If a DM subjected her table to the encounters in this game, her players would quit and they'd be right to. The story seems interesting, but I've no interest in getting kicked in the ♥♥♥♥ by the developer's inability to balance encounters for 30+ hours. Everyone says it gets better once you hit level 4-5 and your characters come online! Yeah, great, not reloading saves every encounter until I get lucky enough for the dog crap characters they give you to hit something until that happens. If you're a Pathfinder diehard and you really enjoy punishing combat, this might be for you. I LOVE Pathfinder, and I still can't get into this.
It's an okay RPG and I did see it out until the end, but it was a bit of a slog. It has a unique 'kingdom management' aspect, but this is by far the weakest part of the game. Everything about it seems meaningless. The UI is very awkward. If you're not careful with early game exploration you can very easily end up with no 'governor' for a slot, which can screw you over ability to deal with events. The only real benefit of the entire system is to be able to build towns with wizard towers so you can teleport your party to far out locations. They should have cut the whole lot and concentrated on making a better role playing game. The role playing parts are like any other D&D-style game out there on the market, and indeed it does feel like a good classic RPG experience. However I don't think the story is as strong as other games out there. I'm playing through Wrath of the Rigtheous now and that one is more captivating than this one's story ever was. I've given it a 'recommended' rating since the game does still have its moments.
They make a buggy game with hardlocks, softlocks, crashes, and a bunch of problems, and release it on Steam, and polish it with patches for years. Steam players—pay for the game, pay for every DLC. Eat what they get. They, however, release a buggy game with hardlocks, softlocks, crashes, and a bunch of problems, and release it on Nintendo Switch 2. Oh, excuse us, here are all the current and future DLC for Rogue Trader for free. Why should I pay for DLC under the same conditions as Switch 2 players, but they don't? A rhetorical question. If this is how they treat their PC audience, well, then all they get from me are negative reviews of their games, and they won't get a cent more from me. Let them make money on free DLC on Switch 2.
Bought this ages ago after watching a Mandalore review and never got too into it from the character creator being a bit daunting and a cave full of centipedes being annoying to the point I lost all interest in it. After beating Rogue Trader and playing the Dark Heresy beta I figured I'd give it another go since I liked those so much, and man if it wasn't one of the most miserable experiences in an RPG I've ever had right out of the gate. It might be one of those "like 5 hours in it really gets going" games but I can't make it past the first few encounters. It's like I'm playing *Miss* simulator and when stuff does actually hit the results are pitiful especially starting as a caster. Rerolled the same sorcerer but with higher Dex and starting skills that increase hit chances and still every encounter it's literally 2 sides rotating misses until something connects with the force of a wet fart or Amiri wins the powerball and one shots them. Probably the most tedious combat system I've ever dealt with in a turn based game. I've heard a lot of combat revolves around buffs and "muh D20" but you shouldn't need to pop actual spells that require a rest to replenish or chug potions to deal with 3 rusty sword bandits in a video game. I don't expect or want to start the game as an OP arch lich chosen one that one shots the screen but I also don't expect or want every character to be functionally blind quadriplegics unable to function without shooting up magic tren. Also having a permanent stat debuff until rest because a spider breathed on a character or they stepped in monitor lizard piss is nuts. Game feels like it forces you to waste time both in universe and IRL at every corner. The story seems fun and despite every saying how iff the kingdom management system is it feels interesting. But if feels like I'm trying to find a gold nugget under a 20ft stack of tax forms and paperwork.

I would recommend this game, even when I ended up fed up with it. 2 attempts, where first with my own character builds up to level 6 or so, and a 2nd attempt with character build I found online up to level 9 or 10. The main reason why: it feels very slow, with too many interruptions. What I mean with that: For me there was just too much down time. Basic movement speed on the world area's feels slow. When click a large distance away from your characters, they start running. This movement speeds feels 'good enough'. However, when you make a small adjustment to where you need to move and you are within a certain range the character start walking, significantly dropping their movement speed. This aspect of the movement system I found very, very annoying. Then there is the overworld map, which also features somewhat slow movement from point A to B, and breaks the flow for needing to rest at campsites or managing rations at vendors. I understand it's part of the time maangement aspect within the game, which sets the pacing of how the story escalates. I just don't enjoy it. Then there is the kingdom management itself, which requires your party to be in certain area's of the map around certain times. If you don't know those locations ahead of time because it's you first play through, I felt like I'm wasting time sometimes going back and forth between what I wanted to do, and what the game was telling me I should do or face the consequences if I ignore it. Or needing to wait for '2 weeks' of time to spin by are you doing a kingdom upgrade. Or there is some worthless random encounter of 3 weak sauce kobolds that get one hit and then you proceed. After having experienced 1 loading screen, and getting rewarded by another loading screen back to the map. In their own right, they are all quite interruptions to actually playing the game, or experiencing the story or exploring something. But they add up and build up my frustration over time slightly more and more and more. Combat in this game is quite brutal, even on easy. My first attempt was with my own characters. I've played D&D before, as well as Pathfinder, so I was a bit familiar with how to make a character. I chose a decent mix of support, DPS and tanky characters, sticking to the classes I chose and oh my word... my team often got messed up by some encounters. Had I not played on easy, I probably had to go back to previous saves way more often in hopes of better rolls. The 2nd attempt I took some build from people online, and combat felt so much more smoother. Those builds were multi-classing to get additional early attack and damage bonuses and the difference felt like having 2x the damage output and 1.2x better defences. It seemed that 'normal difficulty' was built with these 'optimized' builds in mind, which is as shame. I would have liked to just play through with characters of my own creation, but my character building skills are no-where near what this game demanded of me :P Playing someone else's characters was fine, just less engaging for me. I like that some of the story parts had voice acting and I appreciated the quality of those people doing the voice acting. The story was... okay? It didn't really hook me in. The main premise is about being granted a title with land, to basicially grow your empire. And over the span of time, problem arise that you need to deal with. And I just didn't really care much for it. There seemed to be an overarching plot tying those problems together, but it was a bit too vague for me to really care about. As for the kingdom building, I don't think I played far enough for the things that I did to matter. And maybe, that would have remained even after going up to level 20 or whatever the levelcap in this game is? I honestly don't know. I like city building games, I like playing tile based games with adjencency optimization puzzles and the town building is having those aspects. But the resources available to you seemed to have been scarse. I already planned out my main town, and was only able to build maybe 1/3 of it with the available resources in the 2nd playthrough... and I didn't really notice anything positive for doing all that effort. Kind of felt wasted. I think this game really caters to people who like theory crafting their D&D characters and optimizing the hell out of them. I believe for those people, this game offers a nice environment for character building and testing their builds in. For people who love story driven RPG's or atmostpheric RPG's, like I tend to do, I'm not convinced this game will be to their liking. May be more hit or miss for those people, and for me it was sadly a miss. Some of the characters you meet at memorable and fun. I like the bard, the 'villain' gnome at the start, and the barbarian and alchemist gnome. Also a troll that tried to be peaceful with humans, and some forest sprite who I'm not sure if she's who she says she is... Maybe, I'll give this game another try after some time. Maybe my mindset has changed and the pacing of the game then better suits me. And maybe, that'll mever happen. I can definitely recommend you to give this one a try if you think this game is for you!
100% worth it. Pathfinder Kingmaker is a mostly faithful adaptation of the tabletop rules & adventure path. It’s a little rough around the edges, but it’s highly customizable and a story on a full-fledged saga scale. Earlier negative reviews focused on instability issues and bugs. It’s been nearly a decade, minor bugs exist, but I never experienced anything game breaking. Surprised how many negative reviews were critical of intrinsic aspects of the ttrpg or of game difficulty. You may lose some fights due to a string of bad rolls or from not bringing the right tools for the task. The “Normal” setting already provides the player an advantage, but there are Story, Easy, and Custom settings to accommodate how you want to play. At normal setting, I found the early game and late game to be tougher and often I would need to reload a failed fight to try a different tactic, adjust positioning, or swap out equipment or party members. You can definitely can get better at it once you recognize the secret is just to pay attention to the strengths and weaknesses of what you’re facing. Kingdom management/Time management are the go to targets for negative reviewers. It’s a bit of an undercooked mechanic, but it’s not as bad as they make it out to be. I like its inclusion, but it could be improved on. In any case, it can be adjusted in the settings. The ramping up of pressure and urgency at certain plot points does convey overarching themes of the narrative and make the setting a character. I think it’s fair to call Pathfinder Kingmaker’s experience uneven, but that is sort of the nature of the ttrpg too. It is front loaded with a steep learning curve, requiring some time studying the multiple classes, class features, feats, and spells. Unless playing on a lower setting, encounters will require some deliberate thinking to overcome. Most of all though, and despite the campaigns length, this was sort of designed with re-playability in mind. I played a lot of, and beat, the Beneath the Stolenlands DLC stand alone dungeon during my first playthrough and through that I discovered how fun restarting can be. Those too focused on only doing a single run or too adverse to failure will just get angry or bored. "To those possessing patience and will, all truths reveal themselves." This game is a treasure and I'll be re-rolling shortly. The End is nigh; Praise be to Groetus.
