Top down shooter + 240 stages + controller friendly = Shoot, dash, throw objects and reverse polarity. Fast paced stages with bosses. Unlock weapons and costumes. Easy to pick up and play.
---{At a Glance}--- Physical Layer is a top-down arena shooter with light bullet-hell elements. You play as an agent tasked with aborting the launch of a stolen EMP weapon. You must fight your way through each enemy base over 240 levels. You'll face a wide variety of enemies and bosses but you have access to three abilities (a Slide Dash for dodging, a Physical Push that lets you push boxes around, and most importantly, a Reverse Polarity mechanic (a la Ikaruga (2001). You'll have to use these abilities well if you want to beat the game. ---{Graphics}--- This game has cute and stylish graphics. The unlockable skins look adorable. ---{Gameplay}--- You must fight through your way through 240 fast-paced levels with two weapons of your choosing and your three abilities (Reverse Polarity, Physical Push, Slide Dash). Mastering these abilities is paramount to success in this game. Reverse Polarity to dodge enemy bullets or create a path safe to move on. You can use your Physical Push to literally crush your enemies with boxes. Your Slide Dash can be used to dodge projectiles. If anything, I wish that Physical Push selected the object closest to the cursor rather than the object closest to the player. I also wish there was a way to customize the color of the main character's skins. ---{Audio}--- The music is neat and the main character has a cute voice to go along with it. She has lines for when you equip weapons, skins, or when you touch her. ---{Audience}--- For those who are thinking about trying bullet-hell games this might be a good first step for them. It also prove suitable for those looking for a challenge. ---{PC Requirements}--- I could run this on my laptop at 60 FPS assuming I turn down the quality of the graphics in the setting to medium. ---{Difficulty}--- There are three difficulty settings: Normal, Twoshot, and Oneshot. In Twoshot you die in two hits. In Oneshot you die if you get hit at all. Normal and Twoshot are only available initially, so you must clear levels on Twoshot if you want to play on Oneshot. You can three-star levels by beating them within 180 seconds, dying only five times at most, and simply clearing the stage. The game starts off easy, and only really picks up in difficulty once you reach the last chapter. There are several stages that begin with you immediately being shot at by enemies and that can be very annoying to deal with on Oneshot. ---{Grind}--- Beating levels unlocks weapons. Beating them on Twoshot unlocks skins. Beating all levels on Oneshot unlocks another skin. Do note however that if you initially beat a level on Twoshot, it also counts as beating it on Normal. So if you're brave, go for it! You'll skip out on grinding for all but one of the skins this way. ---{Story}--- Only the essentials here. You are an agent tasked with aborting the launch of an EMP weapon. You must acquire six abort codes across each chapter to complete your mission. That's it. I wish we got an ending scene for closure. ---{Game Time}--- I've experienced all the game content there was in this game within four hours. I got every achievement after two more hours. The difficulty levels add some replayability to the game. I played each level on Twoshot from the get-go (unlocking all but one of the skins as mentioned earlier), then cleared each level on Normal to three-star them. (Do note that three-starring all levels is completely optional to unlocking Steam achievements. I only did this for peace of mind on my end). I then beat each level on Oneshot to get that last Steam achievement and the last unlockable skin. ---{Price}--- Not a bad deal for $10 dollars. If you want to wait for a sale to come by, sure but even at full price this is not a game you'll regret picking up. ---{Bugs}--- I've only ran into it once, but I once had an enemy stuck outside the map on a level. I just died then restarted the level though. ---{Overall}--- Overall, Physical Layer is a neat little game that I would recommend. If you want some fast paced, light bullet hell action that also rewards creative tactics, this might be the game for you.
Fun little game. The goal is a simple search and destroy. Unlocking weapons and player skins along the way. Satisfying gameplay either shoot it, throw it or using environment to your advantage. Each chapter has its own theme and gimmick and the dev isn't afraid to had fun with the player using these. Difficulty starts to rev up later stage of the game and yet it doesn't wall any content behind perfect completion. Cute style.
Fun gunplay with some unique mechanics I've never seen in a videogame before. Guns feel nice, anime women are cute, 9/10 especially given the low price. Really wish more people knew about this game!!
If john wick was an anime girl
Sliding Block Physics Simulator, Arena Shooter Edition!! Seriously, this is a super fun arena shooter where you can either shot, reverse the enemy's bullets or use the big sliding blocks to your advantage, almost like in Star Wars! The presentation and UI is clean, well executed and offers that "cute professionalism" with a excellent difficulty curve. If there are any nit-picks, it desperately needs a button remapping option, better aiming (especially for readjusting the blocks!) and adding the extra time before each round towards when you retry said round. Oh, and the plot is just there, which is par for the course in typical action "plots." :P
