A series of vaporwave levels with very simple pinball gameplay. There are 5 'tables' with 3 to 4 'screens' each. Once you hit all the goals on a screen you move on to the next one inside the same table. You unlock more 'tables' by ranking up score, which is cumulative, so you likely will unlock everything organically. The tables are very basic and play like early video game pinball, which is perfectly fitting for the aesthetic. As such, I don't think it has much replay value, but it's definitely not a bad time.
If you're looking for a accurate modern, pinball simulation...well, this might not be the one for you. With simple, vector-like play fields and no nudge mechanics, Vaporwave Pinball plays like a love-letter to ancient video pinball games from the late 70s/early 80s. Unlike those ancient virtual pinball games, Vaporwave fully wears its abstractness on its sleeve. Along with all of the usual physically impractical elements you'd expect in a digital pinball game (like Breakout-style destructible blocks and physical warps), each of the game's tables is actually 4 tables in one: reaching a win condition (mainly running the ball over a number of pulsating blocks) causes all of the table elements to despawn before being replaced by an entirely new setup. It's a neat gimmick which both adds to the replay value and helps each table feel like a living, breathing cyberspace-based organism. Described as chill by its creator, this game is dripping with aesthetic. From its beautifully defined mock operating system through to the bespoke Vapour Wave soundtrack, the whole think feels like an incredibly well crafted and integrated experience. The five table backgrounds are varied and inspired and the score sound effect - which rapidly rises in pitch as you achieve bigger and bigger combos - is immensely satisfying. My only issue is that, at times, the distinctly non-chill game play clashes a little with the rest of the experience. As great as it is to have ever-changing tables, the lack of nudge mechanics mean that you will have balls smacked straight down the center that you can do little about. On top of that, balls teleport into the play-field on their own rather than being actively plunged by the player. This means the loss of one ball can turn into a loss of three balls with alarming speed if a moving element on the field gives you a bad bounce. This isn't necessarily a bad thing by any means (in fact, it might represent a near perfect distillation of the mix of skill and luck found on the playfield of a full size pinball machine) but it does mean that someone looking for fully chilled out experience may not find the experience as relaxing as advertised. Overall though, for £4 you can't go wrong really. With the Steam library well stocked with accurate simulations of the game, Vaporwave's highly-individual take on the subject is an extremely welcome addition.
I mean... yes: the visual aesthetic and music are both vaporwave. And it does contain gameplay that can't be described as anything else but pinball. But after playing for half an hour... unless I missed something, I've hit all the depth and breadth the game has to offer.
This is simply and exactly what I hoped it would be. If you like vaporware aesthetics and you like pinball, this is for you. If I had a Steam Deck, I would be on this game all the time. It seems like it'd be perfect for the deck. I'm a pinball enthusiast of sorts, so the weird trajectory from the flippers (maybe on account of the weird pinball angles?) is offputting. Put then, because each table is so very simple and plain I can also accept that this is a design decision. (is this optional? it'd be cool if it was) Anyway, personally I really enjoy this. One of these days I'll get a Steam deck and for sure I'll play this on it.
📛Molto vapor poco pinball. Combining a neon/backroom atmosphere with a pinball: The result is not very exciting, although I expected this game from the idea with a certain originality of development after testing the demo. ❌Unfortunately the physics of a pinball ball is fundamental in a flipper, and here it is terribly disastrous so I leave to you the due considerations of how playable and enjoyable this vaporwave pinball can be. 💥Never name was more right for a video game
I'm terrible at pinball but I'm having a good time, so I'd say you did a great job! Thumbs up!
Very cool presentation & unique table design: really like how the table layout evolves as you achieve goals. As others have mentioned tho, the physics issues really hold back what could be a truly great pinball experience: even after a recent update, there’s very strange behavior when the ball comes into contact with the flippers. Sometimes the angle feels the opposite of what you intended, sometimes the ball “hugs” the flipper in a way that feels buggy. This unpredictable and odd behavior too often makes what could be a very chill and zen experience into a frustrating one. But the low price, fantastic vibe, and the dev’s apparent commitment to improving the experience make it an easy rec. Give it a try and give this indie dev the support they need to continue work on what could hopefully become a really great game!
Fine by me. Relaxing experience that we all miss since the last pinball game played during the deep childhood. Totally worthy to be spent for a couple of evenings. Especially, if you are into vaporwave aesthetics.
Just a really nice, chill pinball game. It's much less complex that the full pinball tables you'll see at your arcade but it's fun to play and chill with for a few minutes
