Hey, you wanna play a visual novel where you can bang your completely unlikeable coworkers? 'cause, good news! Here's your visual novel where you can bang your seriously unlikeable coworkers. On the surface this looks like a promising game. The art is shiny and appealing, there's a free R18-Patch, you can play as male or female, and there are multiple endings! Sounds and looks good, right? Only problem is, not a single character in this game is remotely likeable. Now, I can expect to recoil a little at a character's behaviour during a BAD END where I'm getting killed, but I don't understand why I'm still getting scowled at and treated poorly during GOOD ENDs. So, not only was the journey through the story unpleasant-- it was ultimately unrewarding. And even the BAD ENDs didn't quite land correctly.
Why do I get murdered for a coworker quitting in one route, but she quits in another route in almost the same exact manner and I don't get murdered? Why? Because I ordered Bibimbap once? What?
The characters felt flat throughout the entire visual novel. There were moments where Lissa occasionally felt like the writing team was having a good day, but it never lasted long. Mayu received the worst treatment, and has about as much characterization as the ramen she eats, and as a result was the least likeable character of the three. Also, as of writing this review the gallery is bugged. I went through every route and the last of Lissa's CGs will not unlock, despite me having seen it multiple times at this point. Also, the skip button doesn't work either, so I hope you like slamming the ENTER button as fast as you can to get through the flat writing. In short, consider this review my two weeks notice. I will return to collect my things and the latest achievement (which currently has an unlock rate of 0%), and will be moving on to a hopefully better office with coworkers that don't make me want to pull out my organs.
This one was a bit of a mess; a perfect example of how not to go down the yandere road. Everyone seems pretty normal at first glance, but then they can just snap or start acting really strange out of nowhere. (Like when
the protagonist pushes one of the girls down on his bed and says that he loves her, despite there being no earlier indications of that
, or when
the boss at work decides that the protagonist needs to die just because a coworker quit
, or when
two of the coworkers stab the protagonist to death in the middle of the street in broad daylight after he refused to do a live sex show on cam with 20000 people watching
, or... Well, you get it.) It's clear that the developer was trying to implement some sort of shock value, but it just comes off as desperate and feels really stupid. A few other complaints: - The character sprites and CG art don't match very well. They kinda seem like different people. For example, at one moment a character looks like this and the next, they look like this. - There are a bunch of CGs that are animated for no reason (the characters aren't actually moving in the scene) and a bunch of CGs that would make sense to animate (the h-scenes, mainly) are not. - Choices are completely nonsensical. For example, which girl the protagonist ends up sleeping with and falling in love with is literally determined based on what you decide to eat for lunch. - Some of the endings are extremely sudden. Just when things start heading in a somewhat interesting direction, BOOM, the game just abruptly ends and you're thrown back to the title menu). I honestly can't recommend this VN to anyone. It wasn't even weird in a funny way.
Disclaimer: I backed this game on Kickstarter I don't recommend it at all. The game tries to tell a messed up story, but doesn't make it engaging nor enjoyable. The girls are all awful. None of the endings feel satisfying: you either get a bad ending or date a psycho girl. There are ~10 endings and none of them feel fair. The girl you romance depends on a blind choice of what you're eating for lunch and you get a bad ending if you don't do exactly what the game wants. The music is ok. UI is good enough. CGs are fine. But the story was just so bad. It's a visual novel for goodness' sake, if the story is barely palatable, what's the point ?
I really wanted to like this game, I really did. Between the shiny, vibrant artwork that I absolutely adore and the option to play as a female for a yuri experience (with an h-patch!), it seemed like the ideal visual novel for me. But, as it turns out, appearances aren't everything and this game is hiding some serious flaws beneath its cutesy exterior. Horrible characters, random, nonsensical plot directions and faulty controls really come together to make this a subpar game that left me feeling more exhausted than anything. If a game only has three characters to choose from, they better be some pretty damn good ones to make up for it, right? Well not in Our Lovely Escape, because there was not one likeable character among the bunch. They had me fooled for a bit in the prologue and I kept telling myself they seemed alright, but as soon as I got onto Alexis' route it just went downhill from there. Normally you expect with unpleasant characters like these that they would get better the more you get to know them, like they have a soft side to them and aren't really so ♥♥♥♥♥♥ after all. Unfortunately that's not the case here, because for the most part they only seemed to get worse the further along their route you went. Each one of them is controlling, bipolar, selfish, ♥♥♥♥♥♥, and just completely insufferable no matter how nice you are to them. It legit makes me wonder if the developer of this game has some problems with their previous relationships with women or something, because this behavior is largely normalized by everyone else in the game and consistent throughout. Couldn't at least one of these girls been a decent human being? Instead all we get are three unhinged individuals who are clearly not fit for a relationship when all they can think of is themselves and their own needs. I know I'm psychoanalyzing waifus too deeply right now, but their personalities are actually the worst part of the game and left me with a bad taste in my mouth. The protagonist wasn't much better, either. She was a normal person at least, and whether she was a jerk or not also depended on your choices. But other than that she was bland and seemed to only care about her job with her ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of a boss and moody coworkers that love to cause a scene. The only times I could relate to her were in some of the bad endings or moments of clarity she had where she was like "♥♥♥♥ this girl, why would I want to date someone who acts like this?" My thoughts exactly. Other than the abysmal character development, the writing is kinda just all over the place too. The grammar and overall vocabulary and sentence flow is good, but the content itself is questionable. Things just kind of happen and the protagonist just goes with it, like, whatever, right? She takes all three of these girls home and beds them in their routes, WHILE they are drunk... Taking advantage much? Then they just decide to get clingy and be like yeah we're totally in love now, also you gotta prove your love for me in some inane way and if you don't I might just kill you. If they had advertised this game as being one for people who actually like these kinds of characters then I might not even give it such a bad review. But it goes under the pretense that this is just your normal cute girl vn, teehee. You can hardly call this romance at all, which is made all the more sad and ironic by the fact that they literally work in an office made to create romance games. Also I mentioned how the controls are faulty - that's because the skip button is garbage. There is no option for skipping read text so no matter what it skips everything, and it's hard to tell if you've already been through a certain scene or not due to this. As well as that, you can use the scroll wheel to advance backwards or forwards through dialogue you've already read, and it's broken as hell too. If you scroll too much it goes turbo speed and it's difficult to get it to stop at all, let alone where you need it to. It's just disappointing because I really do like the art, even if there are very few CG's in the first place. They are really cute and even animated, so you can tell a lot of effort was put into them. The backgrounds are all very crisp and well-made also. The H-scenes are simplistic, as the protagonist does not have a physical presence whatsoever, so it's just the girl naked and moaning. But I still can appreciate how good they looked, too. The music is nothing special, just some simple tunes that change a bit depending on the atmosphere of the scene, pretty sure there are like 3. Sadly there are no sound effects at all, which kind of just makes the sound design of this game really low effort. It says I have 5 hours on here, but it should really be more like 4, fully completed - and for a game that costs $10, that's not worth the money. 4/10, all points go to the art and the creative writing (as in banter, not plot itself), but that's it. If you want GOOD psycho characters, do yourself a favour and pass this one over.
a very good Visual Novel game. can recommend it. some answer options. cutel girls. some cool clothes to see. a couple of hot moments, everything is uncensored what do you want more. has a cool gallery. has steam cards. all achievements work.
The tl;dr is if you absolutely must, catch it on sale. If you're undecided, there are better stories with reasonable twists and characterization to them. The content warnings are vanilla sexual situations, exhibitionism, and threat of public exposure. I'd have to summarize this game as "subtlety of a bull in a fine china shop". Its potential is there, but it's almost-immediately scattered by the heavy-handed writing style that makes every single character not so much a character as a collection of unstable or outright psychotic traits. There are also endings, swings in the narrative progression, and decisions made by the cast that lead me to believe first the conclusion was written, and then the characters were squeezed into that pathway in order to fit the roll needed of them. It'd be harder to explain without breaking into spoilers, but I have to say on a technical level it makes it hard to believe actions taken in the story routes in the game's own logic. It was a trip to read, but I can't see myself taking a second visit to it. School Days is over there if you have a hankering for almost-absurd twists in story & plot.
Our Lovely Escape... Where do I even begin with this one? What can I even say that hasn't been said before? How do you create the perfect sandwich? Why in one route the released game is full of bugs on release but on another it's a perfection? Why am I doing an introduction asking so many questions that aren't going to be answered later on? Our Lovely Escape is a visual novel (with a free hentai DLC at that) with characters people love to hate. I don't even remember the names of them, just the whole 'thing' they had...
"There's the boss that's both a childhood friend and secretly a cam ♥♥♥♥♥, there's the shy, perfectionist that is mentally unstable, actually they're all mentally unstable when you think about it..."
I personally prefer good writing over characters, because if the plot is good enough I don't care if the characters are [Insert political figure you hate here], I'll keep playing. Sadly Our Lovely Escape's plot has... Less than ideal standards... And don't get me started on the endings... That's a can of worms I do not wanna open right now... The hentai itself is... Acceptable, if you choose to ignore the fact the tit size's change from 'Medium on the character sprites' to "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, DO YOU HAVE MAGICAL ROUGE POCKETS IN THAT BRA?" on the hentai... I want to like the game... I do... I want to say "It's worth if it's on sale!" when it really isn't... If you're looking for simple game to increase your average achievement percentage go for it... Get an auto-clicker and pull up a guide... Cause that is the single thing this game achieves, being a number buried in a bigger percentage... Hell, the characters are so unlikable I didn't finish all the endings cause I didn't want to put myself through that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Here I am, reviewing a hentai game on the internet... Personally, if you took the characters on paper and put them in a setting where the plot is catered to making you hate them, that could work. Having the whole theme being "I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hate all of them." as it. But what do I know? I'm just some British guy with a keyboard on the internet.
