Richard and Alice are prisoners. Both their cells have a leather sofa and a state-of-the-art computer. But only Richard’s has a TV. Outside, the snow falls. It has done for some time. Elsewhere, they say, parts of the world have been rendered an inhospitable desert, the earth parched and cracked. People live in the zones now.
Ugh. Depressing pointless thing. Teaches Nihilism and Relativism. Its goy slop, stay away from this psyop.
Broken
Sadly, and I cannot believe that these games get onto the store, but the game is just a bit broken. Saves do not always save, and there is no way to bypass the intro screens later on. Developer has not responded to issues for years, not worth the trouble. A pity, because the game does work, story is interesting ,but it's abandoned and janky.
Introduction
Richard & Alice is a story-focused point and click adventure set in the post-apocalyptic world.
Pros & Cons
Pros: + Emotional story + Puzzles are simple and logical + Original post-apocalyptic setting Cons: - Slow walking speed - In-game notes are too hard to read - Technical issues
Story
The plot takes place in a world destroyed by the sudden coming of a new Ice Age. As the world became colder, people have become colder towards each other as well and the society has spiraled down into chaos. The game follows two characters, Richard, an ex-military guy serving a sentence in an underground prison. And Alice a new prisoner and a loving mother, who was sent in for murder. Who’s murder, you ask? This is one of the mysteries that the game tries to create for you. During the game, you will alternate between controlling Richard in the present and Alice in her flashbacks and eventually learn how story pieces relate to each other. Despite some predictable twists, it’s a solid story that could make your eyes wet at times. There are multiple endings that depend on very minor choices. Some of them feel more fitting than others, so your experience may vary depending on the ending you get.
Gameplay
It’s the usual point and click gameplay. You collect items and apply them to solve simple puzzles. They seem logical for the most part, and it doesn’t feel like you can get stuck on any of them. Your inventory is pretty small and there aren’t that many interactive spots. So even if you do get stuck, it’s easy to try out every possible combination. There’s one controversial thing about the gameplay though. The story has multiple endings that depend on some of the minor decisions you make while solving puzzles or talking to characters. It only changes the last bit of the story, but you have to replay almost the entire game to see it. It wouldn’t have been a big problem if the game had allowed you to skip cutscenes and make the character walk faster when double clicking on the ground, like many other games do. Yet, there’s nothing like that, so unlocking multiple endings is a chore.
Graphics & Audio
Visually, the game’s pretty bleak and looks like something made in an RPG maker. Though at times it works well to enhance the atmosphere of a cold dying world covered in snow. Sound effects and ambient music also add up nicely to that feeling. Sadly, there’s no voice acting.
Performance
Specs: AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU 8GB, 32GB RAM. Couldn’t get Steam to measure the FPS, but it seems to be around 30 judging by the laggy mouse movement. There aren’t much graphical settings apart from the resolution. You need to edit game files to get the fullscreen mode working. As for the technical problems, I got stuck two times after a dialogue, when the character just stopped reacting to clicks. Reloading the autosave fixed the problem.
Conclusion
Richard & Alice is a short story-focused game that will certainly have an emotional impact on you. However, if you do try to unlock multiple endings and collect all achievements, you will definitely get bored with it.
This is a straight garbage fire. Steam should feel bad for allowing this to be on it's platform.
This is at best a book or visual novel but not an adventure game. There is no gameplay to speak of. The graphics are bad and the story as far as I played depressing.
An adventure game with a strong premise that unfortunately is unable to deliver on its promise. The game's early world-building teases interesting locations that we never get to see or learn anything about. The dialogue writing really lets the game down, constantly drawing attention to itself with unnatural and unbelievable delivery. The narrative feels like it thinks it's more profound than it actually is. The point-and-click gameplay is fine, but offers so few surprises that there's very little added to the experience by actually playing it versus watching a "let's play" on YouTube. Perhaps playing the game in 2024 instead of 10 years ago when it was released has done the game a disservice. But put up against other Adventure Game Studio powered titles like the ones from Wadjet Eye, this one just doesn't measure up.
Its more of a book with slow gameplay, and while 3/4th of the game are worth it, the ending cames fast and answers zero questions. its like LOST the series..where you get more and more questions while the game doesnt reveal any of it. And then you realise you wasted lots of time on a story not worth your time.
Dear me, no
