Indiana Jones meets Lara Croft and I always miss a puzzle clue and take forever to land the final hit with the bow. Is it a hot take to say the prize is fine ? VR development is neither easy or a guaranteed success, people invest a lot of time and these people did not use some 2 poly assets and called it 9,99 Survival Bottom. Graphics and performance are playable. The story is interesting and world feels really nice. I played so many vr titles that I got used to that movement quick some Blade and run like a Sorcerer with Stride jumping. Furthermore it is something original. Thanks for the game !
Disappointed, the game is fun enough but the save and bugs are too much. I had to restart multiple times from a backup save until for some reason the game saved over my backup to a spot super early in the gameplay. I am just too frustrated to continue. This should not be happening in a game that has been out for 4 months. NDreams, you are beginning to really disappoint. Not sure if I will be buying any of your jank in the future.
[strike]I am recommending it, but with a REALLY big asterisk - there is a pretty big bug that will likely have you replaying a chapter near the end. This has been reported on the Steam forums and the Discord and still hasn't been patched. [/strike] There now has been a patch which includes a fix for this issue, so I am now just I am just giving this a recommendation without any asterisk. Despite the bug, I quite like this game! I'm not sure what is so "dated" about this design that some of the other reviews are talking about. I like the climbing and parkour sections of the game. There is a decent story here - it's nothing special and fairly straight forward, but I like it nonetheless. The bow is fairly good, though I do think it doesn't fully fit here with the faster pace of the game - it definitely wants you to run around in the combat sections, but I found it to often just be better to hide in one spot. If you are playing on an Index, you may need to use a custom binding to get the grip to work - check out the custom bindings by Hookman. Though with those, you may need to edit them as I found the right thumbstick click was bound to the left thumbstick, so spriting was on the wrong controller.
Looks good, feels good to play, movement/climbing is well executed, combat is okay... But the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ buggy save system ruins it completely! Had to replay 1h+ in the first 2 hours because upon reloading a checkpoint the enemies disapperaed, and the objective/progression trigger was "Eliminate enemies". From then on I was constantly rotating backup save like no tomorrow, the next wtf moment was when the big baddie forces you to wait through a big exposition dump for dunno 3-4 minutes, only to after that the game releases me and I die in the fall and have to re-"play" (more like wait) the boring ♥♥♥♥ again, because apparently the devs are unable to make a scripted event with a predictable outcome, HOW THE ♥♥♥♥ IS THIS EVEN POSSIBLE? Then I'm writing this review after being placed on the rails without the train under me after the City Outskirts loading screen, replaying the previous 15 minutes because I forgot to backup save more often, only to get placed on the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rails again with the train instaporting from under me to the station and being unable to proceed further. ♥♥♥♥ this piece of ****.
I'd give this an "eh" if steam had one, but ultimately I'm going to lean towards positive to encourage VR devs to continue making VR games. The core gameplay here really is quite engaging; climbing in VR is fun enough, but upon enhancing it with grappling, leaping, moving objects, running, jumping, and so on it really does get to another level (there's a little jank in the movement, but not so much that it ruins what's there). The unfortunate part is that the devs really, really want this to be a "triple A" game. They made a story that I didn't really care about, environmental puzzles that weren't terrible but ruined the flow of gameplay, comically long door opening animations that you have to sit through genuinely once every minute or so, really long elevators for no reason, and so on. They couldn't just let their gameplay speak for itself and instead put in a bunch of stuff that is just boring and ruins the pacing. This game would be so much better if the development time put into all the extra crap was instead put into making more levels and streamlining the movement from one section to the next. There's also bugs and some questionable decisions (the whole game looks samey and it's easy to stumble upon old checkpoints and have to replay some sections, for example) throughout. It sounds like there used to be really bad issues with saves corrupting, but there's now a chapter select that should fix the worst of those problems (I never had to use it myself, though). Overall, it's manageable. TLDR: if this were a flatscreen game, I'd thumbs it down in an instant due to the horrendous pacing and general jank. However, because of how bad the VR games market is right now, the fact that the core gameplay captures the fun of parkour in VR so well forces me to give it a thumbs up. Buy on sale.
A very immersive VR game. New abilities are introduced throughout the game keeping it interesting. Quite often there are very fast moving challenges for example sliding down a zip line and then having to jump. The dynamics in this game is brilliant. I would have given Reach VR a high rating if it was not for coming across programming bugs in the game. After 5 hours play my last save corrupted, this can trap you in the game where it is impossible proceed. I had to revert to a much earlier save and re play a level. Then towards the end of the game, finishing a level by taking the mono rail metro, after the next part loads, you are left on the mono rail track without reaching the station. I was unable to finish the game which was a great shame.
The "City outskirt bug" close to the end of the game is known for weeks - maybe even more. I ran into it myself today and cannot proceed. I am not repeating about 2 hours of gameplay just in HOPE the bug will not occur again. Devs, you really need to find a solution for something like that. For now, that is unfortunately a thumbs down review as it is a major bug preventing to finish the game. Especially frustrating after streaming the game for weeks now and then end it like this. I guess it will not be resolved until next week, so I guess that's it for me for now. As this is not the first soft lock that is known you maybe you should have thought about having at least the latest 3 autosaves to jump even further back than the last one that is broken, just having to restart at the chapter beginning is a punch in the face and no guarantee it works on the second try. Or at least make ALL chapters available, even if they were not started yet, that would have saved a lot of people.
