William "Bill" Sherman has a problem - he's dead. Blown to pieces by his own C4 payload, which he wanted to eliminate a South American druglord with on behalf of some shady secret service people.

(This review is mixed cause even after patching it using Patch 44 and the Megafix v2 mod to fix bugs and make it less tedious it still crashed a TON and it's very clear that it's very undercooked but still plays like any ol' Painkiller. BUT only get this if you're thinking about getting the full Painkiller collection during a sale since it's NOT worth it on it's own even on discount.) Painkiller: Resurrection is another Painkiller game but if it wasn't obvious by the reception, not NEARLY as well received as the original nor even Overdose. Developed by Homegrown Games, it follows William Sherman, a hitman who gets sent to purgatory as a car bomb meant for a drug lord accidentally also killed a bus full of innocent people. As such William gets sent to Purgatory and now has to fight his way for Redemption... no that's a different Painkiller game. It's a surprisingly compelling premise that's completely wasted cause looking more into it, this game absolutely had a TON of ideas and concepts that weren't fully realized for one reason or another. Gameplay wise, the gunplay and movement is actually like what you'd expect from Painkiller, featuring all the weapons from the original game + Black Edition specifically. There is one NEW weapon near the end called Mr. Molotov. It looks like a bunch of bull$^#@ strapped together that can shoot flaming stakes for it's primary, and a gas tank for it's secondary. It works fine enough but it is literally just other aspects of existing weapons just mashedtogether in a new weapon. Now the enemies I believe are supposed to be all from the original game and Black Edition just reused BUT there's seemingly a mini-golem enemy that got swapped out with the Megafix Mod I was using to make the gameplay flow better, I can only assume the maps spam this enemy so much it becomes uninteresting, which is a interesting problem to have where you already have a gameplay loop where the same few enemy types are spammed for the level but I digress. The levels are also personally just a mixed bag, some have pretty solid combat encounters with some neat set pieces but also have very bizarre level geometry, honestly the most tedious part is again, how much it crashed despite being patched up. There's also only 6 singleplayer levels and one co-op Steam exclusive so it's not that long of a game at all, and seemingly, it wasn't supposed to be. Stylewise, even though it's on a supposedly upgraded Painkiller engine, the game still practically looks exactly how you'd expect Painkiller would look and that extents to the design in it's levels but also sometimes worse in places. But there are some genuinely really nice themes and parts to some of the levels. Some examples since it is a short game, Level 3: Gloomy Mountains has some very winding and, well, gloomy atmosphere. Actually using the big level size to it's advantage and having the paths actually somewhat feeling like how hiking paths are formed out of the existing natural architecture. And the next level, Haunted City, with it's sea-side city aesthetic with very claustrophobic level design and it's genuinely pretty neat. (if it didn't keep crashing for my play through) Looking deep into Resurrection's levels I found a ton of concept art for both the existing and tons of scrapped levels that kind give me the vibe that it was gonna be a why more interesting and ambitious game but got cut down greatly for one reason or another and that really sucks. Overall, Painkiller: Resurrection was a big ol' pile of "it's fine". It still plays like the previous games, it's just lacking in content, design, adding new significant stuff to make it standout. Even with people being mixed on Overdose, at least that game has a decent amount of levels each with a variety of themes, new weapons, enemies, etc. Though it does seem that was supposed to be the plan for Resurrection with all the unused concepts and it really feeling like it was rushed to completion. Which is a shame as both the plot and some of the existing levels do provide a interesting premise but is overall just wasted. Even with patches and fan mods to tune up the game, it still is prone to bugging out and crashing. So if you're curious I would recommend at least trying it if you're a fan of Painkiller's gameplay loop, just don't buy it solely just for Resurrection, get it on sale or in a bundle if need be.
Мусор. 1/10
Bruh, Heal system still makes you stand over dead bodies like a moron waiting for them to vanish – in a "fast-paced" shooter, that's unforgivable. Another trash heap in the Painkiller franchise. 0/10, go play actual Doom instead.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that's made by morons, constantly crashing for any reason, level design is so bad that it's really hard to just complete all 6 levels of this crap. A shame to the publishers who have stained the franchise with this garbage. 3/10
Lleno de crasheos, bugs y diseño de nivel atroz. Sufrimiento puro.
I cannot get past the first level nothing in this game works the ground will melt and objects noclip. Its kinda shocking how little this game actually works at this point its not even a game.
Exhausting. Poorly polished. Forced myself to finish E03. Got softlocked in E04 and deleted the game - don’t even wanna bother with the DirectX fix, not worth it.
