100% worth it. Pathfinder Kingmaker is a mostly faithful adaptation of the tabletop rules & adventure path. It’s a little rough around the edges, but it’s highly customizable and a story on a full-fledged saga scale. Earlier negative reviews focused on instability issues and bugs. It’s been nearly a decade, minor bugs exist, but I never experienced anything game breaking. Surprised how many negative reviews were critical of intrinsic aspects of the ttrpg or of game difficulty. You may lose some fights due to a string of bad rolls or from not bringing the right tools for the task. The “Normal” setting already provides the player an advantage, but there are Story, Easy, and Custom settings to accommodate how you want to play. At normal setting, I found the early game and late game to be tougher and often I would need to reload a failed fight to try a different tactic, adjust positioning, or swap out equipment or party members. You can definitely can get better at it once you recognize the secret is just to pay attention to the strengths and weaknesses of what you’re facing. Kingdom management/Time management are the go to targets for negative reviewers. It’s a bit of an undercooked mechanic, but it’s not as bad as they make it out to be. I like its inclusion, but it could be improved on. In any case, it can be adjusted in the settings. The ramping up of pressure and urgency at certain plot points does convey overarching themes of the narrative and make the setting a character. I think it’s fair to call Pathfinder Kingmaker’s experience uneven, but that is sort of the nature of the ttrpg too. It is front loaded with a steep learning curve, requiring some time studying the multiple classes, class features, feats, and spells. Unless playing on a lower setting, encounters will require some deliberate thinking to overcome. Most of all though, and despite the campaigns length, this was sort of designed with re-playability in mind. I played a lot of, and beat, the Beneath the Stolenlands DLC stand alone dungeon during my first playthrough and through that I discovered how fun restarting can be. Those too focused on only doing a single run or too adverse to failure will just get angry or bored. "To those possessing patience and will, all truths reveal themselves." This game is a treasure and I'll be re-rolling shortly. The End is nigh; Praise be to Groetus.
隐藏结局的必要条件居然是要我单身而且还要够舔,而小崔的恋爱优先级居然比她的还要高,其他人都可以自动分手就小崔的无法覆盖……还好2代改成认妈而不是认老婆了
There are 3 "MOST" things in this game for me: MOST content: 200+ hours to complete a single run. That's massive. MOST difficulty: EVERYTHING requires dice rolls, and somehow I'm often unlucky enough to roll a 1. Some spell descriptions aren't friendly to gamers. There are various new terms for buffs and debuffs (e.g., threat range = critical hit chance, flat-footed = ambush/surprise, etc.). MOST immersive companions: The choices you make during companion quests will be tested at the end of the game. I lost one companion because of this — sad indeed, but when I see the others "survive," there's also a sense of pride. Kingdom management is still okay, even though I didn't manage to max out all kingdom stats (not sure if it's even possible). Some buildings affect gameplay — for example, the Mage Tower allows you to teleport between cities. Last but not least, I HATE SWARM ENEMIES. EVERY SINGLE KIND OF SWARM.
It's pretty bad. example a. A random chest under a tree in an area when you are level 2 with nothing special inside casts finger of death on you killing you instantly even if you miraculously make the roll of DC 17 (at base) constitution save your character in this area is still sure to die. No context for the chest, no hallmarks of an evil mage or a liches treasure. It's just some random box you dig up under a tree. it's almost like some evil prankster mage (or programmer) decided gee it would be so funny if some random player encounters this and just DIES hahahahaha, that will be such a shock they'll LOVE THAT, it will really make the player feel the tense atmosphere of a peaceful medow where some kobolds and mitesd are squabbling, some cayotes and wolves are roaming as well, with elk prancing around, and a few more dangerous things like toads, monitor lizards. oh and further off the only other slightly off thing is a cthulhu beast, but that's relatively explained. the chest however ? NOPE, dev troll i guess. this game is the example of the DM your table top group never wants to play with, they want to remove player agency and choice, and find ways to kill you that are in no way relevent to the story or thematic. I'm all for dangerous or high stakes, or even overleveled or out of scope encounters, hell if the above chest was located in some liches or evil mages study that we an under leveled party or solo adventurer stumbled on, and we see a chest with runes engraved marred with skulls and eminating a dark auar that chills us the closer we near it, inside a liches phylactary, or magic item or some secret knowledge, THEN SURE KILL ME WITH A FINGER OF DEATH THEN AND I'M LIKE OK, FAIR I EARNED THAT. put it in some bunny rabbit happy field that's one of the first places a player goes after a turtorial? a ♥♥♥♥ you player for playing our game thanks for giving it a try but this is what we are about. no thanks, and ♥♥♥♥ you too, your games design and philosophy are the ♥♥♥♥ marred all over the pathfinder table top experience all of us already know and love from similar classics in the 90's using a similar system. since I like to play this game solo, it's just game over.
A really solid CRPG and another reminder that Owlcat knows how to write a compelling RPG. The writing is consistently strong, the roleplaying offers plenty of meaningful choices, and the main story kept me invested from beginning to end. The companions were also a highlight. They each had distinct personalities and enjoyable questlines The game does an excellent job of capturing the feeling of carving out your own kingdom in a dangerous frontier. Watching your barony slowly grow while making political and moral decisions gave the campaign a satisfying sense of progression beyond simply leveling your character. The Pathfinder ruleset never completely clicked with me, So I put it on Story difficulty for most of my playthrough and didn't spend much time engaging with the deeper combat mechanics or intricate character building. That's more of a personal preference than a criticism of the game itself, but it does mean I can't really praise or critique the combat on the same level as someone who fully embraces the system. The kingdom management was probably the most mixed aspect of the experience. I liked the idea behind it, and it added a unique layer to the campaign, but much of my time felt spent trying to catch my advisors up on their Ranks as more problems and opportunities piled onto the kingdom. Some of that was almost certainly a skill issue and it being my first playthrough. I likely didn't fully understanding the most efficient way to prioritize projects and kingdom development. Even so, there were stretches where it felt more like maintenance than meaningful decision making. Overall Kingmaker delivers exactly what I look for in a CRPG.
in addition to my 43 hours on steam, ive played 211 hours on gog. in that time, ive restarted my run several times due to bugs hard locking me. i enjoy the game, its setting, most of the mechanics, but holy f they need to fix the game. as it is now, at least what i experienced, kingmaker is nothing more than practice for wrath of the righteous and rogue trader or a tech demo. the moral system is garbage, its the most basic moral system you could make and some of the "good/lawful" choices have you killing or being rude. like they took a look at the stereotype paladin / noble and said thats exactly how we should make good/lawful. if you dont encounter soul crushing bugs forcing you to restart, the game is a lot of fun and makes a rather nice kingdom builder with story and combat mixed in. however, you should probably just buy wrath as its better. although i didnt complete it, i also didnt encounter any bug blocking process or simply annoying me.
Pathfinder: Kingmaker is a broken mess of an adaptation of a broken mess of a tabletop system. Pathfinder is fundamentally constructed with 50% strict adherence to mathematical formulae, 50% vibes, and the remainder actual consideration for balance and fun. I could write several paragraphs each complaining about feat taxes, move/standard/full actions, bonuses, enemies, and spell resistance, and I started to, but then I realized I have better things to do. I'll just say that it results in a system that is overly complicated and difficult to understand but also overly simple and repetitive to play. Then, the CRPG is full of glitches, highly questionable design choices, and cases where it's hard to tell. You can look up the Kingmaker Bugfixes mod, and it doesn't address half the bugs I experienced playing the game. The thing that tipped me over the edge and made me put down the game for good was when the Empowered Magic Magus Arcana straight-up did not function. There are things to like about the game, but to me, they cannot make up for how much of a confusing, unbalanced, buggy slog it ultimately is to play, and the pains only grow the further you progress.
I have not played any of the newer RPG's like this game. I like that you can explore anything/anywhere, but without a notification of difficulty I've walked into areas/encounters that seem to be twice my current level. To keep this review short: If you enjoy min/maxing, save scumming for the perfect encounters, and saving before you enter a dungeon to find out what's in there beforehand - this game is for you.
