9/10 Brukel is an exploration game reliving the memories of a grandmother told in her own voice. Haunting, beautiful, and extremely memorable. My takeaway: Brukel was a beautiful gameplay experience. It’s a first person exploration game where you traverse an old home of your grandmother in an abandoned home, all voiced by the woman herself as she retells stories. The gameplay itself was smooth and in my time playing it I encountered no bugs. The main mechanic is the player taking photos of objects followed by stories being told of the object. It left such a strong impression on me and was done in a way that was tactful, informative, and memorable. I’ve cried for this grandmother and her experience surviving through World War II. It took me ~2 hours to fully complete this title with all achievements. No cards. I only wish the artstyle and recorded voice was a little crisper. Some parts of the game were much more detailed than others but even with the lackluster art, the story was enough to keep me hooked from start to finish. Pros

Amazing concept and implementation.
Voiced by the actual grandmother telling the stories.
A love letter to the developer’s grandmother.
Easy to pick up, smooth gameplay.
Challenging.
Thought provoking.
Haunting.
Extremely memorable.
Achievements are easy enough to achieve.
I cried.
Cons

A little rough around the edges.
Some of the recorded lines were low quality. Brukel is a passion project that offers a window into the life of someone from a diminishing generation. The game is full of real anecdotes from the subject herself about the experiences she went through. This is all, of course, in her native tongue, but thankfully there are a variety of caption options available for those who wouldn't understand it based on the audio alone. You could view this game is somewhat of an interactive interview with accompanying visuals. It isn't meant to be a true "scary game" or anything of that sort, though you might be startled at a moment or two...but overall, I would not say there is much to worry about. Of the negative reviews I have read, it seems some folks may have just not gotten the premise here, and went in with some differing expectations. So, again, this is an amateur game developer's tribute to their grandmother through the preservation of her personal experiences through the medium of this game. Frankly, the minor imperfections here are worth forgiving, and not worth fussing about. I find it interesting to hear these stories in her own words, and be able to walk around this recreation of her home. This game is a little glimpse of every day history for folks, which is often overlooked in favor of the broader views. I recommend giving this one a fair shot, especially given the decent price. If you are interested in history, and hearing about the lives of people who lived it, then you should have a good experience with this game.
This game is a short walking simulator (mostly) about the experiences of a WWII survivor. It is a story of a home haunted, not by ghosts but, by memories. At 90 minutes, it's still a better buy than most movies.
probably good if you take time to learn the lore but i was bored. worth it if on sale tho
My wife said if this review gets 50 likes and 5 awards, she will buy a case of beer, guys help me out.
Brukel... I am a Greek living in the Nederlands and i am amazed what a big part of worlds story we have missed. In our schools we get taught about the world wars but... we didnt have much to do with it as Greece. Living in the Nederlands i got the opportunity to study that see the atlantic wall see the atrocities comitted by the germans. This game is a really nice insight of what life was for that generation. Thank you for taking your time to interview your grandma a person who went through war death and still says the stories with a nostalgic smile on her face. Thank you for sharing this story! 10/10
