It is about a knight who had a wild night at his buck’s party; he was drinking like there was no tomorrow, and when he wakes up with a terrible hangover, he needs to get back to his bride-to-be. But here is the big question, how on earth did he end up in Egypt? From what he vaguely remembers, he was in a medieval castle in France at the start of the festivities and then . . . a big blank! Now, with a liver in taters, he has to retrace his steps of the previous night for the right to marry his bride. It is a crazy story about One Drunken Knight. One Drunken Knight is a comical 2D Platformer with some puzzle elements developed and self-published by Professional Imagination on the 24 of November 2022 on the Steam platform. First, I would like to congratulate the developers for this extraordinary, unexpected, fun game, One Drunken Knight. I don’t think they were tipsy when they put the game together, as the creativity is just brilliant, the level designs are fun and colourful with enough difficulty, and they are the right length too. The soundtrack is another great touch where I had several laugh-out-loud moments, which I will explain below. And the combat is simple but just crazy, which makes it even more enjoyable. You might struggle with a few aspects of the game, however, one of which is the combat, and the other is how the game is presented. So, here you are. Your tipsy knight must complete 23 levels to be reunited with his bride-to-be. The game presentation is really fun; you are having a night at the theatre. As you start the game, the curtain will rise, and the audience will be excited and make noises. That is also part of the creativity of the game, as your knight meets new characters throughout the game, engaging in combat with a vast number of enemies or even patting animals, the audience will react, which I think is just great. The dialogue is as funny as it can be. It is a bit of a dark comedy, but it will give you a few smiles and l some laughs along the way. The aspect I had a bit of trouble with was that I could not play the game for more than a couple of hours at a time as I needed to take a break due to its presentation. Everything moves all the time as if you’re drunk, and it feels like you are seeing double; it’s subtle, and that is done on purpose, but for me, I needed to have a few breaks between sessions. Some people will be fine with this, and others, like myself, will need to take breaks. So, your knight will have two types of attacks: sword and kick. He can jump and block attacks too. On some levels, he will need to move wooden boxes, activate a switch or even melt ice cubes, and all of these are done by tapping a kidney (doing a pee) on the objects. But what our knight needs to worry about is his liver tolerance. You see, your knight needs to keep his liver tolerance high, otherwise he will die. You can collect livers by patting animals or other little cuties, and also by killing an enemy, at which point he will drop a kidney for you. In fights, you’ll lose liver tolerance every time you get hit, and when the gauge hits zero, you die. If you haven’t reached a checkpoint, which is where you can “kick a bucket” (actually physically kick a bucket, not die) and it will save your progression, you’ll have to start the level from scratch. You have 11 power-ups which you can activate by drinking 10 shots of your favourite drink, such as tequila, cognac, wine etc. As you progress through each level, you’ll find trees with glasses suspended, just like fruit. And when you collect 10 glasses of the same liquor, the power-up will start, and it will last for around 20 seconds or so. Each liquor will have its own colour, but if you mix the beverages, your knight will become sick and vomit all over the floor. The good news is that this triggers some sort of power-up, but the downside is that your knight will be immobile for a little while. Yes, it will damage your enemies, but it can also be fatal to your knight if his liver tolerance is low. As I mentioned above, I had some great laughs playing this game. The first one occurred when I activated the Schnapps power-up for the first time. The music of El Bimbo started, and I, the knight, was dancing the tango with one of the bosses, and I had to keep the duo under a projector light. My first thought was the iconic and funny scene in the Police Academy movie when the two cops were lured into the Blue Oyster bar. And surprise, surprise, the power-up is named the Blue Oyster Bar. The next one was where our knight needed to cross the ocean by ship. There, you have to destroy giant plastic cups by shooting cannonballs with a skeleton sitting on top accompanied by the music of the Love Boat. I had plenty of giggles; what a fun game! One thing bugged me while playing the game which I think the developers need to look at. It is when you die without being able to “kick the bucket”. You see, the dialogue is presented as a book. When the dialogue is on, well, the first couple of times is ok as you might have missed a few things. But when you die a few times thereafter, skipping the entire dialogue for that scene is impossible. Yes, you can skip page by page, but if you have 10 pages to skip, it becomes annoying. And I also think that it will be good to skip the message when you die and the curtains fall. The graphics are good, and the soundtrack is just glorious! Great level designs, power-ups, and chaotic combat make this game super fun, with full controller support and Steam Cloud. The game is only available in English at this stage. Positives: ~~~~~~~ + Great Graphics + 23 colourful and well-designed levels + Super soundtrack + Funny and clever story + Great power-up; some are hilarious + Achievements Negatives: ~~~~~~~~ - No trading cards as yet - The screen movement might affect some players - Need to be able to skip dialogue quicker Oh, what a night, when a drunken knight needs to get back to his bride! Check it out. It’s fun and clever! 7/10 Key provided by the developer/publisher for review purposes. Any opinions expressed are entirely my own! A humorous platformer with simple gameplay that effectively utilizes several stereotypes and jokes. Stay away if you can’t handle a camel tow and some nasty bugs. Guide a drunk English knight on a quest to make it back home in time for his own wedding after a stag party gone wild in Egypt. Tagging along is a foul-mouthed Scottish owl who you "rescued" from a pyramid. Unfortunately, your heroic deed also allowed an old curse to be broken, raising an army of skeletons. It's unfortunate that there aren't any voices since that would be pure hilarity. Characters speak like stereotypes and act like them. It moves from sophisticated "taketh" to pirate talk, and each style has its own font. If you are easily offended by vulgar language, you probably won’t enjoy the game. Expect to see plenty of explicit content, like drawings of lewd objects on pyramids and sexual actions involving animals. The crowd cheers, gasps, and applauds whenever something happens as the game is performed in front of them like a play. The entire screen is trying to draw the player in with shaky movements and double vision to represent the drunkenness of the knight, which I found distracting. If you play for longer lengths of time, it can be too much. Not everybody will enjoy the gameplay. You advance linearly, killing enemies (or pet animals) to obtain their liver. The alcohol in the knight's bloodstream is killing his own livers, so he must constantly replace them before they completely fail. It also serves as health, although that's never a problem since you can pet animals to get all the liver you need. The other bar is drunkenness that is filled up by collecting 11 different types of glasses. Once you have gathered ten shots of a specific color, you activate a temporary special ability. You're never powerless in a boss encounter or on stages that call for a specific skill because shots respawn after a while. Each sort of drink is accompanied by a stereotype and appropriate music. For instance, bourbon makes you ride a bull, whereas tequila gives you a sombrero. The combat is chaotic and simple. You kill enemies by attacking with a sword and kicking. Despite a brief period of invincibility that prevents you from attacking enemies twice in a row, button mashing is the best strategy. With a shield that can stop anything, including bosses, everything becomes simpler. The comic book bubbles that say "In yer face" are a lovely addition as well. The last power is peeing. This is only used to push boxes or levers that are out of reach. Despite being somewhat underutilized due to the lack of puzzles in the stages, this is nonetheless a classic of this type of humor. A few nasty bugs put a black mark on the experience. Drunk state is no excuse when you can't hit flying enemies or when you get hit for no reason at all. The worst are situations when you get caught in a damage loop and can't do anything. All you can do is watch your health go down. The stage edges are another death trap; go too far and your health will drop to zero. However, the game won't restart on its own so you have to go to menu and select the stage again. Checkpoints aren't automatic; you need to kick the bucket to save. Miss it and you'll have to repeat entire stages or sections when you die. There's also one broken stage where you start at the final checkpoint.
I was nicely surprised by this game's creativity, cleverness, and presentation - there's a lot of stuff here that would be reined in by a more corporate developer, to the detriment of the game. But I like the chances this dev took (as apparently only indie game devs are able to these days.) It's a sidescroller that doesn't feel like the same-old, and the charm of the game is undeniable. Graphics are good and stylized, I haven't stumbled into any bugs yet, the audio is especially top-notch (I want to ask the dev if they recorded the audio inside an actual theatre/auditorium, as it's very effective.) In terms of difficulty, take what I say here with a grain of salt - I find the game hard at times (I'm a turn-based gamer mostly, that's where the grain of salt comes in. I'm not that good at action-y games). In short - indie games in general need our support, and this one certainly deserves it.
Weird, extremely drunk in all aspects (the text is fully uncensored and goes pretty far) but also very fun. Then it is also a bit clumsy and slow at time, so would benefit from some tuning. The music is really well suited to the action, the special effects are super fun, the sound effect mostly fitting. It reminds me of the Mighty Poo level in a famous game, which is great (and probably the only one). We need more games like that :)
