This is a very enjoyable RPG. The fights are fun, though they tend not to be too challenging on easy mode. (They still can get challenging real fast if you make a mistake. I intend to play this again on normal mode.) The best part is the dialog. The heroine is incredibly sarcastic, selfish, and quick to unleash her sarcasm on friend and foe. I only paid $0.69 for this game, and Onyx is more than worth it at that price.

I got this game on Humble Bundle for 56¢ and do not regret it. 6¢ went to a charity of some kind. No, I did not check which one. It's exactly as sprawling and convoluted as the 90s Final Fantasy games were, so if you could handle those, you can handle this. Not great, graphics quite redundant; but manageable for its story.
Onyx by Valkyria Games is a classic-style role-playing game that embraces the familiar structure of RPG Maker adventures while attempting to distinguish itself through personality, scale, and a steady sense of progression. It presents a traditional fantasy journey on the surface, but its strength lies more in how it delivers that journey rather than in reinventing the formula. From the beginning, it feels like a deliberate throwback to older RPG design, prioritizing exploration, character interaction, and gradual development over innovation. The story follows Rowan, a solitary and often irritable witch whose life is disrupted when an important heirloom tied to her past is stolen. What starts as a straightforward personal quest slowly expands into a broader narrative involving hidden truths and larger forces at work. Rowan’s personality plays a major role in shaping the experience, as her blunt, sarcastic attitude contrasts with the more typical heroic archetype. This gives the dialogue a distinct tone, adding moments of humor and character-driven interaction that help carry the story even when the plot itself follows a familiar trajectory. Gameplay is rooted in traditional turn-based combat and exploration, offering a structure that will feel immediately recognizable to fans of the genre. Battles are simple to grasp, relying on standard mechanics such as skill usage, resource management, and basic strategy. While the system is functional and consistent, it does not evolve significantly over time, which can lead to repetition during longer sessions. The focus remains on accessibility rather than depth, making it easy to engage with but less likely to surprise players looking for more complex combat systems. Exploration is one of the game’s more engaging aspects, with a large world that encourages players to search beyond the main path. Hidden areas, optional encounters, and numerous secrets are scattered throughout the environment, rewarding curiosity and attention to detail. This design adds a sense of depth to the experience, as players are not simply moving from one objective to the next but are instead uncovering additional layers of content. The inclusion of side activities and optional discoveries helps extend the game’s lifespan and gives players a reason to revisit areas they might otherwise overlook. The overall length of the game is substantial, offering a lengthy campaign that can occupy many hours, especially for those who choose to explore thoroughly. This sense of scale is impressive for an indie RPG, but it also introduces pacing challenges. While the early portions maintain a steady and engaging rhythm, the later stages can feel stretched, with repeated gameplay loops that do not always introduce new ideas. The balance between story progression and gameplay can occasionally feel uneven, particularly when extended sequences of combat or exploration slow the narrative momentum. Visually, Onyx adheres to a familiar pixel-based style that reflects its RPG Maker origins. The environments are functional and easy to navigate, while character sprites and occasional illustrated scenes add personality to key moments. The presentation is consistent, though not particularly striking, focusing on clarity rather than visual flair. This approach works within the context of the game, but it may feel dated compared to more modern RPGs. The audio design supports the experience without drawing significant attention to itself. The soundtrack provides appropriate background music for exploration and combat, helping to maintain the overall tone without becoming a standout feature. Sound effects are straightforward, reinforcing gameplay actions without adding much depth to the atmosphere. One of the more distinctive elements of Onyx is its use of humor. The dialogue often shifts between serious and lighthearted moments, giving the game a tone that feels more relaxed than many traditional fantasy RPGs. This approach adds charm and helps differentiate the experience, though it may not resonate equally with all players. For some, it enhances the character interactions, while for others it may feel inconsistent with the broader narrative themes. Despite its strengths, the game does have limitations that reflect its reliance on established mechanics. The lack of innovation in gameplay systems means that it rarely surprises, and the repetition inherent in its structure can become noticeable over time. While the world is expansive and filled with content, not all of it feels equally meaningful, which can affect long-term engagement. In the end, Onyx is a solid and content-rich RPG that succeeds through consistency rather than originality. It offers a lengthy adventure with a memorable protagonist and a world that rewards exploration, even if its mechanics remain firmly rooted in tradition. For players who enjoy classic RPG Maker experiences and are willing to embrace a slower, more methodical pace, it provides a satisfying journey that delivers exactly what it sets out to offer. 没有中文,你就是最终幻想20来了也是差评。we need chinese.
