Old school games never die!
I am a huge fan of 2D isometric games, and RollerCoaster Tycoon does everything so damn well. I love the look of the interface and the pixel art going into the world and rides. The gameplay is easy to get into, but in depth enough to not get bored. While the game can get punishing if you keep making bad business decisions, it is never not fun. Even whilst you dig yourself out of a 20 thousand dollar deficit, making your park expensive to enter and maximizing profits everywhere else to try and recover, the management alone is fun, yet crossing your fingers and toes, just praying that Mr. Sawyer himself will fix your game, is even more entertaining. I installed OpenRTC2 sometime in 2024, and while a little bit of the low resolution charm is gone, the high framerate makes up for it. Recently, the developers there added Inverted coasters, meaning I can use the smallest footprint for a coaster I have ever seen and make thousands of dollars in no time at all!
This game is broken for modern systems and would need something like OpenRCT2 to run, but i didn't like the UI scaling factor of OpenRCT2 on my 2k monitor. The UI is WAY WAY too small, but you can scale it in the settings. However, it also scales the game environment and degrades the pixel quality very notably, especially when zoomed out, and there was no solution I found except to buy RollerCoaster Tycoon CLASSIC. Classic looks better on modern displays. It might not have all the fan made extras, but it's a much more authentic experience to what Chris Sawyer had initially put out with RCT1 and 2, but with better progression with the scenarios. Unless you are running retro hardware, perhaps specifically a older CRT monitor, then this and OpenRCT2 might be a good fit, but otherwise I wouldn't bother. The downgrade in pixel quality due to the scaling factor is a major put-off for me. I also am not too interested in fan made content, like extra coasters and such. I just want what I played as a kid (copy and pasted from my RCT1 review)
blast from the past, works great with OpenRTC2
My parks kill count is up to 459. Great game .... never direspect my park
I came for the roller coasters. I stayed for the tiny people screaming.
RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 is old in the best possible way. The graphics are simple, the menus feel from another era, and sometimes the pathing makes you question everything. But once you start building rides, placing food stalls, adjusting ticket prices, and designing coasters that probably should not pass any safety inspection, the game becomes very hard to stop playing. There is something very satisfying about watching a [strike]roller coaster explode[/strike] park grow from a few paths and rides into a chaotic little world full of happy guests, broken bathrooms, lost visitors, angry customers, and people throwing up near the exit of your newest coaster. The fun is not just in building the perfect park. It is in all the small disasters too. A ride breaks down, guests complain, money gets tight, your paths become a maze, and somehow fixing all of that is part of the charm.

It definitely shows its age, but the core game is still excellent. If you like theme parks, management games, or creative chaos, this is absolutely worth playing. Build the dream park. Ignore the screams. Check the maintenance crew.
Classic.
