A brutal godlike village sim that melds the god game, management, and tower defense genres! Fight off hoards of monsters at night, and expand your village in the day time. Inspired by games like Black and White, Rimworld, and Dwarf Fortress but not quite like any of them.

I love getting drunk and trying this game. I suck at it, but I keep trying.
I'm pretty sure the developer of this game enjoys the suffering of others. Basically, we have what appears to be on the surface a unique and interesting take on settlement survival with some wave/tower defense thrown in. However after trying and failing to keep one village alive for even 2 seasons, I have the absolute opinion that what this game really is, is a thinly veiled gacha game in which, even if you do everything right, build everything in the perfect order, place all the buildings in the perfect spots, you still will likely lose because A: you haven't suffered enough to open enough "god experience" chests to boost enough stats, and B: the 'random' events seem to absolutely favor causing you the most suffering possible. There's not nearly enough margin for the player to express any level of experimentation or creativity in building or defending. Basically, if you don't do everything just right - you doom yourself - often many days before you are even aware of it. Then you get to decide if you are going to spend the next hour slowly watching your village burn away because there's no possible recovery metric. The enemy just grows at a stupidly fast rate and you just die. That's it. That's the game. Personally, I'd rather go walk barefoot across a field of legos.

Fun game played quite a bit every so often. Dev has been away for a bit now, but recently stated on twitter that they are back to working on update 3, as well as their next project. The game is "finished" as in its a complete product, which may or may not be to your taste. watch some videos or other media if its current finished state is to your liking, as while the Dev has stated they are continuing to work on it, they have no obligation to as it is a finished product.
Amazing game. Mix of city builder, tower defence and rogue like. Its difficult but thats the best part. You WILL fail. But you will learn so next time you will be better as well as getting incremental upgrades. This game has some bad reviews clearly from people that only played a few hours of it. No matter how bad you are permanent upgrades will stack and you will do better and progress. In a world of generic copy paste games this stands out as a unique gem.
Unfinished and ultimately pointless. May be a good buy for someone who doesn't need any end goals and likes playing dozens of almost exactly the same, loooong game sessions. All buildings are unlocked upfront, no sense of progression at all.
I've been playing this game for a long time, and I love it. Rise to Ruins has a high difficulty curve in my opinion, and some game mechanics (pathing, figuring out city layout, building proper mazes for tower defense) add to the difficulty, but in an engaging way- it feels like one more mechanic to overcome. I love the simplicity of the graphics; the rising difficulty level; the strategies you can come up with and implement; the balance of each part of your society... I didn't expect to like this game as much as I did, but when I gave it a chance, there's been so much to figure out. It has so much more depth than you'd expect from the surface. Leveling up your spells and powers is essential, and starts to provide fantastic upgrades and benefits to your game. I love that you can do things like revive dead villagers if you're able to see their ghosts every full moon. I love that you can bless them to have nephilim children that are stronger, sturdier, more powerful. There are so many little things in this game- the dogs, the treasures, the ability to aid your citizens in real time... Rise to Ruins will always be a game I come back to. MY ONLY REGRET? I PUT 250 HOURS IN BEFORE ACHIEVEMENTS!!
A fun game, worth the money. A great city builder with tower defense I keep coming back to. However do note that development has stopped. Edit: The big (final?) patch arrived a while ago. Recommended even more
Throws you into the game with a "figure it out yourself" attitude. I gave it 8 tries before giving up. Not for me. Also the zoom level is way too close. It felt like playing at 640x480 on my 4k monitor.
Pretty good tower defence / colony sim with a stylish lack of graphics, not too simple, not too overwhelming. I rediscovered this game while organizing steam library. Now in 2024, a lot changed since I last played it in 2019 and now it became quite good. Before, you got thrown on a map without understanding much, then monsters came and whooped your ass. Somewhere along the way they added in-game hints serving as tutorial, and the latest Achievement update provides a network of goals, which also doubles as learning framework. It does it's job well, making the game more accessible without compromising challenge. BTW most trash issues come from overharvesting/overproducing, you can, and should, set limits for materials less then "all available space", especially since that all space includes some ancillary on the opposite side of the map. And don't spam harvest spell without considering storage.
