Crossroad Mysteries: The Broken Deal is a hidden object game that has some good things going for it, but suffers from frustrating difficulty settings that hold it back. This is one situation in which no achievements was a godsend. I don't think I could've managed a no-hint/nightmare difficulty playthrough without tearing my hair out. First, for the good. The artwork is gorgeous and encapsulates all that I love of "beauty in decay." I do so enjoy exploring deserted and crumbling structures. However, in order to appreciate its full beauty you need to play in windowed mode, as the original screen resolution is clearly lower than the 1920×1200 standard. This has the unfortunate side effect of making some of the items difficult to see, but 75% of the reason I play these games is for the artwork, so I had to do what I had to do to fully enjoy it. Atmosphere and music is also good with ambient themes and interesting sound effects that amplify the ominous surroundings. The voice acting was decent too, definitely better than a lot of other HOGs I've played. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1135601869 As for the story, it's campy and overly dramatic, and feels like they tried hard to be dark and gritty, but maybe a little too hard. There are a lot of religious references that may be a turn off for some people, so if you find churches and demons to be off-putting you may want to pass on this one. At least the written text is fluent, as a lot of HOGs coming to Steam these days tend to have some questionable translations. Unfortunately, the difficulty is where things really stumbled for me. The way each is set up I felt like none were geared for how I play. Hard or Nightmare is what I'd normally run since there's usually no highlighting of active areas, but the tooltips are completely disabled on both of these difficulties leaving the rate at which hints/skips renew as the only difference between the two. And let me tell you, no tooltips in a HOG is the most frustrating experience ever. You're just clicking around on random things, and when a window does pop open there's no decription of what that thing is or any other clue to steer you in the right direction. It's just jostle it around a bit, then go back to fumbling in the dark again. So it was back to Easy/Normal for me, which both highlight active areas even though Normal isn't supposed to. I either played on super hard or super easy, and I was not at all happy with either option. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1149807789 The hidden object scenes on all difficulties were frustrating too. As is standard in most HOGs, there are several items that need to be assembled and/or activated in some way before you can clear them, but the items you need to pick up and use on another do not highlight when you mouse over them, so you have to randomly click on everything to find the one thing you can actually use. Yeah, not a fan of that setup at all. Hints are also limited and are sprinkled around the areas as hidden items, but I've seen this done in other HOGs and actually like how it forces you to manage your hint usage instead of spamming it every time the button lights up. Most of the puzzles were pretty unique, the difficulty of which is rather steep too. Had I not already been frustrated with the game, I'd probably have tried harder at them rather than skipping every other. I really wanted to give this game a recommendation because I feel it had potential, but I simply cannot encourage others to play it when my experience was so miserable. Perhaps if you're one for super hard or super easy HOGs you might find some enjoyment in it, but for the price I can't say it's worth it. If you ravenously consume HOGs and are intent on grabbing it, though, wait for a sale or bundle. On a final note...Arial typeset is the most generically low quality font you can use in a game, period. Not only does it look positively garish against the intricately painted backgrounds and UI, but makes the game look cheaply made. Please, for the love of all that's holy, do not use Arial in your games. Thank you. Good day. First of all, I've received this key from a friend who the developers were kind enough to give her an extra key. A new adventure and hidden objects game with an amazing art, story and characters design. The protagonist Anna been suffering from a stigma in her hands ever since she was a child. Searching for the reasons and in need of answers, she decided to take a trip to her childhood hometown, Blackburn. Her adventure was the most mysterious and very exciting as she finds fragments of her past scatters around the areas. The inn, hospital, lighthouse and the church. The graphics of each area looks really amazing, I couldn't get enough of this game's art style. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1128232836 Another point I'm giving the game is how they are giving us the chance to choose between two actions and each has its consequences, for example, you can die. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1126827360 I also loved the journal style which keeps track of the adventure and Anna thoughts about the things she encounters. Very useful and beautiful to look at. The hidden objects scenes although they are few but very well made and I didn't encounter any glitch or any issues with clicking on the objects needed. Those scenes art are really high in quality and clearly painted from the scratch, not from an image stock. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1128233353 The fast-traveling map was really helpful and a good addition to this game which has many places to visit. The mini games ranged between a very easy to extremely hard ones (in my case the last mini-game was hard) Pros: +Interesting story. +Good voice overs. +Beautiful graphics. +Fast travel map. +Variation of minigames. +Good atmospheric music. +Good journal. +Steam achievements Cons: -There are few hidden objects scenes. The game length was average, around 5 hours and it technically has two endings. I encourage you to read everything because it is really important.
Crossroad Mysteries: The Broken Deal
Hidden object game of 2017. Desperate to find a cure for her horrific wounds and nightmares, Anna begins to search for the source of her childhood ailments, about which she has no idea. Her path leads her to a small town, from where she entered the institution. All her memories up to this moment seem to be wrapped in a kind of white shroud. What happened to Anna in her early childhood? How will she cope with what lies hidden in the secret chambers of her past? (Developer) So much for the content of the adventure. Doesn't sound that exciting at first, nor is it, but technically quite well made. A rather average game relatively difficult. It often swarms here. Very well done, rather difficult. There is a help function. There are also some mini-games, which are rather moderate in terms of difficulty. Finding clues is rather easy. Technically well implemented and error-free. The focus of this game is on the playable images shown, which are consistent with the story, which is better than expected. This turns a rather average game into a really good game. It is sure to please fans of dark tales. I can also recommend it for beginners. This is the first HOG I have played where I came to a "game over" screen! Even on an easier setting, this is a more difficult HOG than average, unless you plan to skip the puzzles. Some puzzle can be really annoying, especially if your color identification is not great. There are some interesting tweaks to the standard HOG formula, but all the usual tropes are still there. A short dark HO with a bunch of mini games to flesh out the time. I played on normal setting and it took me under 5 hours....and I'm certainly not a speedster! You have marks on your hands which cannot be explained medically, so you decided to go back to your childhood town to discover what happened in the past. Your memory is murky and you wondered how you ended up in an asylum. The graphics are suitably spooky and menacing with complimentary music. You have to make a few choices along the way and I did die a few times.....which is unusual in a HOG. The mini games were challenging, but game play was pretty linear with multiple hints to aid you. I loved the fact that you find a block of chocolate, eat it and it gives you more hints!! There is an excellent journal and a fast travel map to show what areas have something to do. A little bit of pixel hunting for some objects, but on the whole fairly easy for an experienced HO player like me. No collectables and very easy to get all achievements if you solve all the mini games. There were a few religious overtones to the game, but quite lightly done....and mainly towards the end. I've played much heavier biblical themed games. Just scrapes through as a recommendation. 6/10.
SERIOUS, MOODY & MYSTERIOUS- A thoroughly enjoyable HOPA. It hits all the right notes with me. The graphics are clear, with neutral colors, and have an almost painting like quality. I love these kinds of graphics. The story is serious and not childish, infact there's nothing for children here. You collect hints along the way, and I did need to use them a few times. I loved the way 'dilapidated' is done, and there was no lag in the story. 12 or so HOPS to play, of wordlists, with some items requiring a further step. The game is chaptered into sections -you can't roam freely. You can change difficulty levels during the game. I really liked a particular feature of this game (which I don't come across in most HOPA games), which was that the chapters are saved automatically! Maybe that's a feature of 'Steam' ? Anyway, it's a great, and features under the Menu option as 'Load.' I experienced a glitch of an item not going into the inventory, and I was able to instantly pick up the game again, by choosing the most recent save option.
Short version: 60%
There are some okay puzzles and a decent supernatural hidden object game here somewhere, buried under a snail-paced plot and the clunky controls.
Long version:
I love the premise of Crossroad mysteries: an amnesiac woman arrives at an eerie town in search of her past, but what she finds chills her bones. As it turns out, her mother had to commit some dreadful crimes to save her from a childhood illness. On top of that, the eerie atmosphere helps a lot to immerse ourselves in the plot. There is only one issue with it: the pacing feels terrible. It is as if the game lacked a director to keep it in check. This unnerving feeling accompanies the gameplay as well. The hidden object scenes are okay—as few as there are—and even the puzzles have some refreshing ideas, despite the last one taking forever and a half. There is something off though… as if the controls were not responsive sometimes. That can pose issues, especially in the point and click adventure segments. Therefore, here we are. A game with decent ideas at the core, but failing to package them appropriately. Still, HOG lovers should be okay with it.
This game was pretty mid-ground for me in terms of my thoughts on it. I enjoyed the graphics since I like anything remotely spooky or derelict but the font choice kind of broke the immersion from that. I'm assuming the original font was for another language, but a bit of font change could do wonders for this game. I really enjoyed some of the puzzles. UNFORTUNATELY, I think a lot of people can agree that the instructions were way too vague for anyone's liking. I've checked some LPs and a lot of them skipped minigames since they couldn't understand what was happening either. I can see how frustrating some of the puzzles could be. Especially the blackjack bit, it took a moment to understand it from someone who doesn't play card games. Luckily, I've managed to pass through those games without skipping although it did take a hefty chunk of my gameplay time. This game is about the normal length of 3-4 hours a HOG usually contains (I left it running while doing other things so don't judge my time for it.) The story though did have some interesting moments, I wish the sheriff had more presence since he doesn't even get to the end. It got a bit "edgy" there with the biblical aspect but if you're into that, you'll have a thrill. Overall, okay. HO scenes were pretty entertaining and they weren't godawful messy.
