About
Planetbase is a strategy game where you guide a group of space settlers trying to establish an outpost on a remote planet.
In the game you play the role of the base architect and manager, telling your colonists where to build the structures they will need to survive. You will have to ensure that they have a constant supply of oxygen, food and water to stay alive.
You will get them to collect energy, extract water, mine metal, grow food, manufacture bots, and build a fully self-sufficient base in a harsh environment, where you are always one step away from total failure.
Even if the game is not intended to be a simulator, all the mechanics are plausible, and based on what the expected challenges of establishing a colony in an new planet would be.
Four different planets with different conditions and increasing difficulty.

Harness solar and wind energy (if available) in order to power the base's structures.
Grow hydroponic Vegetables and synthesize Vitromeat to feed your population.
Mine and produce raw resources, process them, manufacture goods, and establish a production chain.
Carefully manage the colonist immigration flow to ensure you have the people with the right skills.

Survive disasters like meteors, sandstorms or solar flares and defend your base from intruders.
Mechanize your base by creating your own bots that will help with the more arduous tasks.
Grow your colony from a few initial pioneers to a vibrant planetbase with hundreds of colonists.
Sums Steam only; PlayStation, Xbox, GOG publish no volume signal, so the true total is higher by an unknown amount.

WHAT IS PLANETBASE?
PlanetBASE is a strategy, survival colony city builder. Where you land on an alien planet with several colonists, a couple of robots and limited supplies with the task of building a space colony that'll survive the harsh climate you have landed on and thrive into a bustling colony. You place buildings, connect them with other buildings and provide the resources needed to build them while avoiding things like asteroid impacts, dust storms etc. Most importantly, you must meet the needs of your colonists, or they will die without food, water, oxygen etc. Build a spaceport to invite more colonists to your station but you most constantly keep an eye on your stations oxygen, power and water levels and make sure they can handle the increasing capacity or you will see colonists dropping like flies and lose the colony entirely.
GAMEPLAY IN GENERAL
I highly recommend you try tutorial first as this game is incredibly tricky to navigate. Similar to Madruga Works other game 'Dawn of Man', it's all about building the right buildings first and taking it gradually from there. You start with a small group of colonists in their spacesuits with a couple of robots and a landing capsule full of resources (You can recycle the Capsule for more resources). It's a race against the clock, you must quickly build an airlock to your base, followed by an Oxygen supply building, solar panels to power it and then build a water pump as asphyxiation and dehydration will get you before hunger does. Follow by building a canteen to sit and feed your colonists indoors and build accessories inside like a Food Machine to turn vegetables and meats into a meal, a tv to keep your colonists happy, a table to eat their meals and a drinking fountain to meet their thirst needs; follow up with a dorm where you add bunkbeds so you meet your colonists sleeping needs, then a battery to store power as solar panels stop working during the night, build wind turbines to harness the winds; winds fluctuate from high to no wind, so make sure your batteries store enough power when both your solar and wind are temporarily offline. Follow up with a Bio-Dome to grow food, medical herbs and starch for bio-plastic. A Medical bay and a research lab are both essential for first aid kits to heal injured colonists as injured colonists will go idle being effectively useless wandering zombies, you need a Medic to heal them. There are several types of colonist that are essential for your Colony's survival. - Workers - They work in your Mines, Operate Machinery and carry wares, the backbone of your cheap labour force. - Engineers - They Construct buildings, Repair machines/buildings/bots etc. And operate Advanced Machinery, making complex items needed for guards, bots and repairs and can carry wares. - Biologists - They ensure that the hydroponics in your Bio-Dome operate at top efficiency, giving you greater crop yields, they are essential for your colony not starving to death, and they can carry wares. - Medics - They heal your injured in the Medical Bay, they manufacture First Aid Kits and grow bio-meat in the Research Lab. Essential for not allowing your injured workers to avoid work and to grow food for the colony, so a kind of lesser Biologist/Healer, can also carry wares. - Guards - Their job is to ensure extremists that have sneaked onto your base don't cause any or too many deaths in your colony. Armed with a gun that has to be manufactured by Engineers in the Factory, they work in a Command Centre, watching CCTV cameras and responding to attacks from extremists. - Bots - There are 3 Classes of Bot (1) Carrier Bots - Their job is to carry wares to where they need to go, taking the work strain off human workers, so they can concentrate on manufacturing wares. (2) Builder Bots - Their job is to go around building things and repairing them, again, takes the strain off Engineers, giving them more time to manufacture advanced goods. (3) Drill Bots - Their job is to simply Mine, taking strain off the Workers and reducing injury as Mining makes it more likely a Worker needs medical attention. You will find yourself having to finely tune your base as more and more colonists land, your demands for power, water, oxygen and food will rise along with it; get on top of these demands early or you will suffer a colony collapse which can turn a base of 15-100 people into a giant steel coffin. Research Blueprints that will improve your base, give you better and bigger buildings for more efficiency to help manage larger colony's. You need to build a Landing Pad first for ships to land on, so you can trade goods with trade vessels that'll land, some carry technology that cost a ton of resources to purchase along with wares and bots to help your colony do all the menial tasks. Like Dawn of Man, you have to achieve all the milestones of that planet to proceed further, basically a set of goals to achieve like "Get your base to 100 Colonists" or "Make your base fully sustainable" etc. To unlock a new planet to which there is 4 to choose from all harder than the next.
USER INTERFACE
Similar to Dawn of Man, with slight changes that you have the option to build, access your milestones, whether you want traders, Colonists and Visitors to land. An alert option from yellow alert to red alert in emergencies. Not much to choose from, it's simple to understand. All are on the Hotkeys so easy to use.
CONCLUSION
- You CAN'T ROTATE BUILDINGS YOU PLACE TO BUILD!!!! I mean WTF??? This is an essential control!!! All City Builders have this most basic option as standard! Madruga's other title 'Dawn of Man' has the ability to rotate buildings, yet this does not? When you are trying to strategically place your airlock building to start your campaign? No chance! Build an Oxygen Supply Building FIRST near where you want your Airlock. Only workaround! - Game is complex up to a point, once you figure out how all the buildings work? You micromanage your air, water, food and energy needs and ensure they remain abundant in supply? You can avoid an early catastrophe by being mindful of their basic needs, then it's plain sailing from there. - Once you reach that point? The game gets repetitive. In all, it's fun at first, but it gets repetitive after a several hours of gameplay, simply have become bored of playing this game. There are far better Mars survival games out there. I hope Planetbase 2 greatly improves on this game? As I doubt I will ever play this game again, well, not for a while. A "Meh!" from me.

Planetbase is a sci-fi colony management game that challenges players to build and sustain a functioning outpost on a hostile alien world. Starting with a small crew and limited resources, you're tasked with establishing basic infrastructure—oxygen, power, food, and shelter—before gradually expanding into a fully automated colony. Early gameplay is tense and rewarding, with each decision carrying weight. You have to carefully manage your limited supply of materials, monitor your colonists’ needs, and build the right facilities in the right order to avoid catastrophe. Even something as simple as placing a solar panel too far from a power collector can lead to a deadly chain reaction if night falls and you’re unprepared. Where the game truly shines is in the early and mid-game. Every new structure—whether a biodome, mine, lab, or factory—feels like a hard-earned step toward independence. You unlock new technologies and recruit specialists through landing pads, allowing you to evolve from simple survival to a self-sustaining and even profitable operation. However, success is fragile. A poorly timed storm, power outage, or lack of spare parts can bring your colony to the brink. The dynamic weather systems, random disasters, and environmental hazards keep you on your toes and add a layer of unpredictability that fits well with the game's tone. As your colony expands, some of the cracks in the design begin to show. Colonist AI can behave erratically, ignoring vital tasks or taking inefficient paths, which can lead to preventable deaths. You might have enough medical supplies, but your medics are nowhere to be found when an injured worker collapses. Automation through bots helps alleviate this somewhat, but managing the human factor can be frustrating due to inconsistent behavior. This unpredictability isn't the result of complex emergent behavior—it often feels more like the AI simply isn't tuned properly for large-scale management, especially when things start to go wrong. Different planetary environments offer varying degrees of challenge. Each map introduces unique threats—sandstorms, meteor showers, blizzards, or intense solar radiation—forcing you to adjust your strategy. These changes add some replay value and force you to rethink your colony layout and resource priorities. Still, once you've developed a formula for success, the game can begin to feel repetitive. New buildings are often just larger versions of old ones, and technology progression doesn’t dramatically change the way you play. There’s a limited set of events and no real narrative, so once you’ve stabilized your colony, the challenge plateaus. Visually, the game is clean and functional. Structures and terrain are easy to read, with color-coded systems helping you keep track of colonists and power networks. The minimalist aesthetic works well in a management context, though it lacks the flair and personality seen in some other colony sims. The sound design is subtle, with ambient effects doing more to set the tone than the sparse music or basic audio cues. Performance is stable even during large colonies, which is impressive considering the number of moving parts on-screen during late-game operations. While the core gameplay loop is enjoyable, the lack of depth in the later stages and the AI limitations can hold it back. After a while, your colony runs itself, and challenges start to feel more like minor interruptions than real threats. There’s little incentive to keep playing beyond unlocking milestones, which serve mostly as a checklist rather than meaningful progression. A lack of mod support from the developers further limits the game's long-term potential, although some community-driven tools have emerged to extend its life. Ultimately, Planetbase is a focused and engaging base-building experience, particularly strong in its early hours. It offers a solid challenge, thoughtful pacing, and an appealing loop of expansion and risk management. However, its simplicity begins to wear thin with extended play, and its systems could benefit from more depth and polish. For fans of survival management games, it’s a worthwhile investment, especially if you enjoy micro-managing under pressure. Just be prepared for occasional frustration and diminishing returns as the novelty wears off. Rating: 7/10
An enjoyable colony sim, with reasonably deep mechanics, without being overwhelming. Easy to pick up the basics with a high skill ceiling.
крутая игра моего детства
Came to this store page when I saw the announcement for Planetbase 2 and noticed that the recent reviews are mixed, which is undeserved imho. Planetbase is solid game, where building your base requires some thinking ahead to maximize production. The game is almost 10 years old and is was the first game made by this dev, and it shows in some places. But I never experienced any game-breaking bugs, which is not something that can be said for most AAA-titles these days. Also the dev continued to release updates through the years - last one was September 2024. That counts for something in my book. TLDR: Solid game. Solid dev. Deserves a better review score than "Mixed".
great game, many hours enjoyed . not to over the top! great for new players to the genre
