Just release the original amiga version of speedball 2 brutal deluxe. It was perfect in every way. This is not!
Youngsters will look at this and say ' What's this ♥♥♥♥♥ ' but as a teen in the early 90's this was a top dollar game and I love it to this day........
Speedball 2 HD is a modern reinterpretation of one of the most iconic and aggressive sports games of the early 1990s, aiming to preserve the spirit of the original while presenting it through a contemporary lens. Developed by Bitmap Brothers in collaboration with Vivid Games and published by Rebellion, this HD edition revisits the brutal, cyberpunk-infused world of Speedball, a violent future sport that blends elements of handball, hockey, and arcade brawling into a fast-paced, enclosed-arena spectacle. The premise remains as striking today as it was decades ago: victory is achieved not only by scoring goals, but by dominating the opposition through sheer force, tactical aggression, and relentless momentum. At its core, Speedball 2 HD is built around speed, impact, and controlled chaos. Matches unfold on compact pitches surrounded by steel walls, forcing constant engagement and leaving no room for passive play. Players must master passing, shooting, tackling, and positioning while simultaneously exploiting the arena itself, using bumpers, bonus targets, and ricochets to gain an edge. Scoring is multifaceted, rewarding not just clean goals but also successful hits, knockdowns, and the activation of score multipliers. This layered scoring system ensures that every second of play matters and that matches remain tense and dynamic until the final whistle. One of the defining elements of the experience is its progression system, which adds strategic depth beyond the immediate action. Teams are composed of individual players with distinct attributes, and over time they can be upgraded, transferred, or replaced to better suit your preferred playstyle. Career mode allows players to guide a team through a full league structure, earning money from victories and sponsorships, investing in player improvements, and climbing toward dominance in the Intergalactic Champions League. This management layer gives long-term context to the matches, encouraging careful planning rather than relying purely on reflexes. Visually, Speedball 2 HD attempts to modernize the stark, industrial aesthetic of the original with higher-resolution graphics, new arenas, and updated animations. While the presentation is cleaner and more detailed, it has been a point of contention among long-time fans. Some appreciate the sharper visuals and expanded content, while others feel that the HD style softens the gritty, hard-edged identity that defined the classic. The futuristic arenas still convey a sense of brutality and spectacle, but the remake’s art direction occasionally feels less cohesive than its source material. The sound design and music continue to emphasize intensity, reinforcing the game’s high-energy atmosphere. The soundtrack leans into electronic and industrial tones that suit the cyberpunk setting, while sound effects give weight to tackles, collisions, and goals. These audio elements play an important role in maintaining immersion, especially during heated exchanges where the screen is filled with movement and impact. Despite its strengths, Speedball 2 HD is not without shortcomings. Controls can feel less precise than expected for a game that relies so heavily on speed and responsiveness, and AI behavior can be inconsistent, sometimes lacking the aggression or tactical awareness needed to sustain challenge over extended play. Additionally, the absence of robust online multiplayer limits the game’s longevity in a modern context, as much of its appeal lies in competitive play against other human opponents. Nevertheless, the game retains a strong sense of identity and delivers a distinctive arcade sports experience that few modern titles attempt to replicate. It thrives in short, intense sessions, where its blend of violence and sport shines brightest, and local multiplayer matches capture the spirit of rivalry and immediacy that made the original so memorable. For newcomers, it offers a glimpse into a unique corner of gaming history; for veterans, it provides a familiar but altered take on a beloved classic. Ultimately, Speedball 2 HD stands as an ambitious but uneven revival. It succeeds in preserving the core concept that made Speedball 2 legendary—fast, brutal, and unapologetically arcade-focused—while struggling at times to balance nostalgia with modernization. While it may not replace the original in the hearts of purists, it remains a compelling and energetic sports-action hybrid that continues to stand apart from conventional sports games, delivering a brand of futuristic competition that is as ruthless as it is distinctive. Rating: 6/10
The 8 Core Player Attributes * SPD (Speed): Controls movement velocity, slide-tackle reach, and jump distance. Essential for recovering loose balls quickly. * POW (Power): Dictates tackle impact. Higher power inflicts severe damage to opponents' health meters, accelerating player injuries. * STA (Stamina): Serves as the primary defense against Power. High stamina mitigates health loss when tackled and keeps stats from decaying mid-match. * INT (Intelligence): Governs AI prediction, pass interception, and reaction time. High IQ players position themselves smarter when off-screen. * ATT (Attack): Dictates the raw success rate of dispossessing an opponent during a tackle or punch. * DEF (Defence): Determines how well a player resists incoming tackles, allowing them to retain ball possession. * THR (Throwing): Increases maximum ball throw distance and enhances the accuracy of curved throws. * AGR (Aggression): Controls autonomous behavior. Highly aggressive AI-controlled teammates actively seek out and attack nearby opponents. Optimal Stat Allocation by Position You should allocate gym cash to optimize specific positions rather than upgrading the team uniformly: | Position | Primary Attributes | Tactical Purpose | | Goalkeeper | INT, DEF, THR | Maximizes reaction saves, resists close-range tackles, and clears the ball deeply. | | Defenders | POW, DEF, ATT | Acts as a physical wall to crush attackers and secure loose balls. | | Midfielders | SPD, THR, INT | Rapidly transitions play, intercepts passes, and loops the score multipliers. | | Forwards / Wingers | SPD, POW, AGR | Rapidly closes in on the goal and knocks out opposing defenders. | Stat-Maxing Strategy: The "Brawler" Meta The most effective way to win in higher league tiers is to abuse the injury point system. Injuring an opponent awards 10 points—the exact same value as scoring a goal. 1. Target the opposing team's weakest substitutions first. 2. Maximize POW and AGR on your midfielders and forwards. 3. Repeatedly tackle players immediately after they catch a pass to systematically drain their health bars. 4. Forcing an opponent to run out of substitutes completely leaves positions entirely vacant, making it trivial to rack up goals uncontested. GOALKEEPER It is essential to have a strong 'keeper, he must be able to win any head-to- head tackles, losing almost certainly guarantees the opposition a goal. Intelligence is also important. A goalie with a high IQ is more likely to go after rogue balls or intercept passes. He also needs to be able to clear the ball effectively, so increasing his passing skills. DEFENCE A powerful defence stems from its ability to block. Concentrate on boosting your defender's strength, power and passing. Don't hesitate once a defender has the ball; pass it up field straight away. MIDFIELD The midfield's there simply to pass the ball to the attackers so build up their speed and passing ability. Midfielders are also useful for operating the score multiplier to increase points. WINGERS Next to the centre-forward the winger are the most important players. Possessing high strength, aggression and intelligence, your wingers will concentrate on occupying the opposition goalkeeper and defence, allowing the forward to get a good scoring position. CENTRE FORWARD The centre-forward is the anchor man of the team. His role is to win possession at kick off, do the bulk of the team's running and, most importantly, score goals. Strength, speed and a good passing ability are a must. This must be the first player you build up. SUBS Substitutes are usually overlooked when a team is being built up, which is a mistake. The centre-forward is generally the first player to be injured in a match, so he needs to be replaced by someone with almost equal skill.

For less than £2 you can't go wrong with this old school Amiga fun... You don't always need 3D... Why did we never get a Speedball 3!?
a bit to slow compare to the original, its more like slowball 2. they should run faster so u can feel the speed and get a bit more action in the match. but its still fun and its much longer seasons with cups and champions league the AI players is running around like stupid chickens and not at all in position like in the old origin. Plus it chrashes often and log u out Overall absolutely not the same feeling as the original...im dissapointed
Pretty much impossible to get working with gamepad controls. Steam achievements also don't work.
Speedball 2 HD on Steam is a glorious comeback for fans of the Bitmap Brothers and 1980s gaming: true to the original, but with a solid graphical overhaul that makes it modern, playable, and visually appealing. Speedball 2 HD is the digital reincarnation of a cult classic, originally released in 1990 on the Commodore Amiga and C64. If you loved Bitmap Brothers titles, this is a nostalgic dive into a dystopian sports future where brutal contact and fast-paced action rule the arena. The game retains the soul of the original, while offering updated visuals that, although not cutting-edge, are smooth and enjoyable, keeping the gameplay fluid and engaging. Sound effects are a standout feature: crowd chants, metallic impacts, and in-game collisions create a rich, immersive atmosphere. The managerial system is also well-designed, allowing you to manage your team, buy players, and climb the rankings with a good dose of strategy. That said, there’s room for improvement. It would have been great to customize players with visual elements like armor or masks, adding a personal and futuristic touch to the teams. Also, the player market tends to stagnate: once you’ve bought the strongest players, no new ones appear, and you can’t make offers for athletes from other teams, which limits the depth of the management experience. In short, Speedball 2 HD is a successful tribute to a golden age of gaming, perfect for those who lived through the Amiga and C64 era, and for anyone looking to discover a bold arcade sports title. A classic worth rediscovering, with room to evolve even further.
