Summary
Extremely short minimalist platformer with a sad realistic story. Pros + Interesting story + Fun mechanics Cons - Too short
Overview
Pretentious Game is an extremely short minimalist platformer with only a few levels but having completely different and interesting mechanics for each. It is mostly telling a story that's surprisingly not particularly pretentious but quite sad and something that likely many people have experienced before. Though an interesting game, I highly suggest picking this up when on sale due to it being a 5 minute play. I'd played the original single chapter flash version of Pretentious Game around the time of its release and thought it was... okay. It hit a younger me in my feelings, which obviously was intended. Now many years later I come to find that there were a few more chapters that released after the point I'd already packed it away in my memory. Having decided to give the rest of the game a go I'm left with a... tepid, impression. I do appreciate the emotional angle it's trying to approach from but, the entire narrative strikes me as melodramatic in an unflattering way, even if the prose itself is decent. I would try to be kind and say for 2014 (the game jam version was 2012 I believe) the approach is novel, but by that point we already had Thomas Was Alone which I feel was much more impactful in its writing. The minimalist graphics are passable, and the puzzles are decent, but I don't feel like there's much to play for narratively. The game's about an hour long, which is to its benefit because this would wear very thin very quickly if it were any longer. For the two bucks they're asking, it's worth seeing if you'd like it.
This game while short, is a fun (AT FIRST) knock off clone of "Thomas Was Alone". The story itself was very deep and real and I liked how the writing shows the powerful emotions between the characters or blocks in this case. The game play, however, leaves much to be desired. It's pixel picky later when you have to play the "kids" epsiode. While I did look at a video down the road how to solve some of the puzzles, it's just pixel picky about it (you HAVE to be precise and in puzzle platformer games, makes its more undesireably fun than rewarding). Edit note: I did see were eventually you can swap between the two but not until you pass some of the very VERY picky puzzles of movement at the same time. It just doesn't execute well. Imagine Thomas Was Alone (FANTASTIC game BTW) but with azz poor control mechantics and what you have is A Very Pretentious Game Indeed. For the price ($1.99) up to that point of the game was very enjoyable and innovative with the key words. When it comes to platformer puzzles, nothing is more frustrating when YOU KNOW the solution to a puzzle (whether you figure it out yourself or see a walkthrough and trying to execute it afterwards) to fail very easily because the puzzle is pixel picky. We are humans. Not computers nor super robots. For that, sadly I have to thumbs down purely on the game play. Overall score 5/10 -5 simply because of poor game play mechantics.
It really is pretentious. It's also extremely short.
Gostei bastante.
damn these blocks be gettin in my feelings ;;__;; <3 i still love this lil game sooo much :3
I have followed this game from the moment I found it. I love everything about it. The only problem I have is that I can't move the mountain in the "You proved that love could move mountains" Level, please fix that. (HP Pavilion 17)
Oh, the ludonarrative harmony. lol, lmao
