Splintered Fate is a Turtle-themed, very obviously inspired, Hades-like. Here the charm of the Olympian Gods is replaced with the charm of the ninja turtles. This time, Splinter, not April, was taken. We will help our Turtles find out what is going on and try and recover back our master. That's it. At its core, you get the repeated "escape runs", a series of four levels for your run, rooms crossing, currency collection and "boons" gathering to form your build in your run attempt. The runs here are much shorter, with a full casual run being completed in 20-30 minutes instead of the 40-50 of Hades. In terms of story, narrative, characters, atmosphere, everything that makes Hades stand out, none of that is here. You have your miniscule and dead feeling sewer hub, no interactions or npcs worth of mention, and you have your way into the sewers, that's it. In this regard, everything is absolutely passable and serving nothing but a placeholder. Where Hades was broad and deep, this game is shallow and narrow. If in Hades you were actually progressing the story on each run, here since there is basically no story, death is just a quick way to a reattempt. Repetition is structure, not expansion. But none of that matters because combat is JUST SO DAMN FUN! It gets this right from the very first run. You have the 4 turtles to choose from (and some more characters from DLCs), each with its own weapon that provides an immediate distinct combat style. The turtles themselves all share the same movement, but will have different "inspirations", which are specialized skills to each of them (even though they can be shared at some point in your build). A turtle might focus on more hits, other on more criticals, other on more specials and other in more defense. Unlike Hades, where you feel combat needs to be more methodical to make use of your weapons, traps, backstabs or reading your enemies' attack windows to dash into and commit to your attack, here you have a more arcade-ish approach. Things feel fast, chaotic, with lesser downtimes, encouraging offense and aggression over defense and caution. More enemies and projectiles will be on screen so you keep moving and hitting and with a high momentum. Each room and encounter is not something you analyse, you just power through, staying in motion on a beautiful dance. It is definitely more forgiving, you will be more running into danger than running from it, and you never feel like the game is cheating on you. You're surfing like a ninja, hit and run, running around and distributing damage. Movement feels great, attacks feel impactful, you just go with the flow! Every time you complete a room, you will be given a choice for an upgrade. There are several types of "powers" for upgrade to choose from, like Ninja, Robotic, Ooze, Astral and others that will all focus on specific types of power. Instead of choosing a new power we can choose to improve the ones we have. We can also start the runs with some items that can shape some variables of the run but can also influence the likelihood of some type of powers so we can shape our build. The game also has in-game currency gained during the runs that offers ways to influence the likelihood of ways we can re-roll these choices and how likely they are to be given to us. Progression will start slow, but you will soon realize that the upgrade paths are so many and all feel so good! You will see real perceptible progression on each run, and there's so many ways to get better. More damage, more speed, more health, more critical chance, more critical damage, more special damage, more gadget damage, more hits, more dash, more duration of effects, higher effect of the inspirations, there's a lot and the percentage upgrades are real. You're not gaining 1%, you're gaining 25/20/15/10% per level. You really feel you become stronger fast and can push further every time. And you can get enough currency per run to upgrade a couple things here and there. Once you complete the game you will also have additional modifiers be offered after each room that will shift the chances against you in very creative ways besides just damage and health increase on enemies. Additinally, the game offers co-op! You can complete the game completely in teams of up to 4 players in a huge chaotic wonderful mess as usual. Public lobbies are not that populated these days but you can also enjoy local co-op! Ultimately, as a TMNT child, I really loved this game. It's probably the most distinct TMNT game of late since things like Shredder's Revenge are more of a love letter to the retro styled side-scroller games of TMNT since the early arcade days and all the way to the 16-bit console generation. I only wish there were more characters from the show, there could've been so much more added. We are obviously fighting the Foot Clan and mousers most of the time, and the game does offer "mini-bosses", but those feel underused with the roster available that could have been introduced. I'm not sure how it looks or appeals to a non-TNMT player just looking for a rogue-lite, but I can tell that this game takes the route of saying that a rogue-lite does not need to be about precision mastery and perfecting your gameplay, but instead just goes the arcade route with a gameplay loop, bets on a good flow, momentum and joyful energy, and in that aspect in absolutely delivers.
After 100% the achievements, I'll say the game is hella fun, but if you want to 100% make sure you do the lurking menace hard portal before you reach a higher level or it stops spawning. Other than that super worth it and the dlc characters are all fun and unique too. Some crazy op builds. Enemies get a bit repetitive though. If Hades is a 10 this is a solid 8.
Go Ninja Go Ninja Go ! Hades and TMNT finally meets, great game to play at work on my Deck.
started playing this remote play via a friend, quickly wanted to pick up a copy so I can progress and rank up. 66 hours later, completed and ranked up and believe the base game + dlc is worth every penny. if you have a friend and are on the fence remote play get a taste like me you'll be yearning for more. one of my fav coop games of all time, but by no means can you not play by yourself, i snuck in some time while my friends where busy to rank up :) will be coming back to defeat more foes soon, hoping there's more dlc incoming also. don't hesitate try it out you may be pleasantly surprised.
Rating down strictly because when you hit the "View DLC" button, it will not let you get back into the game unless you purchase the DLC or force-close the game. Either bad coding or targeting kids.
✅What's good: 1 - beautiful graphics 2- interesting combat mechanics ❌What's wrong: 1 - texts are quickly skipped automatically, sometimes you don't have time to read. 2 - the turtle can be heard fantastically jumping to other locations and places on the map before the battle 3 - The maps are beautiful, but there are no hidden places where you can go or just walk around to look, it would enliven the map. 4 - there is no Russian voice acting
Great coop but some ridiculous menu bugs (volume sliders) and a completely toxic 2 minute afk kick timer that cant be disabled which results in loss of all perks in current run, aka game over for you even if you rejoin you are level 1 on level 30. gg. so stupid, this is a casual friend game, timer should only exist in public games and still be a toggle-able option. SMH.
Could be great. but atm, its just not. the power fantasy of having sick builds feels super lacking when everything is a massive sponge. not fun when games damage indicators disappear either. ADD: Damage Total display on enemies, lower all enemy HP, at the end of each boss, show stats across all players (kills, damage ect) have a kill count. make last hits mater. all tmnt games have this.
