Great port, but still needs a few refinements. In game text is still in Japanese and lack of achievements seem to be obvious future fixes. Please do this soon because this is a terrific game. The discount launch price is so good that I bought the soundtrack as well. Please consider bringing Radirgy 2 and Illmatic Envelope Swamp to Steam.
an endurance bite sized version of the regular radirgy series with the series staples excellent music, unique visual style and score attack gameplay rather than having a traditional set of levels. port seems pretty good out of the box. an easy rec for anyone slightly interested, worth buying just for the music.
let's all love radirgy
Bring Illmatic Envelope Swamp to Steam.
TL;DR: borderline unemployed schoolgirl dropout simulator where you extract a microSD from a coffee machine (allegedly); shoot, slice, and groove to the OST. buy it at least for the OST alone. dirt cheap too! Don't feel like reading? Watch my video on the port here! Subtitled for convenience (no vocal commentary): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5PC-_OLXAw ====== It's Radirgy SWAG, finally on PC! It's a great casual style shmup that could be considered a break for bullet hell fans from CAVE to RAIZING. Originally ported to Switch (and delisted only a few years later), this entry of Radirgy feels a much more fast paced compared to the original 2005 counterpart. In this game, you play as a borderline NEET purple haired high school dropout with her only way of surviving being a practically dead end job of collecting garbage and debris in the city. The gameplay controls are not too bad to learn, but the real fun comes in knowing how to chain your attacks and movements together, all the while trying not to become hyperstimulated from the billions of things going on in the screen! DDP Daifukkatsu fans might have a field day with this one. It goes without saying RS is a really difficult game, and I mean ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ difficult. There are no continues or credits, it's just a "can you reach the end in one sitting" type of game, but learning all the nuances and patterns of enemies, like with any shmup, is really how you get through this shmup. Where Radirgy has always shined for me was the OST; every entry of Radirgy has always had genuine bangers, I guess these days people would call it rally house? Radirgy SWAG is no exception, it's got a hard hitting OST that strays away from the usual heavy metal, orchestral or trance techno styled OSTs. I'd 100% recommend the OST bundle at that point. I mean it kinda makes sense that the game has a chill yet energizing OST, considering how overstimulating this game is. ====== Now for those who are looking for notes on the actual port: - There are only two languages available: English and Japanese. The Switch version had 6 total languages, including Dutch, Spanish, Italian and French, which are missing in this version for some reason. A lot of the game (specifically its Mailer messages) are grandly untranslated for whatever reason... Edit on this note: I found out that the Mailer in the Switch version had significantly less kinds of mail you could receive, most, if not all, coming from your co-worker in the game. In this version of RS, it comes with WAY more messages, and I'm guessing it's only stuck with two languages in the meantime because of all the translation work that would need to be done with those. - The game is locked to 60hz, so it's possible the game runs on frame pacing. There's no 4k available either. - The pickups and powerups have had their icons changed into glyphs in order to better fit what they do, compared to the original release using Kanji. The game comes with a manual fully translated to English, which includes a legend of each pickup! - The gameplay still feels remarkably responsive, I couldn't notice any latency issues. You can also play with a keyboard! - Glyphs are incorrect in the controller settings: Where your X/Square and Triangle/Y buttons should be are fine, but for some reason, in gameplay, Circle/B and Cross/A are flipped? Aside from these notes, it's a solid enough port, it could probably theoretically run on a toaster considering the low spec requirements!
I initially picked this up on Switch out of respect. After Milestone fell apart, then Klon, no one would have blamed these guys for going and being code monkeys at Capcom or wherever. Yet they kept it real, kept doing their thing, and I respect that. That said, I wasn't expecting much, as I wasn't the biggest fan of the original Radirgy (thought it was a bit of a mess. Still do, tbh) So I was flat-out shocked how much I REALLY liked Swag. It was like they reinvented the wheel, and successfully took the genre from big-screen machines in arcades to small-screen machines on the bus/train/subway. While there's no shortage of ports of vertical arcade shooters on the Switch, the hardware itself isn't exactly optimal for playing them. You have 2/3 of an already small screen that's unused, and in the usable third you're controlling a small ship, shooting small enemies, and dodging really, really small bullets. And that's before you have to fight a boss that takes up a third of the usable third, now making the playfield on the six-inch screen REALLY small. Radirgy Swag remedies ALL of this, while preserving the experience and enjoyment one gets from playing these games to begin with. A run is 10-12 minutes long tops (you can achieve special criteria to extend this) of non-stop action (seriously, there's no stage breaks). It's very fast, very hectic, but you will have fun, and you will totally forget about that guy across from you who may be dangerously insane. Not to mention, you won't have to don 6x reading glasses to do this, as everything is big, bright, and pops off the screen. The Steam version is identical to the Switch except the instructional text is now in English (the 'flavor' spam messages that pop up are still in kanji). However, per the norm with this dev, a lot is left mysterious and is up to player discovery. In interest of full disclosure, my first run on Windows was rough for whatever reason (lots of dropped frames and stuttering), but it ran identical to Switch after a re-launch (oddly, I didn't have this issue on my lower spec linux machine. Go figure...) Is this a good showcase of your understanding of deep mechanics and pattern memorization? Absolutely not. It's a sugar-rush of a shooter you can carry around in your bag. But if you have an affinity for the genre and a steam deck (or the like), you pretty much NEED this (especially for what they're selling it for). It's a real good time on a regular monitor too.
I haven't gotten around to playing it a lot yet, but the first impression this game is giving me is really neat! Before getting into the gameplay, the menu and manual (Which i recommend reading, it's short and to the point anyway!) are oozing with character. The settings menu for example is a breaker box with the different settings being switches and dials, cute! The gameplay itself is simple in concept, you got a sword for melee attacks, a shield/bomb and two shots you can switch between on the fly. You can use the sword to attack items as well, changing their category from one to another, so you gotta make sure to stop using it whenever there's a power-up you need right now, like attack power or a battery charge (Your Life meter). You also wanna spam that shield as much as possible because it recharges at an absurd rate and enemy fire at higher speeds can get just as absurd. It's a very hectic and fun gameflow! There's no bosses or anything, so your goal is just to survive the constant enemy waves and reach the end, which goes by faster by picking up speed items, although that also leads to more enemies spawning, so you need to judge what speed you can handle best. The soundtrack fits the vibe of the game really well, from aesthetics to gameplay, but I don't wanna say too much about it when I've only played for half an hour. All I can say at the moment is that it's definitely good. In conclusion, if the game looks or sounds interesting, pick it up! The price kinda shocked me with how good it was and that 35% launch discount is what made me just grab it immediately instead of thinking about it. I hope this release means that more RS34 games get released here in the west and on Steam, cause they all look real interesting!
Listen ok I love this series so much, I have imported every single modern RS34 game from Japan to play on my Switch. I cannot get enough of them. This game is so good. Please buy it. Please support RS34. Please let them know to keep localizing these games. My only complaint is much of the non-necessary information like the spam messages are still untranslated, but the game provides enough info to actually navigate and play with ease, and that's what really matters. EDIT: They localized the flavor text!! It's so charming!! I love this game :3 Please do Ilvello Swamp next pls pls pls
