The year is 1983. The world teeters on the verge of destruction as the Cold War tightens its icy grip. East or West: trust no one, question everything. The fate of humanity rests in your hands as you pit spy versus spy in tactical Phantom Doctrine.

I've been bitten by the Phantom Doctrine bug, and I have zero regrets! (Well, except for maybe that I wish i spent a little bit more time reading the games handbook before going wild on missions). So do you like XCOM?- It's essentially XCOM, but instead of aliens, you've got spies/gangs (Yakuza, KGB, etc.). Graphics aren't terribly fancy, but aren't bad either- I think it suits the game just fine. The only annoying thing I have found so far is every now and then the game gets hung up on the enemy turn, typically if there's a civilian or environmental area near my character and it gets locked up on the logic and won't progress to the next stage. That's only happened to me a handful of times, and thankfully there are plenty of auto-saved sections to load from. A very brief non-spoiler run down: you will have access to an infirmary, workshop, investigation board, a map to disperse agents around the globe, research board, experimental section -- just imagine all the different possibilities this could add to your game play & as you can imagine there are a lot of different ways to achieve your end goal on each level.

If you're into turn-based squad-level games (XCOM being the archetype), this will scratch the itch. It has some fun little spy-like things to do, and a light base building aspect, but it's not as extensive as XCOM. The combat is slightly different than XCOM since there isn't a percentage chance to hit which is replaced by an awareness system that allows some dodging with a replenishing awareness gauge. The usual things you can expect are here like fog of war, line of sight, armor, movement grids, and grenades of various types. A big difference is that you can usually avoid combat altogether if you've prepared properly, which is this game's version of a stealth archer. Jumping through windows somehow isn't suspicious, but having this infiltration phase (before an alarm is set off) is a fun change of pace, IMO. It's not quite as polished as the new XCOM, but for turn-based squad-level combat with a world map overlay, it's solid. 7/10, would recommend.
=)
If you are a fan of turn based strategy games look no more - this is one of the best games ever made. Gonna love every hour you play! <3
A cool spin on the XCOM genre, we need more games like these
It's a very high-quality turn-based game. It's similar to XCOM, but it incorporates a spy theme and the political climate of the 80s.
