I went into this game expecting XCOM experience but with Cold War era spies. Here's what I experienced: - For a game that came out after XCOM and XCOM 2 it has worse graphics and the operatives look as if they belong in a game from 2002. Customization is laughable with very limited options. - You got twice if not triple the actions an operative can do but they are all grouped in such a weird and clunky way. Actions such a Stabilize for example being there when...there's nobody to stabilize. Why? Place for me only the actions that can be applied. - Game says "concentrate on stealth" ...Fine, the stealth when it was there it was good. But when you end up in a mission that starts with an ambush tell me in your infinite wisdom how am I supposed to concentrate on stealth then? - The shootouts are just plain designed to make you ragequit, no amount of save scumming can save you. You enter a fight, ambush or otherwise - kiss those operatives goodbye from the getgo. - Why in all that is holy on some weapons require not just a shoot action but also costs a MOVE action?! Whose "bright" idea was this? Move actions is for MOVING, shoot actions is for...you guessed it...SHOOTING! Who brought this as an idea and all got "Yeh...that's a good idea!"? Dumb gabagool. - I may not be a game designer but I proud myself to be pretty grounded when it comes to common sense so riddle me this why does it show me it has a cover system (similar to xcom) and it doesn't work at all?? If it's not implemented why is it even there? Only visually exists to give me some false sense of hope. No matter what, even in full cover, guaranteed damage? And here comes the worst and biggest offender of them all which made me "That's it, f u!"- Enemies shoot and hit you from across the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ map and I...cannot? WTF is this bs? My guy was shot by 3 enemies from the dark edges of the map, from full health to a literall spit of health and when my turn came - no enemies in range? Ex-efin-cuse me?!? They tried to reinvent the wheel with this one and as AngryJoe's famous quote : You done ♥♥♥♥♥♥ it up! The problem isn't lack of strategy, the problem is game mechanics designed to make a masochist out of you as I've already seen that happened with a bunch of people who are basically on the bandwagon of friendlier way saying "git gud kid". Naaah nah. You wanna be a masochist that's your choice, I'll move on to something else that doesn't actually punish me for the fact that I want to have a good time. I am not talking about "I only want to win, I die in game and game bad" no. The very least as a gamer I want more or less even playing field even if it's more upscalled against me as Xcom can be on hardest difficulty. Here in Phantom Doctrine I am rolling a rock 60degrees uphill with the whole hill covered in vegetable oil. No thanks. Even if you get this garbage for free you are still duped.
I wish I could play this game but it doesn't work on Windows anymore and the devs cant be bothered to patch it.
Was sie bedeuten? Okay. Aber was genau entscheidet, was passiert? Keine Empfehlung.
The game isn't *bad* it's just incredibly tedious. Even with the game speed maxed out, it takes absurdly long to do missions. I'm talking 30+ turns of just moving your guys through a building, not counting reloads if you die. The enemy turn timers are just way too long and there are so many animations that it just bogs down the game. And that's only when you're controlling 2 units. It takes even longer on the larger missions where you have upwards of 4. Not to mention that combat doesn't really work at all since enemies very regularly will place themselves in locations where they clearly have no LoS to you and then proceed to shoot you directly through a wall. The concept here is great, and the stealth gameplay isn't too bad, it's just a shame that the game is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ slow.
Phantom Doctrine is one of the most underrated strategy games out there. If you’ve ever played XCOM and loved the tense, turn-based battles, this game takes that formula and gives it a cool Cold War spy twist. Instead of fighting aliens, you’re running a secret spy agency, pulling off covert operations, and dealing with conspiracies straight out of a thriller. The espionage theme is what makes it stand out. Your agents aren’t just soldiers—they’re spies. You can disguise them, infiltrate enemy compounds, and even brainwash captured enemies to turn them into double agents. Missions aren’t only about brute force; you can sneak around, use silenced weapons, and escape without triggering alarms. That variety makes the gameplay feel fresh compared to XCOM’s more combat-focused style. The weapon variety is another highlight. You’ve got everything from pistols and submachine guns to sniper rifles and experimental gadgets. Because missions can play out in so many ways, picking the right gear for your agents really matters. Going in quiet with suppressed weapons feels completely different from kicking down doors with heavy firepower. On top of that, you get to choose between three different spy agencies at the start: the CIA, KGB, or Mossad-inspired group. Each one gives you a different flavor and background for your campaign, which adds a ton of replay value. Combined with the branching storylines, it really feels like your spy story every time you play. Compared to XCOM, Phantom Doctrine is less about alien tech and sci-fi spectacle and more about tension, deception, and strategy. Both games scratch that tactical itch, but Phantom Doctrine shines because of its atmosphere, spy mechanics, and the constant paranoia of not knowing who you can trust. Verdict: If you love turn-based tactics and want something with espionage, deception, and tons of replay value, Phantom Doctrine is easily one of the best games in the genre. It takes what XCOM does well and adds a layer of Cold War spy drama that makes it unforgettable. Second part when? I am waiting
