reliant on RNG, because you pray the enemy will target you so your idiot teammate doesn't die. I really hope they change this in the sequel, because I don't want to waste time on RNG in a game that should have otherwise been focused on my decisions. There's already enough RNG with the deck, don't compound it further with random targeting and an inability to help my teammates out. Yes, I know you can heal them (with moves that provide a limited amount of healing per battle... -_-) and as Berem I could provide the Fire Shield to Tasha, but later fights make this far more of an RNG crisis than it should be. The difficulty should come from me learning from my mistakes, but Tasha getting targeted 8 times in a row by enemies is not my mistake, that's just ♥♥♥♥ luck. This is even worse in the final fight, where you're forced to fight 4 consecutive battles without any kind of checkpoint system. And each fight takes quite a while compared to the rest of the game. Finally, I'd really appreciate it if the dev could figure out a way to make enemies interesting without every single one having some kind of "Gets +1 Attack each turn of the game" mechanic. They all do it in a different way, but come on, there has to be something else you can do instead. So, that's a lot of complaining to still recommend the game. Why? Because it's an indie dev and the first half is a lot of fun. There's some really cool ideas in here and I can't deny the joy I felt from getting to customize my deck. If the second half was its own game though, I'd thumbs down it in a heartbeat, though. I hope the dev has learned their lessons from this iteration, because while I'm still somewhat interested in the sequel, that enthusiasm has waned considerably from the first time I booted this up. I guess we'll see what happens.
Pixel deckbuilding + change upgrades + RPG elements = Simple yet complex adventure. Pick between 3 card upgrades for each level to help you power up. 2 action points per turn so make the most of it. Okay, so I wanted to try this one out quickly because I was concerned that it somehow only has one legitimate review and it looked very interesting. To no great surprise, it is really good! It has a great pixel and old school music aesthetic combined with a legitimately interesting deck building progression that gives you upgrade paths and cards with multiple use options on them. For this low price, this one is a steal. Give it a shot!

Considering its size, it packs a solid punch. So, the gameplay: You are a hero that is tasked to overcome evil. You go unto linear missions each consisting of a few encounters. In those encounters you fight several enemies with special abilities that form a sort of puzzle of deciding who to prioritizes first. In battles you have exactly two actions per turn which you can use to play or discard a card to get a special bonus. In addition, you can attack only once per turn so it has to count. After each battle you are able to upgrade a card, enhancing some of its abilities. Counterintuitively, comparing to other similar games, these rough restrictions on actions actually make the game fun. Each combat feels very much like a combat focused puzzle where every action, every card played and upgrade taken can have a minor but additive impact that becomes apparent after a few rounds. After a certain point in the game, you get to play with another character that plays a bit differently and as the story progresses the game will have you swap between characters, each with their own special encounters.
The positive
+ Challenging puzzle like combat. Combat encounters feel very tactical, despite there not being a huge amount of decisions to make. How you build your deck and manage upgrades, as well as which enemy to prioritize will be the determining factor in difficult fights.
The negative
- Restarting battles can be annoying. Some encounters can be very difficult and only after you have seen all of the enemies can you figure out the winning upgrade combination to win. Sometimes, it takes even more time which can be annoying especially when some encounters can take a fair bit of time to do perfectly, only to get killed on the second one.
Conclusion:
Tightly packed but well done game, that is more of a puzzle than a traditional deckbuilder. Those looking for a challenge won't be disappointed.
Really cool deck management! Demanding but rewarding
Far too difficult to the point you need to rely on luck and grind the same part until you eventually win.
i did receive this game for free because i do enjoy these sort of games, it seems basic (i don't use that in a bad way) simple, the art style i like, i defo would recommend this game, and i fully intend to go back and complete this bad boy 😎 here is my first impressions video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18qL3SBdLDo like alwys this is not a review.
