The previous version was way better.... I bought it for 3.99 so I will keep it, but compared to Port Royale 3, this is awful!
No, because:

Nowhere near its predecessors – feels stripped down compared to both PR3 and PR2
Turn-based combat killed the dynamic naval battles, it doesn't make you sweat
Trade system feels simpler and has less depth
Gets repetitive so fast

But:

Still a solid game on its own – just not the peak of the Port Royale series
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 25 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 10 places towards #1, and the 2,413 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Unfortunately Port Royale 2 was the peak of thee series, PR4 comes close but somehow Kalypso manages to build game mechanics and scenario "tutorials" that don't explain, don't hand hold, and are needlessly pedantic on the correct way of completing them. Locking the Campaigns behind the Spanish one is pointless. Having the Spanish one deamnd that you build businesses in specific towns, with a time limit, is daft. To the point that one popped up with "If you can't build the industry you want, buy up all businesses of another type and demolish them"......right or why don't I just build that industry in a nearby town? Oh no! I've established a massive trade network, stopped pirates, and completed 18/19 tasks. But I didn't build a big ass shipyard by an arbitrary date. Clearly a terrible administrator, failed campaign. Pointless pedantry on how they want the game played
Ive tried to like the game, and i do...but compared to PR3 this is just s shell of what it could be. battles are no longer fun. building cities in PR3 is way better and less tedious than whatever they tried to do here. ship variety could be better and combat needs a lot of overhaul to make it a core part of the game. Ill stick with PR3 on the good ol PS3. this game left me wanting so bad i broke out the old ps3 and sunk about 30 hrs into PR3 instead of aboring through this unfinished title. still an ok econ mngmt game though 4/10
Port Royale 4 has a good idea behind it, but the game does not fully deliver. The economic mechanics are solid and building trade routes can be fun, especially if you like management games. However, the graphics are poor and the management interface feels weak and clumsy. The combat system is the worst part: it is boring, repetitive, and always feels the same. After a while, battles become tedious instead of exciting. There is a good game concept here, but it needed much better execution. Overall, it is only worth playing if you really enjoy trade and economy systems.
Game is broken. It has been for a long time, so don't expect fixes.
I really wish they had a "star" rating instead of up or down, as it's not really a horrible game it's just a 3. It starts out ok, but there's a little too much to mange as you move through the game and it becomes a little monotonous . Ship Combat, although somewhat visually entertaining, isn't very good. The battle maps are way too small, the "special" abilities you have need to continually be replenished by doing missions, which would be fine if you didn't have to continually defend yourself, leaving your ability pool perpetually depleted. Making combat without being able to rest, which does happen, leaving you open to destruction by much weaker fleets. You're also limited as to the number of ships you can command which would make overcoming that rather difficult. You can offset that by gaining fame, but you're also going to lose a lot just to get there. As is also typical of games like, the enemy is not restricted to the rules of the game as far as the economics supporting the fleets are concerned. I give it a 3 becomes it's playable, but to me not worth the effort to try and overcome the stupidity factor.
It scratches a particular itch for lovers of management games - I do recommend it for those that are fans of the genre However, it feels limited. The graphics are nostalgic at best, dated at worst. Zooming in from map view to settlements is a great idea, but building feels claustrophobic as a result. Turn based battles are not my cup of tea (would have prefered a system of slower gameplay that you can pause at any second) - but for me they aren't a dealbreaker either I've gotten 17 hrs of gameplay and even though I will boot up the game from time to time, I feel like It will be mostly forgotten now. That is unless the developers add more depth and scope to the game
I dont know who came up with this game, but having three succesful Port Royale games, and then going "you know what, ♥♥♥♥ it, we will change the entire battle system and trade system", this dev team must have been hired by a competitive studio. Dear god this game sucks.
