Painter Simulator is a relaxing and creative experience that's all about painting. Progression is light, with new tools like airbrushes, rollers and even paint bombs, they're simple but charming, and the little animations are a lovely touch. It's perfect for the creative and the pressurised.
Introduction:
Painter Simulator is... not what you would expect at all, judging from the trailer and the game's description. Sure it isn't exactly lying nor telling the truth it's really just telling you what's possible but not what to expect: "Paint whole world" Yeah, 3 levels you can play sandbox style the rest is just filling the triangles to gain points! "Use cool guns" Yeah, they can be UNLOCKED after you gain said points! It's also a weird mix of Coloring Pixels and Powerwash Simulator which is exactly what the Developer tries so damn hard to emulate but ultimately misses the mark completely and caters this bizarre niche to the people. While it's a fine idea on paper the actual execution is poor and delivers nothing but pain to the player painting all these badly UVed models that were clearly not made to be painted over. To put that in perspective; the level with the scarecrow was the absolute worst! Overlapping triangles after another and clearly impossible if you don't have the right guns unlocked. It got out of Early Access in 14 September of 2023, but still has such little content to offer.
Gameplay:
I usually check the controls before playing the game and I saw F for flying, this brought some questions because it just doesn't work when playing a level. Later on I discovered that SOME levels have the option that you can press F to fly to paint hard to reach spots. Press R to use hints and let me tell you; a 50% opacity warning sign on the spot that still needs to be painted correctly isn't working for me, buddy! Painter Simulator also has a few modes that aren't exactly mentioned within the game or description other than vagueness like: "Take the challenge" or "Join the adventure" in the trailer.
Story missions?:
There's this bizarre Developers choice of story missions, combined with cutscenes that take way to long to actually finish. Afterwards pauses the cutscene to reveal the next part of models that need to be repainted and play said cutscenes further. Right... very strange, never seen before, I didn't like.
Timer missions:
There's also a level that has a timer, paint the pizza ingredients before the timer runs out, finish 1 piece? The timer rests and the next ingredient reveals. What's so weird about this is that there's just 1 level with a timer mode... why? Why not go ham with this idea, why just 1 level? 1 level does not cut it! Hey, I made a pun...
Sandbox:
3 levels are completely yours to color whatever you like, first off; boring color selection. Second; This is what bugs me, this was most likely a marketing piece to let people know that "Paint whole world" shtick counts for the consumer of the product total freedom, which isn't the case. It's a total disappointment*!
Skill tree:
Based on the points you'll receive 1 point PER filled triangle; It's not impressive at all, it's the obvious gun unlock and afterwards you can get ammo and refill upgrades. I can give a "quick rundown" on what the skill tree has to offer: TOOLS: -(50) Airbrush: Has the most obnoxious and expensive upgrades in comparison to the rest and adds little to nothing good. The base spread is thin and the upgrades makes the spread bigger. It's a fair gun for tiny triangles but a pain in the ass for the bigger ones. -(1.000) Bombs: Funny how painters call their tools that way, isn't it? It's a great way to get to the aforementioned overlapping triangles. It has a good spread and helped a great deal of levels that were a pain to complete... I'm looking at you scarecrow! -(5.000) Hose: Weakest hose you could ever see in a video game let alone real life that is... it has one advantage that the other guns don't have and I'm in all seriousness unsure if it's intentional but the watery paint blobs that comes out the hose can sometimes have a mind on their own and fall down the "canvass" bringing small chunks of unpainted areas with them. Other than that it's usefulness falters quick. -(8.000) ROCKET Launcher: *coughs* ...yes, that's what it's called in game. So the PAINT launcher is a more useful, expensive and better alternative for Bombs with a much greater area of spread. -(10.000) Spray: *chef's kiss* The best one of the bunch and for obvious reasons the most expensive. So here's why: You can use not 1, not 2, not 3, but use ALL the color that's available in the level (that's in the color wheel) and paint the models within reach and acts just like the Hose... but better. This tool also DESTROYS THE WHOLE PREMISE OF THE GAME! It makes the game WAY TO EASY to get the job done within minutes instead of hours! And I mean, sure it all sounds amazing that the Spray helps you not pick a color for one. But get this; Powerwash Simulator doesn't have a vacuum that sucks all the dirt and grime in front of you and Coloring Pixels doesn't have a paint bucket like Microsoft's Paint has to do the work for you! It should still be YOU that would be satisfied after a job done! MISCELLANEOUS: -(1.000) Triangle Multiplier: Definitely NOT worth it! IF fully upgraded for what it's worth in total; (18.000) that's 0.5x extra you'll get a maximum of 1.5x which is outrageously bad. Lay your focus on one of the guns instead of this... POWERS: -(5.000) Rain: A rain cloud follows you for a short time and helps you paint. Upgrades are; more colors of paint instead of the selected color and one final upgrade is more "intense" rain. Didn't use it at all... honestly a very mediocre power though its description makes it sounds so powerful.
Conclusion:
Love it or hate it, but certain things just doesn't mix well together. This game has no replayability whatsoever, nor do I recommend you to buy this game if you're interested in THE GAME. I only recommend it for Achievement Hunters but then again, they can stay in their cabin even for this snorefest game. Spend money either on Powerwash Simulator or Coloring Pixels and not on this.
2 / 10:
"Now I can watch all this paint dry."
Despite all the unfavourable reviews, I decided to get this game (since it was on sale). I thought a little painting by numbers would help me relax - and I've played PowerWasher so much that starting all over for a sixth time seemed excessive and so I wanted something new. However, this game is not at all relaxing. It is so... blocky and just too much work to paint. I had hoped the painting would be more simplified and less of a hassle, but alas it is just not the chill game I was hoping for. I'm hoping for the best and that the devs would improve this game. Maybe try a normal 2D paint by numbers design (because even that would be more satisfying).
Great concept but poor execution. Sometimes you'll be stuck at the end of a level with no idea what you're missing. If you're looking to satisfy the feeling that power wash simulator gives, this may hold you over on a rainy day. Entire story can be beat in about 5 hours, maybe faster depending on which upgrades you choose. I would wait for more updates before purchasing.
