Kick Ass Commandos is a bright, colourful shoot 'em up that is sadly also shallow and repetitive. I enjoyed myself for the first two hours. Ploughing through the enemy with a horde of commandos was immensely satisfying. As was completely wrecking the scenery with flame throwers and grenades. But it was only the momentum of that first fun that carried me to the final act. Kick Ass Commandos gets repetitve fast. Some have called it a bullet hell shooter but it's not. The slightly springy camera makes precision dodging difficult. The enemies bullets are small and fast and don't come in patterns, their only attack style is to shoot straight at the player with some random spread. The gameplay leans more to a stats/grind style than a skill based shooter. The Easy difficulty setting is far to easy but the Elite (second) difficulty requires levelling up health and damage before they can be meaningfully attempted. The core feature, the Commando companions, is a bit of a gimmick. There is no way to change their formation except to squish them into walls. At the beginning of the game they're overpowerd but towards the end they're useless except as brief bullet sponges. The Commandos get in the way, steal health, trip over mines and get hooked on things. I found the best option was to go it alone carefully and then come back and rescure them just before completing the stage. A troupe of elastic skating commandos on the late ice stages is a whole lot less fun than it sounds as they slew wildly into trapped crates and boxes. Garry, seriously man. Get out of the way. There's also number of small annoyances that compound the frustration. There are no in-game options, there is no music volume control. The - I assume - store bought muzak tracks are not balanced (and not great either). I had to quit the stage to turn down some of the louder tracks. Steam achievements only worked in the first two acts. The Commandos themselves are all identical with only different skins to distinguish them; there doesn't seem to be a way to respec points after they've been assigned. Points put into Valor are points wasted. The game icon is still the default Unity icon. The Steam overlay doesn't work. The irritating 'Please give us a positive review' message breaks In-home-streaming if clicked accidentally. The springy camera makes precision shooting whilst dodging difficult. All-in-all Kick Ass Commandos isn't terrible but it's only worth getting if it's heavlliy discounted. You'll probably only put a couple of hours of play time into it before moving on.
Hi! My name's Sasha Zenko. I'm from Belarus. I am making hardcore letsplay videos handsfree (using only my chin). I have a program that allows me to assign keyboard controls to mouse movements. I play your game. It's very good. I like it. Watch me playing your game without hands here: https://youtu.be/IeKK0HcgJuA
Awesome bullet hell! I loved the colorful art style, the weapons felt awesome, and there's a ton of characters to unlock. It has a fairly long campaign mode to enjoy while listening to a solid metal soundtrack. You will be rockin' and blastin'! If you enjoy games like Broforce you will probably love this too!
If you like shooters like "twin stick shooters", this is the game for you. Simple, varied and hugely entertaining. Many characters to use, different enemies and explosions everywhere. The commands are perfect, both M + K and pad. With the latest updates they added Donald Trump, Putin and Santa as playable characters XD Recommended! 7.8/10
This is a pretty solid, retro arcade styled, twin-stick shooter. There is a rain of blood, bullets and explosions at every turn with plenty of destructable landscape and baddies to take out. The movement and aim is pretty fluid making it easy to get into the action. There is nothing exceptional to this title but that doesn't prevent it from being a blast, at least in short play sessions. You do get a handful of different toons to select from. They all play the same, but you get to level them up and distribute attribute points for each one. There are also four difficulty settings to play through so you can choose what matches your mood that day. I think the price of this game is a little high for what it offers, but it's still a pretty fun game. If you like retro arcade action, then go ahead and get your Rambo on and try out this title!
Cannot recommend here. It is a genertic 1980s cliche themed bullet hell. It has no real thing that draws or keeps you in. The lack of ability to cut off the music is extremely annoying the development progress is very lack luster The "Characters" you unlock are in fact just skins, not actual new characters. Lack of multiplayer hurts. That is about all I can say about it in short. You probably will not enjoy this over games like Gungeon. Video Review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uv96XJlYPl8
Like a bright, colorful piece of candy, which you pop in your mouth for a few minutes, feel the nostalgia of childhood, then realise it's not even the real candy you loved from childhood, it's the dollar tree equivalent, and it tastes like inferior crap. 'How many unanimated dumb-AI rotating sprites can we put on screen?" is not the same as a good game.

it fun for the first few levels (maybe 2 hours), than it gets repetitive really fast. Not much tacital depth or strategies, just shoot everything. And way too grindy for a 100% achievementgame: After completing the game in 6 hours i got 400/1000 rescured soldiers, and 10.000/25.000 enemies killed.
I didn't pay a lot for this game. In fact, if I recall correctly, Groupies offered it as an extra game if one of its bundles sold enough. But one of the big reasons I bought into that bundle was that I hoped to get this game, because I like twin stick shooters and it looked cool. I had no delusions that it would be something fantastic, but it isn't that hard to make a twin stick shooter that's fun to play. To start, the game is trying to be like Broforce. I mean, it's a different genre and a different kind of game, but it's trying for a similar ambiance and a similar sense of humor. The humor here, for the most part, just falls flat. It's juvenile and stupid, which I would expect, but also completely unaware of how juvenile and stupid it is. There's a level that has you go into a military shower called don't drop the soap. There's something about Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump (both playable characters) being a couple. There's a lot of gay jokes for a game that was released in 2016, and they're not even original or funny. The humor also isn't intertwined into the game very well, it's just there, and a lot of times it comes down to "look at how random we're being." I mean, Santa Claus is a playable character. How does this fit into the theme of hyper-masculine army men blowing crap up? It doesn't. What special powers or cool abilities does Santa have? He doesn't. The game just lets you play as Santa Claus. With a gun! Isn't that so funny and random. Santa Claus. Shooting people. Humor aside, the gameplay isn't very good either. I really got the feeling that this game didn't know what it wants to be. You start out running through the level, and there's so many shots and explosions you can barely tell what's happening, and you can free POWs and then they fight alongside you, which is cool, and adds to the carnage. And that's great. But if you just run in and start shooting the crap out of everything, you die. You really want to approach the levels with a bit of strategy. Sneak around a bit, and slowly activiate enemies so that you can keep track of what's going on. But the game doesn't really have any stealth mechanics, and it isn't really built for this more intelligent play style, it's gameplay is designed for a game that's about blowing crap up. And then there's the POWs. They don't die when you accidentally shoot them like in most games, which is good for a game that's about shooting everything and blowing stuff up, but takes away any strategy involved in rescuing POWs. They'll also probably hinder you because if you get a few there will be too much stuff on screen to really tell what's going on. You also kind of control everyone, which is difficult, and made worse by the fact that if your main guy dies, you die, even if there are POWs still alive. In some ways its made like a game where you control a unit of guys, in some ways its not. In some ways it's about rescuing POWs, in some ways its not. There are also escort missions, and the way to play those is to leave the person behind and clear the level and then come back for them. Why? Because as hard as it can be to keep your main guy alive, it's so much more difficult to keep a specific POW you're supposed to escort alive. Keep in mind you're controlling this person and your main person and any other guys you've rescued with the same control pad and they all have to do the same thing and dodge bullets and also mines. There's a lot of guys to choose from, but besides some different starting stats, there's not really much difference between them. They don't have different guns or powerups or special abilities. You can level up your guys and increase their stats, but it's pretty basic, and just makes all of the characters play the same. I'm also sure some stats are better than others, though I didn't play long enough to figure out which. For instance there's a stat for hp and a stat for armor, and I'm sure one is preferable to the other. Same with there being a stat for damage and a stat for attack speed. One of those stats is going to give me more damage per second than the other. Ultimately this is a game that doesn't know what kind of game it wants to be and what it wants the player to do. But at the same time its not trying to be everything to everyone either. It doesn't seem to understand that there are different ways to design a game, and different creators will focus on different parts because that's the kind of game they want to make. And if the game is broken down to its bare bones, it's flawed, it's repetitive, and it doesn't really offer much. It even fails as a dumb twin-stick shooter to pass some time.
