The gameplay is addictive, glimmering techniques is incredibly satisfying and the combat balances difficulty and creativity incredibly well. Party building creates so much freedom. The world is vast with tons of loot to obtain, characters to recruit, dungeons to raid and secrets to be uncovered. It's a SaGa game through and through. The series isn't for everybody, it can be incredibly unwieldy at times. But it's an experience worth seeing through to the end and overcoming its obstacles.

omancing SaGa 3™ is a fascinating relic of the golden age of JRPGs, reintroduced to a modern audience through its long-awaited official localization and HD remaster. Originally released in 1995 for the Super Famicom in Japan, this entry in Square Enix's unconventional SaGa series remained a hidden gem to Western audiences until its global release in 2019. With a focus on non-linear storytelling, open-ended exploration, and experimental mechanics that break from the mold of its more famous RPG siblings like Final Fantasy, Romancing SaGa 3 stands as a bold, sometimes baffling, but ultimately rewarding experience for those willing to engage with its quirks. At its core, Romancing SaGa 3 is defined by its open structure. Right from the outset, players are given a choice of eight protagonists, each with their own background, starting location, and narrative threads. This choice fundamentally shapes the early hours of the game and offers unique scenes and character interactions, encouraging multiple playthroughs. However, the game’s overarching narrative—the story of the “Rise of Morastrum,” a recurring celestial event that threatens to destroy the world every 300 years—unfolds regardless of your choice. It’s a premise steeped in mystery and fantasy, one that gradually reveals itself as you explore the interconnected regions of the world and uncover fragments of lore and character arcs. Unlike many JRPGs of its time, Romancing SaGa 3 avoids a rigid, linear path. Instead, it offers a semi-open world structure that lets players choose which quests to tackle, which towns to explore, and which characters to recruit. This freedom is both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, it fosters a real sense of adventure—you’re genuinely discovering the world without being led by the hand. On the other, it can be disorienting, especially without a quest log or clear indicators for where to go next. This design philosophy reflects the SaGa series’ commitment to player agency, but it also demands patience and a willingness to get lost, make mistakes, and slowly piece things together. The game’s battle system is similarly unconventional. It uses a turn-based format, but it introduces several unique mechanics, including the “Sparking” system, where characters can spontaneously learn new techniques mid-battle based on the weapons they’re using. There’s also the use of formations, which give bonuses depending on your party arrangement, and a variety of weapon types and magic schools that allow for deep customization. Rather than leveling up in the traditional sense, characters improve individual stats through use, and abilities are tied to specific weapons or schools of magic. This creates a more organic, if unpredictable, growth system. It can be frustrating when your characters don’t seem to progress as expected, but it also gives the combat a sense of dynamism and discovery rarely seen in its contemporaries. Graphically, the HD remaster of Romancing SaGa 3 is faithful to the original while enhancing it with cleaner sprites, redrawn character portraits, and modern UI elements. It maintains the charm of its 16-bit roots while smoothing out the rough edges, and it runs beautifully on modern platforms. The game’s art design shines through in its varied environments—sprawling cities, haunted forests, sun-scorched deserts—each one painted with a sense of style that feels both classic and distinct. Kenji Ito’s musical score remains one of the game’s strongest assets, with a sweeping range of compositions that enhance everything from tense boss fights to quiet moments in forgotten towns. That said, the game is not without its flaws. Its age shows in its pacing, UI navigation, and sometimes cryptic progression. Players used to modern conveniences like fast travel, quest markers, and robust tutorials may find the experience unintuitive at times. The dialogue, while functional, can be stilted and sparse, especially by modern storytelling standards. However, these elements are part of the game’s DNA—they reflect the design ethos of mid-90s JRPGs, where exploration and experimentation were central to the experience, and where the player was expected to read between the lines and find their own way. Despite its quirks, Romancing SaGa 3 is a genuinely special game. It refuses to conform to genre expectations, and in doing so, it offers something uniquely empowering to the player. Every choice you make—from your protagonist, to your allies, to the quests you pursue—has the potential to shape your journey in meaningful ways. It rewards replayability not just with new content, but with a deeper understanding of its world and systems. While it may not be for everyone, those who connect with its experimental nature will find a deep, complex, and rewarding RPG that still feels ahead of its time in many respects. For fans of classic JRPGs who are looking for something outside the mold, or for newcomers curious about the hidden corners of Square Enix’s library, Romancing SaGa 3 offers a window into a bold chapter of RPG history. It’s a game that asks you to trust it, to take your time, and to embrace its oddities. And in return, it provides an experience that is as memorable as it is unique—a lost classic finally given the spotlight it deserves. Rating: 7/10
👍
Faithful remaster of a Super Famicom game, bringing an official English localization! + Open world JRPG that lets you play it your way + Amazing soundtrack for its time + Wide variety of unique characters to recruit + Innovative battle systems for its time with the commander mode and team attacks - Mobile-like UI, 30 FPS despite OG being mostly 60 FPS (there's a WIP mod for this) - Early game can be rough until you figure the game out better and get stronger Overall this is a fine entry point to the series or the next game if you already played another. Maybe this game will get a remake like Romancing SaGa 2 later, but this version stands well on its own already, so if a SNES era open world RPG sounds interesting, definitely get this game!
