TLDR, I'd recommend this to existing fans of Pathfinder 1e, ravenous CRPG fans, or someone feeling nostalgic for the 3.0 or 3.5 era of DnD games. However, I'd recommend Pillars of Eternity or Baldur's Gate 3 over Kingmaker for anybody. ----- This game is an adaptation of Pathfinder 1e, and is based on a series of adventures written for the tabletop game. After about 10-15 hours you defeat a bandit king, become a legitimate ruler, and start managing the land and government. Then, the game becomes a combination of kingdom management (rudimentary strategy minigame) and the tabletop-style adventuring. This makes for 100+ hours of content overall. CONS: Jank. Even in 2026, I constantly have to restart the game or reload to fix a bug with the UI or inventory systems. Items don't have the listed effects, my character won't follow combat commands, the pause button sticks, or something. A quest requires I go to a location on monday, but the game contains no calendars with days of the week. Part of your government is softlocked because you didn't visit the quest locations in the order they expected, so you have no advisor. It eventually wore me down to the point that I'm not finishing it. Mediocre storytelling. The production value is rough: bland and repetitive music, basically no voice acting, and nothing cool in terms of art and animation. There is no single throughline in terms of the plot, and I found that there's very little meaningful interaction with the companions. CRPGs will usually have very compelling main stories, or at least interesting companion stories, but there was nothing meaningful in my experience. PROS: Great sandbox elements. The quests are fairly separate, and come one after another with breaks and lulls in between. You have a lot of time to roam around. That's the case for a lot of CRPGs, but the main stories usually don't slow down enough that you really feel like you have time for exploration. Also, the way regions are levelled feels fair. The world doesn't uniformly scale with your level, but the regions have their own difficulty levels that you encounter sequentially, so there's no sudden roadblocks. It's not perfect, but kingmaker does this better than a lot of CRPGs. Pathfinder is good. The gameplay is based on Pathfinder, which (as a DnD offshoot) is the product of many decades' work with thousands of designers contributing and refining. That's not the case for most video games, and I believe it does make a big difference. Baldur's Gate 3 has a lot of possible builds, but I'd say Kingmaker might have it beat for sheer range of options.
The game takes too long to get going. The turn based mode feels tact-on. Overall the game shows promise but feels like a chore.
This game has gotten me into Pathfinder and I couldn't be happier. It takes a mostly stereotypical end point of the hero becoming the ruler of their own lands and asks "What now wise guy?". A nice touch is the fact that your barony will share your characters alignment and there are exclusive buildings depending on which one you choose. It also includes a spectacle of different options for a ton of replay-ability. Definitely give it a shot.

On it's own it might not be as bad but playing Wrath of the Righteous first then Kingmaker really highlights how much better they got at writing, level design, kingdom management, not letting fans add terrible quests and NPC's, and... well..... everything. Final Act was one of the most annoying grinds I have ever not given up on.
It's a fun game based on the Pathfinder system, with all the highs and lows that that entails.
While an old game, this game is still one of the better cRPG game you'll play. Gameplay will remind you of the old Baldur's Gate games, and the story is a bit fun. You feel the history you are helping create as you move through the story.
