hidden gem in the trap defense genre. highly recommend !! the audio design and graphics are super cozy good vibes, and the trap variety and maps offer a lot to explore and enjoy. great game to pass the time and has a unique feel that i can't put down. flinging monsters into water sources never gets old, and i like the variety of strategies that are viable here. minor gripe that you have only 2 trap spec resets per save, made worse by the fact the trap tree is click-on-purchase with no confirmation screen. this is way too limited and unusual for the genre, so pick traps carefully. the in-game CRT filter isn't very good, so i play with ShaderGlass to get the retro vibe perfect. YMMV.
Dungeon Warfare ripoff? EDIT: All that game achieved was to make me want to reinstall Dungeon Warfare.
https://youtu.be/_ErNWADb4ow What it lacks in fidelity it makes up in strong core systems, tower defense with a lot of trap variety, mission types, and upgrades.
I'm not particularly interested in tower defense games, but the title caught me eye. Rats, Bats & Bones? Yes, tell me more. I was captivated by the catchy title, the simple yet full of personality pixelart and the banger spooky synthwave ost. Turns out the game's really fun. It was really enjoyable all the way through. Good variety of traps and some interesting enemies that require certain strategies, but not overwhelming. It was really fun figuring out how things work and even discovering some funny interactions (fling trap + shotgun is all i'm gonna say, that combo made me laugh). Fling traps may not be super universal, but on maps with water/lava their fun factor is incredibly high. My favorite for sure. There's a few upgrade trees to unlock, with new traps, passive buffs you can mix and match on each map and permanent passives. A limited amount of refunds might be a problem, tho i never used any myself. Striking a balance between unlocking new traps, and upgrading existing ones that were effective, seemed to be the key. Some negative reviews say that act 3 is way too hard. Personally i didn't mind act 3 at all. Obviously it was a bit harder, some new enemies to catch you off guard, but nothing too crazy. Just observe and learn from your encounter, and you'll do better next time. I've done act 1 and 2 on medium, and redid maps on hard for more upgrades. A great loop of getting stronger, so you can do hard mode you couldn't do before, to get stronger again. I didn't tryhard that much in act 3, mostly satisfied with medium clears, sometimes not even perfect ones. You can't play hard mode without doing medium first, so why worry about perfecting every map immediately. Just keep going! I finished the game with all upgrade trees almost maxed out, then redid maps on hard with full arsenal. It was a bit challenging at times but really fun! And the game is really cheap, especially when on a sale. Finishing the game took me like 20 hrs, then i played a bunch more for achievements. Overall great experience, even for someone totally new to this genre!

Rats, Bats & Bones is a tower defense game developed and published by Smallfry Games and was released back in 2019 just before halloween. Player takes role of an Engineer traversing a medieval countryside ravaged by the undead an eldritch horrors and must find the source of evil and destroy it. With the aid of your traps you can force the enemies take a certain path through the level. You can also use the environment to your advantage. If you manage to push or bounce enemies into water/lava they'll be instantly killed. Pros: + Good amount of towers and upgrades to play with. There are a couple useless towers you'll almost never find use for though. + OK enemy variety. There are some enemies who are just stronger reskins of earlier ones but most do have unique abilities such as being able to heal other enemies or immunity towards certain damage type. + Challenging but fair difficulty. Many negative reviews have called the latter half tediously hard but I personally didn't mind the third act. There are admittedly couple annoying stages in the game but nothing seriously aggravating. Every enemy has a weakness and once you learn them the game becomes a breeze. + OUTSTANDING sountrack. Goes perfectly with the game and is an essential part of the gameplay experience. + Game has comfy ZX Spectrum-esque graphics. Sprites for different things are distinct enough as well. You can tell different towers & enemies apart from each other easily. Neutral: +- Game runs OK though it did crash & freeze a couple times during my playthrough. No lag during normal play but later waves in Endless Mode will tank your performance due to how many enemies there are on the screen. Cons: - Audio has weird clipping problems when there's a lot happening simultaneously. Music in the main menu would also "freeze" at times which was annoying. - Game becomes rather grindy if going for all achievements or wanting to beat the levels on hard because to unlock hard mode for a level you have to beat it on medium difficulty first. This means that you need to play through the entire game twice for Hardcore achievement (or thrice if you first beat levels on easy like me). - You have a limited amount of refunds for skill tree respecs. I really recommend this game to any fan of tower defense games. It took me around 19 hours to 100% the game though you can probably squeeze another 10-15 hours of playtime if going for 5 skulls on all maps' endless modes. And if 5 bucks feels like too steep of a price for you, don't worry, the game does go on sale for really cheap (down to less than 1 euro).
Low-res tower defence with a fun aesthetic and interesting challenges. I enjoy the flexibility of unlocking different towers and strategies, and absolutely think it's worth the price. The soundtrack's also fun.
Fun lo-fi Tower Defense game, this is a well thought out solid game. It gets pretty tough for the end levels even on easy, but generally you can get by with a little strategy and the correct trap/bonus selection. The focus is the gameplay and it is done very well, with no bugs or issues for my play even on a Steam Deck. Graphics and story is pretty minimal, but it is fun if you can overlook small studio limitations.
Anyone who liked Dungeon Warfare will love this too. It have very similar gameplay with even more retro graphics.
