I will update this review as I play more of the game. The weapons roster is good but the visual design feels a bit under developed and the vfx for the ammunition type can be a bit underwhelming like the runestaff and soul gun, They're not bad but they could be better. The sounds are quite good but the music lacks variety for different atmospheres. Episodes I & II were a lot of fun. Good design, good color palette, they were fun to play. The third episode on the other hand I thought was horrible. It was strangely abstract and not in a fun way for me, imbalanced placement of too many enemies in some of the later levels and convoluted level design in which I had to use god mod/no clip to recover and figure out where I am meant to go. I didn't like the third episode at all I thought it was pretty terrible and also the lack of fun outdoor areas wasn't great. I'm up to the last episode now so will update once I complete it.

Its a Doom mod being sold as a whole new game. level design is often nonsensical and down right annoying, with little to no indication of where you are supposed to go and what are you supposed to do. Low enemy variety for too many big maze like levels Even lower weapon variety Not a single weapon feels fun or satisfying to use Its not a terrible game, there's relative fun to be had here, but I cannot recommend this game. Unless you are a hardcore shooter fun like me, there's nothing to see here. Just move along. (Keeping the review positive because steam doesn't have a more ''indifferent'' option.

An award-winning Doom total conversion that got a release as a standalone game. At core it's still good old Doom - not the 2016/Eternal garbage, but the original 1993 thing in its whole pixelated glory with some slight graphic updates like dynamic lighting. The gameplay feels closer to Heretic: it's slower, more tactical and less chaotic, with huge maps full of puzzles. There are no long range hitscan weapons: both you and the enemy are mostly confined to slow projectiles, so combat mostly happens in close quarters and involves a lot of dodging. The maps are fantastic, sending you on a journey through various time periods, from fantasy castles and magic underworld realms to post-apocalyptic ruins and futuristic bases. I with the enemies were as diverse as the locations: their variety is even smaller than in the original Doom, and encounters soon become repetitive. I doubt I'll go back to replay it, but it was fun to play once.

This standalone game/mod running on the GZDoom engine is a hidden gem. The custom sprites, weapons and environments are excellently crafted and the midi music fits the game well. This is one of the few games that doesn't have annoying enemies, while except the flying eyes which resurrect enemies, but they easy to deal with. The only "negative" I have is that the story isn't in depth but that is to be expected from games during the 90s which this game takes inspiration from but it has a satisfying conclusion so I'd give them that. Overall if you like Doom or any first person shooters I'd highly recommend you give this game a try.

Проходил Rekkr ещё несколько лет назад в виде мода на Doom. Ещё тогда я подумал, что это лучший мод на думец, который я когда-либо видел. Необычная атмосфера, замечательный левел-дизайн, интересное оружие и враги, которые хоть и являются по сути вариациями врагов из Дума, но их способности и способы атаки перемешаны интересным образом, из-за чего враги ощущаются, как новые, к тому же все враги, оружие и текстуры перерисованы. Некоторые уровни настолько запоминающиеся своими фишками, архитектурой или внешним видом, что запомнились с тех пор, как я прошёл игру впервые и до сих пор. Странно, что бонусную главу разработчики решили удалить из стим-версии, пришлось проходить её снова в виде мода, зато добавили две новые главы, которых раньше не было, за что им, несомненно, респект. Глава Sunken Land - в духе старых глав игры, но с новыми врагами и внешним видом локаций, сделано всё снова на высшем уровне ([spoiler]особенно запомнилось путешествие по разным мирам через Иггдрасиль[/spoiler]) Особняком стоит глава VR-3KKR. Это набор хардкорных уровней с прикольными челленджами, но с максимально схематичной графикой. В итоге, могу сказать, что этот мод действительно заслуживал стать отдельной игрой, и я определённо рекомендую её всем любителям олдовых шутеров

This is more or less a total conversion of Doom using the gzdoom engine. A well made one. I didn't really enjoy it much at first; then it started growing on me a little bit. I like that they tried telling a story through the level designs. But overall I didn't enjoy the levels much. There are some interesting enemies but were mostly rather dull. The weapons are missing some "punchyness" and felt kind of weak. I do appreciate that this is not just a re-skin of Doom. The enemies and weapons are not 1:1 to dooms. Not much else to say; if you like your Dooms and doomlikes this one is just ok.

OK, scrap my previous review and recommendation. This game blows, even if it is old school gaming it adds nothing to even entice you to play on. The map design is AWFUL, it looks like levels put together on a fast pace with no intresting things to do or find. DO NOT BUY(especially not at full price).

The build of GZdoom that this game is bundled with crashes in full-screen because it tries to open on my second monitor and ends up freezing. It open's fine on my personal copy of GZdoom though.
