Today, after starting a new save this weekend, I finally beat Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song. I bought it in 2023 for the Switch, got to the final boss, couldn't beat him, and gave up. But today I did it. I really think I'll remember it as one of my favorite games, and yet I don't think I could recommend it to anyone unless I know for a fact they'd be comfortable with what is effectively a 20+ hour puzzle box. Because that's what this game was. You get to pick between 8 characters with virtually no idea who any of them are, "tutorials" are walls of text that randomly pop up only after you encounter the new mechanic (or presented by these little twerps that call you a rookie in every town no matter how late in the game you are), the game literally tells you to keep multiple saves in case you mess up (because you can mess up BAD), the whole game has a "time" limit, there is no main quest until the very end of the game so you're flying by the seat of your pants and holding on by the skin of your teeth trying to figure out what the heck is going on, and that final boss was a bastard. It's a game where the main character is a plaything of the gods strung along by fate and the whims of you the player (I'm not being philosophical on that one. The game asks you your real name and sex for story reasons). But God knows it felt good to finally beat it. It's a gorgeous game, serene even. Yet it's still comfortable punching you in the gut and telling you that you failed so badly that you should probably start a new save. There's even a section in your quest log for failed quests. Even then, I only beat the game as one of the 8 playable characters. Minstrel Song is completely comfortable being itself and the main mind behind the franchise doesn't beat around the bush when he talks about his games in interviews. The whole SaGa franchise is like this. These games are weird and you may love one game in the franchise only to hate the next. But if this is your thing, you're not going to get the SaGa experience from any other gaming franchise. For what it's worth, I hope you reading this love this game the way I did.
One of my favorite non-linear JRPGs!
tl;dr If you're willing to jump down a deep rabbit hole of research, preparation, and understanding, this game is incredibly good, but I assume most people aren't these days. I love this game, and had a phenomenal experience with it, but getting that experience required innumerable resources from outside the game. I started with the original PS2 game manual, branched out to various online guides including the ones on Steam, and even called up a friend from elementary school who had played it before. Wild stuff. This is very much a game for which you need to do research to even get a base level understanding of its systems, so if that's not your thing, I advise against it. Once you have a good grasp on it, though, this game grabs back and doesn't let go. It's a wildly addicting JRPG that doesn't pull that off using "number-go-up" methods, but through genuinely interesting player choices on the macro and micro level. Every player will have a different experience, even when choosing the same starting character and going for the same ending, and I think that's beautiful. My 90(~20 not counted by Steam since I had no internet, I guess) hours represents 3(.5) full playthroughs(once on each "progression speed" and a failed attempt) where I got each of the three ending quests. Didn't fight the secret ultimate final boss(yet), because that would require another playthrough(or 2) of preparation. I'm willing to, but just don't have the time yet. My first attempted playthrough ended in failure after ~10 hours. It wasn't totally unwinnable, as I've learned, but the steps to get myself out of that mess would've required another 5-10 hours of misery, and I preferred to just start over. Preparation and understanding are important.
We need Chinese!!!!
Okay, in less than 20 hours of blind playtrough the game managed to kick my ass by making me dig my own grave. Wasn't expecting this from the last Final Fantasy gaiden serie I'vent played yet.
