PLAYNESE: Master Japanese

PLAYNESE has the foundation of something truly special: A Japanese learning tool disguised as an engaging game. While it's rough around the edges, the potential here is undeniable. The Good The graphics are simple but genuinely charming, creating a welcoming environment for learning. What sets this apart from other language learning games is the freedom it gives you in choosing what and how to study (specially with more plans for this in the future). Once you figure out how to access the study features (more on that below), the learning experience is genuinely enjoyable and more engaging than traditional language apps. The developer's passion shines through, and having spoken with them directly, I can confirm they're not only ambitious but genuinely receptive to player feedback and willing to implement changes where feasible. The Not-So-Good The biggest hurdle is the confusing onboarding experience. Essential instructions are buried in a note inside your house that's easy to miss entirely. While most games suffer from overly hand-holding tutorials, this game desperately needs more guidance. As a learning tool, players need to understand the purpose and proper approach for each feature to use them effectively. Several core mechanics left me scratching my head: How do I access the quizzes / learning content? What's the point of monster fighting? What's the inventory system for? Why am I cutting trees? How do I heal and get more food/items? What's cooking for and how does it work? What's the purpose of the player home? Can I skip content I'm already familiar with (like hiragana)? The Verdict Despite these issues, I'm giving this a positive review because the core experience is already solid. This game shows more promise and delivers more engaging learning than similar products on the market. Once the developer addresses the onboarding confusion and clarifies these gameplay systems, this could transform a decent learning tool into an excellent one and potentially even becoming the definitive way to learn Japanese through gaming. If you're patient with early development hiccups and are excited to watch a promising game evolve, PLAYNESE is worth your time and money. Just be prepared to experiment and ask questions while the kinks get worked out :)

I already use n5 Tango, Genki, and Migaku but this is really helping me, much to my surprise. Yeah its a little rough around the edges right now but for whatever reason I can piece things together better with this game. Between the small collection of stories, the kanji on the walls, quizzes, and music with lyrics I seem to be catching things much better than I was with just my other resources so big plus. Can't wait to see how this develops over time! 日本語の勉強、がんばってね！

this is a really fun way to practice Japanese, and it's really cute. the controls need some work, and I'm not a fan of the AI generated assets -- they're super uncanny. However, I understand that its a small passion project and I'm looking forward to seeing where this game goes.

10/10 for Japanese language learners and game is still updating. Ive almost mastered N5 soon will move to studying the N4 material in this game. Will aim to complete N2 so it will be a journey. Keep it up thanks!

This is going to be the first of many reviews. Will Edit in the future. Firstly this game has a great concept for enjoyment and learning. Overall you are doing a card battles to explore the world. To get more cards you need money, to get money you study. The scale up of enemy are great, and you can't quite just start and steam roll the game. Second the developer is hands on! We have weekly updates and you can comment at each update about what you would like to see as someone studying. It great to see some of the ideas i have had, that the developer was already working with on a larger scale. In terms of learning ability, for Beginners it is great. I am N4 moving to N3 level and I have things to do. I enjoy it for warming up and having fun before a more detailed study. Though, it may replace my detailed study as well soon, with the planned updates. I would recommend getting this game, and hopping on once a week for a fun review/run and as the content grows you will grow with it as well!

This game is gradually becoming a handcrafted Japanese learning UNIVERSE! I recommend this so, so much! There's just a tremendous amount of content to learn form and it keeps growing exponentially. The developer is fantastic, very helpful and vocal in the discord community. Really, there is a stunning amount of variety and depth to keep you coming back for more.

Iv had a chance to dig into the game and see whats here. Iv seen better... iv also seen way worse. The controls are a little rough.. it probably could have done better as a 3d or 2d game but its more of a 2.5D game. Overall, I think it could use more eyes, probably worth picking up for $8 or so when on sale.

I think this is very good idea. I will be teaching Japanese high school soon and I feel like this could be implemented in a lesson plan to some extent or even getting my students encouraged to study Japanese with this game. I do find the controls difficult, however I need to pay it more. GOOD WORK GUYS!

Don't be fooled by this software's old-school appearance, which looks like a quirky PS1 game : what you have here is an awesome project from a solo developer who releases substantial updates every week, whether it's adding new and engaging ways to review your Japanese or expanding the learning content with increasingly comprehensive material. Even if the combat and deck-building mechanics aren't what draw you in—though they provide a welcome break from studying—it's the "learning through play" philosophy that truly lies at the heart of the experience. The core of the project is already here: ready-to-use flashcards, reading and listening comprehension exercises, kanji with their meanings, and much more. This is clearly the work of a slightly crazy developer who genuinely loves what they're creating and wants to help as many people as possible learn Japanese while having fun. Playnese has every chance of becoming a reference in the genre. At the very least, it deserves a place alongside Wagotabi as one of the best ways to begin the challenging but deeply rewarding journey of learning Japanese while having fun. お疲れ様です!
