It's an alright game. I understand translation takes a lot of time and effort, but there are so many mistakes with spelling or pronouns or accidentally mashing words together that it sometimes makes it really difficult to follow conversations. The animations are cute, and the 'live stream' style is fun. The characters are interesting and it does take some time and practice to get all the endings. It's a shame that only one character is available upon purchase, it would have been nice for at least two at base game. Curious when/if the DLC will ever come out. Over all not bad for a $12 price, not amazing, but not terrible. 5/10 rating for me.
I love this game, but I wish I could improve the game interface.
On Air Island : Survival Chat is a narrative-focused survival drama that frames its entire experience around the unsettling idea of entertainment shaped by audience influence. Developed and published by Storytaco, it presents itself as a hybrid between a visual novel and a simulated live broadcast, where the player does not directly control events in a traditional sense, but instead participates as a viewer whose decisions subtly—or sometimes dramatically—alter the course of the story. This perspective is what gives the game its distinct identity, turning passive observation into something far more involved. The premise centers on a group of contestants stranded on an isolated island as part of a televised survival program. At first, the setup feels familiar, leaning into the tropes of competitive reality shows, where participants must cooperate, compete, and endure harsh conditions. However, as the narrative unfolds, the tone gradually darkens. The situation becomes more dangerous, secrets begin to surface, and the sense that something is fundamentally wrong with the show grows stronger. This shift from structured competition to unpredictable survival is handled effectively, creating a steady buildup of tension that keeps the story engaging. What makes the experience stand out is the way it incorporates player interaction into this narrative framework. Rather than guiding a single character directly, you influence events through choices that resemble audience participation—selecting options, offering support, and shaping outcomes from a distance. This creates an unusual dynamic where you are both detached and implicated, watching events unfold while also bearing responsibility for them. The system is simple in execution, but conceptually strong, as it reinforces the game’s underlying theme about the role of spectators in shaping entertainment and, by extension, the lives of those involved. The gameplay itself remains rooted in visual novel conventions, with a strong emphasis on dialogue and decision-making. Choices branch the story into multiple paths, leading to different outcomes depending on how you interact with the characters and situations. While the mechanics are not complex, the narrative gives these decisions weight, particularly when they affect the survival or fate of specific characters. The game encourages replayability by offering alternative routes and endings, though the core structure remains consistent enough that repeated playthroughs may feel familiar. Character writing plays a significant role in maintaining engagement. Each contestant is given a distinct personality, and their interactions evolve as the situation on the island becomes more unstable. Relationships shift, alliances form and break, and individual motivations become clearer over time. While not every character receives equal depth, the overall cast provides enough variety to keep the narrative dynamic. The strength of these interactions is what carries much of the experience, especially during slower segments where the focus is on dialogue rather than action. Visually, the game adopts a stylized, character-centric presentation that emphasizes portraits and expressive artwork. The island setting serves as a backdrop rather than a fully realized environment, which keeps the focus on the characters and their interactions. This approach works well within the visual novel format, though it limits the sense of immersion in the broader world. The audio design is subtle, with background music that supports the shifting tone without drawing attention away from the narrative. One of the more notable aspects of the game is its tonal range. It moves between suspense, drama, and occasional moments of dark humor, creating an experience that rarely feels static. This variety helps maintain interest, though the transitions can sometimes feel abrupt. Still, the unpredictability contributes to the overall atmosphere, reinforcing the idea that the situation is constantly evolving and rarely under control. The game’s main limitation lies in its mechanical simplicity. While the audience interaction concept is intriguing, it does not develop significantly over time, and the gameplay remains largely unchanged from beginning to end. The reliance on dialogue-heavy progression can also affect pacing, particularly in sections where exposition slows the narrative. For players seeking deeper systems or more active gameplay, this may feel limiting. Despite these shortcomings, On Air Island : Survival Chat succeeds in delivering a distinctive narrative experience that stands out within its genre. Its strength lies in how it frames player involvement, turning the act of making choices into a reflection of participation in a larger, morally ambiguous system. It may not fully realize all of its ideas, but it offers enough originality and tension to leave a lasting impression. In the end, it is best approached as a story-driven experience with experimental elements rather than a mechanically complex game. For players who enjoy branching narratives, character-focused storytelling, and a darker thematic edge, it provides a compelling and thought-provoking journey, even if its gameplay remains relatively simple. Rating: 6/10
Still waiting on the dlc for all the rest of the characters, I'll buy it whenever it eventually comes out.
