About
DARIUSBURST Chronicle Saviours is the latest installment in Taito's DARIUS series of arcade-style shooting games. Blast hordes of alien sea-monsters, and blaze your own trail through branching environments.
Features:
The richest content in the Darius series: all the arcade content from Another Chronicle EX (AC), plus the all-new Chronicle Saviours (CS) Mode.
In AC Mode, you have multiple modes: Original, Original EX, and Chronicle Mode. Original Mode is an authentic recreation of the arcade campaign with its branching levels. Original EX mode is a harder version of the arcade campaign, designed for players that want an extra challenge.
Chronicle Mode includes a whopping 3000+ stages that can be unlocked by global players. Each time a world is unlocked by a player on your cabinet*, you get access to it too. Race to save them all!
CS Mode is a single player story mode with 200+ stages, spanning the entire timeline of DARIUS history. Revisit classic Darius ships and music in this ultimate fan experience!
9 playable ships to choose from, including Silver Hawk variants from classic Darius games, and a new CS-exclusive ship. Some ships are equipped with powerful Burst weapons, while others have strong base firepower. Pick the playstyle that suits you best, and use your ship’s unique strengths and weaknesses to blast through your enemies.
Over 40 enormous aquatic-themed battleships including series favorites like "Great Thing" and "Iron Fossil" as well as new CS-exclusive bosses.
A haunting and memorable Zuntata soundtrack, including classic tracks and entirely new compositions. Play it loud for the full Darius experience!
Up to 4-player local co-op with unique mechanics like sharable power-ups and Burst weapon combos.
Graphical settings for a variety of resolutions in 16:9 and 32:9 aspect ratios—up to 3440 x 1440 resolution.
AC Mode supports dual monitors with a 32:9 aspect ratio, and up to 6880 x 1440 resolution. The 32:9 aspect ratio appears letterboxed on single-screen displays to preserve the appearance of the original game. CS Mode is optimized for single-monitor displays to give a larger picture. No matter what your setup, DARIUSBURST CS is a truly massive visual experience!
Steam achievements, online leaderboards, and cloud backup saves are supported. Compete to see who can get the best score in each area!

*Here's how the cabinet feature works; when you begin playing DARIUSBURST CS, you'll be assigned a random virtual cabinet. As you complete areas in Chronicle Mode, you'll liberate planets and unlock new areas. Whenever you liberate a world, it will also be unlocked and shared with other players that are in the same cabinet. Compete with other players to see who can clear the most worlds, or see who can get the highest score in each world. It's like a miniature universe that you share with other players!

Reviews
I feel duped. I should have bought the base game first, and not all the addons, but the reviews fooled me. The game has only one positive, and that is it's appealing visuals, at first glance, but now that I've played 50+ levels, including a bunch of DLC levels, I can safely say this shooter is severely flawed and not worth any price. Why: 1 The levels are near empty, and crazy repetative. 2. There are maybe 10 levels, which are re-used in all 5000+ levels. 3. The levels are short, very short. 4. There are only 2 level-types have 'surroundings' so permanent structures which stay, and the rest of all the levels is empty, so just enemies circling. Sure sometimes the background changes a bit, but there is no surrounding, they're empty levels. The surroundings the game does have are really, really badly designed: contact means instant death, and it's hard to see where the 'structure' ends and the background begins; it's all very blurry, and you'll often find yourself magically dying by 'bumping' into the structure, which popped out of now-where from the bottom of the screen (so not coming from the scrolling-direction of where the enemies come from). 5. There are but 4 types of enemies across all levels; outside of a boss there are no interesting enemies to speak of, they repeat the same 4 types with every level: a couple of 'streams' of flimsy enemies, sometimes a bigger round ball that has extremely predictable lame movement, and sometimes some jellyfish that slowly crosses the screen diagonally with no attack pattern whatsoever, followed by the end of each level: a boss. The levels are short, real short. 6. The bosses are 'boring' in the sense that they have a few moves , and these simply rotate, but the pattern never evolves: they don't change their pattern or attack types after a certain amount of damage like virtually all other games with bossfight. 7. There is no evolution; you can't gather anything that adds permanent upgrades to your ship. 8. The sound is simply crap. Hitting something, not hitting something, I can't tell the difference. And for that matter: 9. Damage: how much (more) damage you do after a powerup? No idea, everything dies quickly really, except the boss. How much life the boss has left? No idea, no indicator, nothing, it just takes long or short depending on the 'level-difficulty'. It's just a plain bad side-scroller. This game does not begin to compare in any way, shape or form with some of the great scroller-shooters like Sky Force, Xenon II, etc.
This is one of those, "Do I recommend it?" reviews more than a "Is it good game one?" I got it for dirt cheap, and its exactly what I wanted for this evening. It's an arcade game that'll be great for one, single night and I wouldn't recommend it for a penny more than you'd pay for that. Starting with the good, the Arcade Mode is great and the gameplay itself is solid. I don't want to minimize this in my review because its a good enough shmup with a really great arcade mode. This arcade mode has TWO "branching Campaigns" and a mission mode with thousands of levels. If thats not enough... the CS Modes is another additional ~200 stages to play! About the only complaint here is the same one I've had with 95% of Shmups since the late 90s... the visuals can often interfere with reading the screen. Between the explosions, particles, the camera movements and surprisingly bad set of indications for enemy/level design... I find myself taking gaming but not knowing from where. That said, you often have 20+ hit points. It feels sloppy, but it feels fair. So... Arcade mode is great. Core mission loop is great. That boatloads of content is... umm... But DARIUSBURST CS is proof that you can have loads of "content" without actually having any content. There's some really interesting ideas in this design, but there's no part of me that actually thinks they work. The entire game has, lets say, 16 short stages and 8 bosses (Each with a powered up alternate form). Each of these thousands of levels is a seemingly random combination of the Stages/Bosses/Loadouts/Player Ship/Rules. This isn't really BAD since you do get some fun combinations. 4 boss stages back to back, feels different than 3 stages and a super boss as does the different playable ships. There's SOME interesting variety. But that variety is already running out for me at 2 hours. I'm repeating the same few stages, the same couple bosses, and the enjoyment is slowing. Over and over and ooooover. There are rare unique missions that try to change up the formula with something like "Defense Missions" where you need to destroy ALL the enemies or they harm your defense target. But realistically, they don't change up the core formula enough, nor do they appear often enough to break up the monotony. The real joy in the game comes from the genuinely different ships, I believe, based on different eras of the series. One ship has options, one ship has old-school bombs, some have lasers, etc. But those are directly tied to the seemingly random missions unless you interact with the next WTF design choice. In CS mode, you can spend alot more money to unlock a new ship. It's taken me about 2 hours and 30 missions to afford the first, lowest cost ship. But despite unlocking the ship for boatloads of money... you still need to RENT the ship and weapon upgrades! For example: In my case at 2 hours, I can: - Play the mission with the level's fully upgraded ship for free (That generally has supermoves) - Spend 6K money to rent the original games ship with no supermoves, plus another 5K for weapons and then more money for shields. So, while you unlock these ships... they aren't really usable unless you want to spend even more grind currency. Upgrades purchased are for one stage. Overall, its a mixed bag of feelings. I LIKE what's here... but I find that its a very sloppy combination of pieces and I would have preferred a better designed game with 5% of the content. Price-wise? This is waaaaaaay higher than I'd ever recommend the game for even to its core fanbase. You can get a good sale on it... but even then... just be aware that it feels alot smaller than it looks.
Dariusburst is a port AND a new game at the same time, it brings to PC the entire arcade experience (sadly the game is missing the Another Chronicle EX+ upgrade that allows you to use the Murakumo on that mode and the online events that the arcade had and are available on the switch version), on the other side Chronicle Saviours is a full new gamemode with 186 missions and 9 different ships to choose from; As of writing this review I've clocked 97hrs and I'm still nowhere near fully clearing CS mode so there's a lot for you to do. Gameplay wise this is a honest shoot'em up with it's unique mechanic being the Burst weapon that you can either use as a fixed laser that will hit anything in a straight line from it's fixed position or forgo your normal shot and use a focused burst beam that has a special interaction with the burst beams of your enemy and that is counterbursting, which actually rewards practice and patience to master it as you not only get a damage boost but a higher score multiplier when killing enemies including bosses. History, and yes there is one a long but at the same time short story, ACEX is a 32:9 retelling of Second Prologue's story and mostly just another side of the war BUT Chronicle Saviours is a straight continuation of the story from the PSP game Dariusburst (2009), specifically Ending 3(vs Syvalion) and pretty much is the culmination of a war that has been intermittenly happening for close to 2 millenia against the Belsar, althought hard to piece together if you only play CS and forgo all other games you will not miss anything outside of cameos/lore drops of the older games MCs; If you have played the PSP version OR SP you will get to see the fate of both MCs (kinda). Onto the music, and what can I tell you it is ZUNTATA once again, you even get to hear all the songs from the older games on all stages that you get to use those ships. I will truly never get tired of hearing One Down between stages with the Genesis or SELF during a final boss with the Gaien. DLCs... well they are totally optional you can't play with the ships/characters from each DLC on ACEX or CS mode so... yeah, the guidebook is a really cool addition tho I recommend it if you want to know extra stuff about the games, sadly it is not translated for some reason nor is it available as a PDF/EPUB. As a final note, to this day remote play is broken and you WILL need to plug in an extra control if you want someone else to play with, and this increases by 1 for every other player. Thankfully there's a workaround via x360ce or any other controller emulator, you just need to fake that you have 4 controllers plugged in whenever you want to remote play (the other person MUST use a controller).
"Hey, Mikey?" "Yeah?" "Whaddya think woulda happened if 'R-Type Final' was actually 'Darius?'" "I think it would have been something like 'DARIUSBURST Chronicle Saviours,' Paulie." Or, to restate, it was shortly after I started playing this that I thought, "This is Taito's 'R-Type Final.'" Although, with less variety of ship choice, and a different graphical style. But some of the similarities were pretty eerie. "DARChroSav" is definitely an arcade port. It's meant to be a devourer of quarters - guaranteed to kill you repeatedly until you've memorized everything, though easily defanged if you have unlimited continues. The graphics and enemy designs are pretty neat, but you won't get much time to look at anything because of all the projectiles you have to dodge. (That's just the way these things go.) The boss battles have a good dose of interest, but they also boil down to hammering a bullet sponge for several minutes. Of course, you can spend enough time to really learn all the patterns, but I don't find memorization to be all that fun. The game promises a gazillion missions, and I certainly don't expect all of that to be handcrafted, but the content remixing got very samey in a hurry. There was also significant "clunk" factor, where finishing a mission in a certain mode dumps you all the way back into a primary menu, instead of letting you continue on with another zone as one might expect. That, in particular, seemed to be a strange choice to me. Is this fun? Sure, it's a game I could have enjoyed in an arcade and also appreciated on my own PC. But 3 hours of it was plenty.
It's arcade action. So if you don't get driven to replay shmups and break high scores then you might not be satisfied with what's offered here. I enjoy it. And for the sale price of $12.50 I'd say it's very much worth it. I need more Darius in my life even if I suck at these games. And it's a great way to get more use out of my ultrawide monitor : ) I also like the DLC offerings here, something I rarely care for due to marketing practices of companies ever since DLC started becoming standard. But here we get some unique ships from other game series to have a try at. Good deal.
had the game for years. bought off of nostalgia. can barely be bothered to hit 43 hrs so far? the level design is poor. beyond being repetative it comes down to just memorising the "correct" way to beat them, it hardly feels like bullet hell when the only way your succeeding is watching a guide that you timed to 2 seconds in advance so you know where your supposed to be.
I had a lot less fun playing this than I did the PSP version of Dariusburst (which plays more like a traditional Darius game). I wish that version had been localised and released on Steam instead of this.
