I was born in the '80s so Prominence reminded me a lot of the Myst series. They were released back in the '90s. Graphics were not that advanced at the time so while you were able to look around in first person view in these games your cursor always became an arrow showing the direction in which you could walk. There was no actual walking, though. You suddenly saw all objects closer! But one could also mention those RPG / FPS games where you could only turn 90 degrees while controlling your party and - again - take one step (screen) at a time in the dungeon you were exploring. This is what Prominence gives you. Whenever you can move ahead your cursor changes (the same goes for inspecting an object such as a computer terminal). Our protagonist does make a few steps to reach the desired destination. If you want you can completely turn off these transition animations. I personally liked them as they helped with the immersion. Also, if it is a long corridor the transitioning often takes longer - you do not get to stop everywhere so unnecessary places are skipped as they are part of these short cutscenes (why allow the player to stop in the middle if they won't find anything there?). As for the story: those classics I referred to were fantasy but this is pure sci-fi. You wake up on a vessel that is malfunctioning and, apparently, it is without a crew. Where are the others? First, pull yourself together and get out of Medical and start exploring! There's lots of puzzles to do and if you want to know more of the background story you're best bet is to check each terminal. Don't worry, you are not alone during the entire story. Once you do some reparations you befriend the ship's A.I. called Annie. As more and more areas open up Annie hints at the next possible location you should head into as by having an updated objective you do not know immediately where to go. I had fun with Prominence. To use a pun: it is a prominent member of the indie / adventure / nostalgia-inducing / point-and-click / casual / no-way-to-die video game category. Thanks for the game, Beth! Oh hey, this is my 700th review!
Prominence is a good but somewhat unremarkable point-and-click adventure. It is a familiar story - you wake up on an empty spaceship. The crew is absent and there is evidence that an 'event' has occurred. The ship's A.I. comes online and guides/assists you as you discover what happened. You learn about the past by reading emails and listening to voice mails and audio recordings. Your ultimate objective is to save the mission (the details of which you learn about along the way). The game world is created with a nice level of detail and quality voice acting is used for the crew recordings. Most of your time is spent gaining access to new areas and then traversing the ship to diagnose and repair systems. There are components and tools to find and use and a few configuration puzzles (power levels, blue print data flows, etc.). The game has an explicit save system with many slots which is always a blessing. This allows you to restore to an earlier point in the story to pick up missed achievements or to change your final decision without replaying the entire game. I'd recommend Prominence to adventurers looking for a straight-forward point-and-click story. It is a solid game with easy mechanics. Once you get the lay of the spaceship, you'll be whizzing between rooms and floors like a veteran astronaut. If you are a fan of this genre but want a more engaging game, you might consider Tacoma or The Station. If point-and-click science fiction is your cup of tea but you thrive on puzzles, then the Black Cube games (A.S.A. and Catyph) might be a better choice.
Liked the game a lot. Very well done for a team of 4 people. An inventory, original Myst-like, sci-fi game. Instead of 2-D renders at various points., like in the original Myst, they used panoramic renders, which is much better, but not as good as true 3-D.
Loved it! By the way, if this game is your jam, find yourself a copy of Mission Critical right now!
Fun mission. Smooth sailing with or without clues. A positive yes !
They call it "A science-fiction adventure game" ... And yes it is !!! Probably one of the best point and click adventures I´ve ever played ... Thanks !
This game didn't do it for me. Clunky controls, extremely odd puzzle logic, and very small/miss-able hot spots for items and interactions just led to a confusing experience. Saw no reason to continue playing after the first 10 minutes.
Prominence is a really nice game, similar to old school Myst or Uru. It's an enhanced version of the mechanics of those older games in a science fiction setting. Puzzles so far are okay, not too hard but some of them are a little too discrete and I had to use a guide to navigate through. Sound is good, and visuals are pretty, overall I like this game and they've spent a long time on voice actors and voice overs. I would recommend people try it at a discount, I have no regrets getting it.
